You can update dated rattan chairs without repainting the frames: remove the upholstered seats, clean the weave and joints, and staple fresh upholstery fabric over the existing seat and padding when both are still sound. The key is to confirm how each seat is attached before you pull anything apart. In the documented example, the round seats unscrew from below, so each one can be recovered on a work surface and then returned to its original frame.
This is a practical upholstery refresh, not a universal reupholstery specification. Seat fasteners, padding condition, fabric allowance and underside folds vary by chair. Use the sequence below as a safe framework, then follow the care labels and construction of your own furniture.

Decide whether a fabric refresh is enough
Start by looking at the whole chair rather than choosing fabric first. A new cover works best when the frame is stable, the seat can be removed without damage, and the existing cushion still has useful shape.
Check the seat attachment
Turn the chair over and inspect the underside of the seat. Look for screws, bolts, clips or other fasteners. The example project used upholstered round seats that unscrewed from below. That made it possible to separate the seats from the rattan frames and work on them individually. Do not assume every rattan chair uses the same system; photograph the underside and keep fasteners grouped by chair as you remove them.

Inspect the seat board and padding
Once a seat is loose, check the board, foam or other padding, and the old covering. The example retained both the seat and padding because they were in good condition. That is a project-specific choice, not proof that old padding is suitable for every chair. Replace or repair components that are cracked, badly compressed, damp, contaminated or no longer hold their shape before fitting new fabric.
Assess the existing finish
Look for loose strands, damaged wrapped joints, instability or signs that the frame needs structural repair. If the rattan is sound and you like its aged variation, cleaning and new fabric may be all the change it needs. The project author deliberately kept the original finish because the natural-looking differences were part of the furniture’s character.

Gather the tools and materials
The project uses ordinary upholstery and cleaning supplies. A screwdriver is needed for the removable seats; the other items support fabric removal, cutting, fastening and frame cleaning.
| Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Staple remover | Lift the old covering without relying on a knife or screwdriver at every staple. |
| Scissors | Cut the new fabric and trim excess from the underside after fastening. |
| Upholstery fabric | Provide the new seat covering; choose a fabric whose care instructions suit the chair’s location. |
| Staple gun and upholstery staples | Secure the fabric to the underside of the seat. |
| Screwdriver | Detach and reattach seats that are screwed to the frame. |
| Cleaning spray and rags | Remove dirt from the rattan weave, crevices and wrapped joints using a product appropriate for the finish. |
Search terms such as “upholstery fabric for chair seats,” “upholstery staple gun and staples,” and “upholstery staple remover” describe the categories used in the project. No particular brand or model is required by the method.

Prepare the chairs before upholstery work
- Photograph each chair. Take pictures of the seat orientation, screw locations and any washers or brackets. This gives you a reference when you reassemble the furniture.
- Label parts if the chairs differ. Mark the underside of a seat discreetly so a shaped or slightly uneven seat returns to its original frame.
- Protect the work surface. Old staples and dirt will come off during the job. A clear, stable surface also lets you keep the fabric pattern aligned while you staple.
- Test the cleaning approach. Read the furniture and fabric care instructions first. Try any cleaner on an inconspicuous area before treating the visible weave or finish.
Clean the rattan without erasing its character
Rattan is not a single finish or construction. Fritz Hansen describes wicker or rattan as a natural material made from inner stem fibres of the tropical palm Calamus rotang, but chairs sold as rattan can differ in weave, coating, age and use. Treat the care label for your own piece as the controlling instruction.
In the documented refresh, cleaning spray and rags were worked into the crevices around the woven sections and the wrapped joints, where dust collects. Work methodically rather than flooding the frame. A garden-furniture care guide from Harbour Lifestyle advises wiping exposed frame sections with a damp cloth and mild soap. For its polyester cushions, it specifies the maker’s fabric cleaner and a microfiber cloth, followed by thorough drying before use or storage. Those directions apply to that retailer’s furniture; they are not a universal formula for every rattan finish or cushion.

Remove the seats before cleaning if doing so gives you better access, and let every cleaned area dry fully. If you use a cover outdoors, choose a breathable one: the same care guide warns that non-breathable covers can trap moisture. Never assume a cleaner that is safe for a cushion is safe for a coated rattan frame.
Remove the old seat covering
- Detach the seat. Remove the screws or other fasteners identified during inspection and lift the seat from the frame. Put the hardware in a labeled container.
- Expose the underside. Place the seat upside down on the work surface. Keep the top protected from grit while you work.
- Lift staples gradually. Use the staple remover to raise the old staples, then pull them free. Work around the perimeter until the fabric releases.
- Inspect what remains. Check that the seat board and padding are still in the condition you observed earlier. If either has deteriorated, stop and address it before cutting new fabric.
Save a small piece of the old fabric if you need to remember the original orientation or approximate coverage. It is a reference, not a reliable yardage pattern for every chair.

Plan the pattern and cut the new fabric
Place the new fabric with its wrong side facing up. Set the seat on top and leave several inches of extra fabric beyond every edge. That excess must wrap around the underside far enough for secure staples; the exact amount depends on the seat’s thickness and underside construction, so the example does not establish a universal measurement.
Center a large print before cutting
If the fabric has a large floral or other directional design, decide which portion should appear on each seat before you make the first cut. Centering the design now is much easier than trying to correct it after staples have been driven. Align the seat to the fabric grain or motif, check the view from the top, and then cut around the seat with the planned allowance.

