To refresh bespoke furniture quickly with Dulux Duramax, match the can to the substrate and the look you want, prepare the piece thoroughly, then build the colour with several thin, overlapping passes. The paint may become touch dry within minutes, but that is not the same as being cured for heavy use: follow the exact can’s recoat and ready-to-use instructions.

Dulux’s general spray-paint guide describes a typical project timeframe of one to two hours, including application, but that is a planning guide rather than a guarantee for every piece. Furniture size, surface condition, temperature, humidity and the selected finish all change the schedule.

Where spray paint can save time on a furniture refresh

Aerosol paint can reduce the setup associated with brushes and rollers and makes it easier to cover turned legs, narrow rails, carved details and other shapes without mixing a large batch of paint. The time advantage comes from the application method and the product’s short touch-dry or recoat intervals, not from skipping preparation.

There is no independent, quantified time-saving figure for Duramax on bespoke furniture. A heavily soiled, glossy or damaged piece can still require substantial cleaning, sanding, masking and repairs before spraying. Conversely, a sound piece with an accessible surface can move from preparation to colour coats in a single session.

Use Dulux’s general spray-paint guide as a workflow reference, then give priority to the instructions printed on your particular can.

Choose the finish before you pick up the can

Start with the furniture’s material and the appearance you want. Dulux describes its Chalky Finish as “Perfect for transforming interior furniture and décor,” while its Duramax colour sprays provide broader colour and sheen choices. The figures below belong to the named Dulux Australia product pages accessed in 2026; they do not represent every can in the range.

Product example Best fit and appearance Surfaces named by Dulux Stated coverage Stated drying or use timing
Dulux Spray Effects Chalky Surf Green Interior furniture and décor; ultra-matt, velvety chalk effect that can be sanded for a distressed look Furniture and décor applications described on the product page Up to 2 m² Touch dry in 10 minutes
Dulux Spray Satin Endless Dusk Satin colour finish for a broader, smoother colour treatment Wood, most non-ferrous metals, porous and previously painted surfaces, and most plastics including uPVC and ABS Up to 4.5 m² Touch dry in less than 10 minutes; ready to use in one hour; recoat any time after 10 minutes
Dulux Spray Effects Metallic Silver Metallic accent for furniture and décor Wood, metal and most plastics Up to 1 m² Touch dry in 30 minutes

Coverage is an estimate for the product and conditions shown by Dulux. Open grain, texture, porous edges, colour changes and overspray can reduce the area covered. Do not convert a can’s square-metre figure directly into a guaranteed number of cabinets, chairs or shelves.

Choose chalky ultra-matt for a furniture-led look

Chalky Finish is the most specifically furniture-oriented option in the cited material. Its ultra-matt, velvety appearance suits a deliberately soft, aged or contemporary chalk look. Once the finish is properly dry, selective sanding can expose highlights and create a distressed effect; sand gently and test your technique on a hidden area first.

Choose satin when you want colour with a subtle sheen

The Endless Dusk Satin example illustrates the broader Duramax colour-spray category. Its product page lists wood, most non-ferrous metals, porous and previously painted surfaces, and most plastics including uPVC and ABS. Those substrate claims apply to that named product page, so check the label when choosing another colour or finish.

Use metallic only where the reflective effect belongs

Metallic Silver is described for furniture and décor on wood, metal and most plastics. Its stated coverage is only up to 1 m² and its touch-dry time is 30 minutes, so plan for more material and a longer wait than the satin example when covering a large piece.

Consider a clear satin top coat carefully

Dulux Spray Clear Satin is described as a protective clear coat over Dulux Spray colours, with interior and exterior durability plus scratch- and impact-resistance claims. Dulux instructs users to apply several light coats. The surfaced product information contains inconsistent coverage and touch-dry figures, so check the current can and product page rather than planning from a single quoted number.

