To remaster an old song with AI, start with the best authorized copy of the recording, choose a mastering tool that matches your workflow, and compare its output with the original at matched playback volume. Treat mastering as a way to balance and finish the recording: the listed tools describe mastering, reference matching, or stem workflows, but none establishes dedicated repair for clicks, hiss, wow and flutter, or clipping. If those defects are the main problem, check the vendor’s site for suitable repair features before choosing a tool.
Prepare The Recording Before Mastering
- Find the highest-quality source you can use, such as a lossless file or a transfer made from the original medium. Keep an untouched copy so you can compare every master against it.
- Listen through the whole song and note what you want to preserve: for example, a close vocal, a soft ending, or the balance between voice and instruments. Also note audible defects. Mastering controls cannot be assumed to remove them.
- Choose a reference recording with a similar musical arrangement and recording character. For an old mono or narrow-sounding recording, a modern, very wide reference may steer the result away from the original character. Reference matching is available in Waves Online Mastering, Ozone, and BABA MASTER; check each vendor’s site for accepted reference formats and exact workflow details.
- If you have separate vocal, bass, drum, and instrument stems, keep them available. Ozone’s Stem EQ separately processes those elements; most of the other workflows described below focus on a stereo track.
Choose A Workflow That Fits Your Source

Remaster The Song And Compare Carefully
- Load the untouched source into your chosen tool. In a browser service, upload the stereo file; in a DAW, insert the mastering plugin on the stereo mix. Follow the vendor’s instructions for supported file types and project setup.
- Set a reference if the tool supports one. Choose a track for the balance and tonal character you want, not simply the loudest or newest recording. For an old song, listen for whether the reference makes the original feel unnaturally bright, bass-heavy, or wide.
- Make one small change at a time. In Waves Online Mastering, audition the selectable styles and use the Presence and Depth controls to explore tonal changes. In Mixea, compare its options and vary intensity or EQ. In Ozone, work in the DAW and use Stem EQ only when separate stems are available. These controls do not establish that a tool can remove source defects.
- For BABA MASTER, give a restrained direction such as: “Keep the vocal clear, preserve the original balance, and avoid making the top end harsher.” Treat that as a request to guide mastering changes, then review the result with the plugin’s controls and loudness monitoring.
- Compare each candidate with the untouched source at similar playback volume. Listen for changes to the vocal, bass, cymbals or other bright sounds, stereo image, and quiet passages. Reject a version if it makes a defect more distracting or changes the song’s character in a way you did not intend.
- Export the version you prefer using an output format offered by the tool. Keep the source and the chosen master as separate files, and check the exported file from beginning to end.
Check Rights And Tool Terms
Use recordings and reference tracks you have permission to upload and process. If the song includes a recognizable voice, a cover, or samples, check the relevant platform’s terms and make sure you have the needed consent and permissions for your intended use. Licensing and commercial-use terms are not established here, so check each vendor’s current terms before publishing or distributing a master.