Keep seats consistent
For a set of chairs, lay the cut pieces together and compare their pattern direction. A repeated motif may require rotating one piece or choosing a different section of the roll. Do not cut all pieces automatically from the same orientation if the pattern would appear tilted or off-center when the chairs are placed side by side.
Staple the fabric so the top stays smooth
- Center the seat. Put the seat on the wrong side of the fabric, confirm the pattern position from the top, and keep the excess evenly distributed.
- Set the first opposing staples. Pull the fabric snug, not aggressively tight, and place a few staples at the center of one side. Move to the opposite side, smooth the fabric, and add matching staples there.
- Alternate around the perimeter. Continue from side to side instead of completing one edge in a single run. This distributes tension and helps prevent the top from drifting.
- Work toward the corners or curves. Keep checking the top surface as you advance. On a round seat, the fabric will form folds as it turns around the edge.
- Control the folds underneath. Arrange the folds neatly on the underside, where they will not show from a seated position. Keep the visible top smooth and avoid bunching beneath a fastening point.
- Finish and trim. Once the fabric is secure all the way around, trim the excess on the underside without cutting into the staple line or leaving loose tails that could catch on the frame.
Alternating opposite sides is more reliable than pulling one section tight and hoping the tension reaches the rest of the seat. If a wrinkle appears, remove only the nearby staples, smooth the fabric, and refasten that area before continuing.

Reattach the recovered seats
Place each finished seat back on its labeled frame and align the original holes or brackets. Start the screws by hand so the threads seat correctly, then tighten them evenly. The seat should sit flush without rocking, and no staple or fabric edge should interfere with the frame. Test the chair gently before normal use and recheck the fasteners if anything shifts.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Should you paint the rattan frame?
Painting is optional, not a required part of this refresh. The documented project preserved the existing finish because its aged variations looked natural and the author preferred that character. The broader lesson is that changing the dated element—the seat fabric—can be enough when the frame is sound.

Identify the frame material and existing coating before applying a product. Do not paint over dirt, dampness or loose fibres, and do not let a new seat cover hide structural problems that should be repaired first.
Choose fabric by use, care and visual scale
The most direct product category is upholstery fabric intended for chair seats. Select it according to the chair’s setting and the care instructions supplied with the fabric. Indoor and outdoor use can impose different cleaning and moisture requirements, but the available project information does not establish a particular composition, abrasion rating or outdoor-performance measurement.

- Location: Decide whether the chair stays indoors, on a covered porch or fully outdoors, then verify that the fabric’s care directions match that environment.
- Pattern scale: Large motifs need planning so a pleasing section lands in the center of each seat. Small or non-directional patterns are more forgiving when cutting multiple pieces.
- Seat shape: Round seats require folds underneath; thicker or more sculpted seats may need more fabric to wrap the underside.
- Maintenance: Keep the fabric’s cleaning instructions with the chair’s other care information. A frame cleaner and a cushion cleaner are not automatically interchangeable.
- Quantity: Measure every seat and include the extra fabric needed to wrap and staple underneath. Because the example provides no universal yardage formula, buy according to your actual seat dimensions and layout.
Troubleshoot common problems
The seat will not come off
Stop forcing it. Look for concealed screws, brackets or fasteners from a different direction, and consult the chair’s instructions if available. If the seat is permanently fixed, the removable-seat method does not apply; recovering it in place requires a different approach and greater protection for the frame.
The pattern is off-center
Pattern placement must be solved before cutting and stapling. If the fabric is only loosely attached, remove the first staples, recenter the seat on the wrong side, and begin again with opposing staples. Once the perimeter is fully fastened, correction usually means removing much more fabric.
The top has wrinkles
Check whether tension was applied evenly. Release the staples nearest the wrinkle, smooth toward the opposite side, and alternate your next staples rather than tightening one edge completely. Keep unavoidable round-seat folds on the underside.
Staples do not hold
Confirm that you are fastening into the seat’s solid underside rather than a thin edge, void or existing staple cluster. Remove protruding old staples and reposition the fabric so the gun can make firm contact. Use upholstery staples suited to the seat construction; the project does not specify a universal staple length.
The padding is too far gone
Do not cover collapsed, damp or damaged padding merely because the old fabric is off. Replace or repair the padding first, then recut the fabric allowance if the seat thickness changes.
The frame looks blotchy after cleaning
Stop using the product and let the area dry. Recheck the furniture’s care instructions and test any gentler method in a hidden spot. Different finishes react differently, and a cushion-cleaning product should not be assumed safe for woven rattan.
Maintain the refreshed chairs
Keep the weave and wrapped joints free of accumulated dirt with the lightest cleaning method approved for the frame. Follow the fabric label for spot cleaning, dry cushions completely before use or storage, and use breathable protection where covers are needed outdoors. Inspect the underside occasionally for loose staples and the seat fasteners for movement. Addressing a small problem early protects the new fabric and the rattan you chose to keep.