Confirm the substrate and existing coating

Identify what the furniture is made from and what is already on it before buying paint. Wood, most non-ferrous metals, porous surfaces, previously painted surfaces and many plastics are listed for the cited Endless Dusk Satin product. The same page warns that not every plastic behaves alike: polyethylene, for example, may not accept paint even with primer.

For an unfamiliar plastic, inspect the recycling mark or manufacturer information if available, then spray a small, inconspicuous test patch. Let it dry and check adhesion, colour, sheen and whether the surface remains soft or wrinkled before committing to the visible areas. A test patch is also worthwhile when an old coating is unknown, contaminated or unusually glossy.

Prepare the furniture so the faster method actually works

  1. Remove hardware and loose parts. Take off handles, hinges and shelves where practical. Label screws and keep hardware away from the spray area so you do not coat moving or mating surfaces accidentally.
  2. Clean completely. Dulux’s spray instructions call for a clean, dry surface free from grease, rust and dirt. Degrease kitchen residue, hand oils and polish; rinse or wipe away cleaner residue and allow the piece to dry fully.
  3. Repair and de-gloss. Fill chips or dents with a suitable repair material, allow repairs to dry, and lightly sand where Dulux recommends it for the supported material. Sanding gives the coating a more consistent key and reduces the chance that a glossy old film will reject the spray. Remove all sanding dust before painting.
  4. Protect everything around the work. Use a drop cloth, masking tape and an overspray barrier around walls, floors, nearby furniture and hardware. Position the piece so you can keep the can moving without spraying toward an unprotected area.
  5. Check the conditions. For the cited colour-spray instructions, Dulux says not to spray below 10°C or above 30°C. Cold temperatures and high humidity can slow drying. Work in a well-ventilated area and follow the current can and safety data sheet for protective equipment, ventilation and other precautions.
  6. Test the complete system. Spray an inconspicuous area, including any primer or old coating that will remain. A successful test should dry evenly, adhere when lightly rubbed and show the appearance you expect.

Apply Duramax in controlled, light passes

  1. Shake thoroughly. Dulux’s colour-spray instructions say to shake for at least two minutes after the first rattle, and regularly during use. Inadequate mixing can produce uneven colour or sheen.
  2. Set the distance. Hold the can upright. The general Dulux guide gives a 10–25 cm spray distance; the cited colour-spray instructions use roughly 20–25 cm. Start within the range printed on your can and adjust only enough to keep the fan even.
  3. Start moving before pressing the nozzle. Begin the stroke just off the edge, press the nozzle while the hand is already moving, and release it just after the stroke ends. This prevents a wet blob at the beginning or end of a pass.
  4. Overlap each stroke. Keep the can parallel to the surface and use smooth, even passes. Overlap the previous pass consistently so stripes and thin gaps do not appear.
  5. Build several light coats. Dulux recommends multiple light coats instead of one heavy coat. A thin coat dries more predictably and is less likely to sag, run, wrinkle or trap solvent. Rotate the piece between coats only when it can be handled without marking the finish.
  6. Respect the recoat interval. The Endless Dusk Satin page permits recoating any time after 10 minutes, but another finish may require a different interval. Metallic Silver’s page lists a 30-minute touch-dry time, and touch dry is not automatically the recoat instruction. Use the can’s current label for that product.
  7. Inspect under consistent light. Before the final coat, look along edges, inside corners and underneath overhangs. Correct thin spots with another light pass rather than flooding the area.

Plan drying, recoating and real use separately

“Touch dry” means the surface no longer feels wet when lightly touched under the manufacturer’s stated conditions. It does not mean the coating has reached its final hardness or can withstand abrasion, stacked parts, moisture or repeated handling.

For the named Endless Dusk Satin example, Dulux lists touch dry in less than 10 minutes, ready to use in one hour and recoating any time after 10 minutes. For the named Chalky Finish example, Dulux lists touch dry in 10 minutes but does not provide the same one-hour ready-to-use statement on the cited page. Metallic Silver is listed as touch dry in 30 minutes. Lower temperatures and high humidity can extend these times.

Keep doors, drawers, shelves and load-bearing joints open or unloaded until the selected product’s label says they are ready. If the furniture will carry weight, receive frequent handling or be exposed to cleaning, use the longer curing guidance on the current label rather than relying on the first touch-dry milestone.

Make bespoke effects without adding unnecessary coats

Two-tone panels and masked details

Let the first colour dry according to its label, then mask crisp boundaries with tape and an overspray barrier before applying the second colour. Press tape edges down firmly, spray light passes away from the tape edge, and remove the tape as directed by the product instructions so you do not lift a soft film.

Distressed chalk finish

With Chalky Finish, use fine abrasive paper on selected corners, raised mouldings and handle areas after the coating is properly dry. Work gradually: the goal is controlled variation, not exposing large raw sections. Stop and reassess in normal room light before distressing another area.

Metallic accents

Use Metallic Silver on a frame, trim, drawer fronts or selected hardware rather than automatically covering an entire piece. The product page’s up-to-1-m² coverage makes a measured accent easier to plan than a full large cabinet. Mask adjacent areas and keep passes light so the reflective surface remains even.

Protective clear finish

If you add Dulux Spray Clear Satin over a Dulux Spray colour, apply several light coats as directed. Confirm compatibility, recoat timing and final sheen on a test area first, because the surfaced clear-coat specifications do not provide one consistent coverage or touch-dry figure.

Troubleshoot common spray-paint failures

  • Runs or curtains: The coat was too heavy, the can was too close or the hand paused. Stop adding paint, allow the film to dry, smooth the defect as appropriate, and return to lighter moving passes.
  • Rough, dry spray: The can may be too far away, the pass too slow for the distance, or the surface may be dusty. Check the nozzle, return to the label’s distance and overlap, and remove dust between coats.
  • Patchy colour or sheen: Insufficient shaking, inconsistent overlap, porous areas or different old coatings can cause variation. Shake again, keep the can upright, and even out the piece with additional light coats after the correct interval.
  • Wrinkling or lifting: The underlying coating may be incompatible, contaminated or not fully dry, or the new coat may be too wet. Stop, let the area dry, test adhesion elsewhere and follow the selected product’s preparation guidance.
  • Paint will not adhere to plastic: Some plastics, including polyethylene, may not accept paint even with primer. Do not proceed on the visible face until a dried test patch proves adhesion.
  • Drying is taking too long: Cold conditions, high humidity, heavy coats and poor ventilation can all delay drying. Move the project only if the label allows it, improve the environment safely and extend the waiting time.

Clear the nozzle and deal with overspray

When you finish spraying, Dulux instructs users to turn the can upside down and spray until clear gas emerges. Wipe the front of the nozzle, then store the can as directed on its label. Wet overspray can be cleaned with mineral turpentine according to the cited instructions; test the cleaner on the affected surface first because it can damage existing finishes.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not pour leftover paint into drains. Follow local rules for disposal of unused aerosol contents and empty or partially full containers, and keep cans away from heat and ignition sources as required by the label and safety data sheet.

Use this decision sequence for a faster, cleaner project

  1. Define the look: choose chalky ultra-matt, satin colour or metallic before preparing the furniture.
  2. Verify compatibility: confirm the material on the exact product page and perform a hidden test patch, especially on plastic or an unknown old coating.
  3. Prepare once, thoroughly: clean, dry, lightly sand where appropriate, repair defects and mask the entire overspray zone before opening the can.
  4. Set a realistic schedule: use the named product’s coverage, touch-dry, recoat and ready-to-use figures, while allowing extra time for texture, humidity and additional coats.
  5. Spray in thin layers: shake for the specified time, hold the can upright at the label’s distance, overlap passes and release the nozzle at the end of each stroke.
  6. Protect the finished piece: keep it unloaded and lightly handled until the product’s stated use or cure guidance permits normal service.

Dulux’s Spray Paint range page and Spray range page provide current colour information and a stockist path. Product availability, labels and specifications can change, so use the can in hand as the final authority.
