Yes, you can remove an image background in Canva without immediately paying for Pro—but Canva currently advertises its native Background Remover as a one-time free try, not an unlimited Canva Free feature. For regular use, Canva Pro is the simplest in-editor option. If your free try has been used, you can use a Canva Apps marketplace remover, remove the background in another service such as Adobe Express or PhotoRoom, or upload a transparent PNG that already exists.

What background removal actually does
Background removal isolates the main subject—such as a logo, product, person, signature, animal, or artwork—and turns the surrounding pixels transparent. The subject can then sit over any color, photograph, texture, or painted design without a rectangular background around it.

Canva distinguishes its transparent Background Remover from its Background Changer and Generator. Use Background Remover when you need a genuinely transparent file.
Is Canva Background Remover free?
Canva currently advertises one free use of its online Background Remover. After that, ongoing access to Canva’s native tool is generally promoted as a Canva Pro feature. Canva’s public pricing page lists background removal among Pro tools, so it would be inaccurate to describe Canva Free as offering unlimited native background removal.
There are three different meanings of free in this context:

- Free once through Canva: the public Background Remover pages currently advertise one free try and a PNG download. Not every account necessarily receives the same allowance; availability can depend on account, location, product surface, subscription history, or an experiment.
- Free through another tool: a Canva marketplace app or external remover may offer free credits or free low-resolution processing, but each provider sets its own limits, privacy terms, and output rules.
- Free Canva editing after removal: you can remove the background elsewhere, download a transparent PNG, and continue editing that file in Canva Free.
As checked on August 10, 2026, Canva’s public U.S. pricing page showed Canva Free at US$0 and Canva Pro at US$144 per year for one person. Prices vary by country, taxes, billing cycle, account, and purchase channel. Canva does not expose a stable monthly figure in the supplied pricing page, so check the current Canva pricing page or your own checkout flow rather than relying on an old monthly price quoted elsewhere.
Qualifying nonprofits may be eligible for premium Canva access for one team of up to 50 users, and qualifying K–12 users and institutions can check Canva Education. Eligibility is not automatic.
Method 1: Remove a background in Canva Pro on desktop
Canva’s desktop labels vary between the editor, the standalone tool, and interface rollouts. You may see Edit image, Edit photo, BG Remover, or Background Remover. They refer to the same general workflow.
- Open Canva and create a design, or open an existing design.
- Upload the source image through Uploads, or select an image already on the page.
- Click the image itself. If you select a group, frame, page, video, or other object, the remover may not appear.
- Click Edit image or Edit photo in the toolbar.
- Select BG Remover or Background Remover.
- Wait while Canva processes the image.
- Inspect the result against a contrasting color or image. A white Canva page can make an imperfect cutout look correct.
- If the controls are available, use Erase to remove leftover background fragments and Restore to paint back hair, fur, clothing, or other details that were accidentally removed. Some current Canva surfaces use Configure for refinement.
- Choose Apply or Done to keep the edit.
The expected result is a visible subject surrounded by transparent pixels. Inside Canva, transparency may be easiest to confirm by placing a dark shape, colored page background, or another photograph behind the cutout.
Download the cutout as a transparent PNG
- Click Share, then Download.
- Set the file type to PNG.
- Enable Transparent background when Canva displays that option.
- Download the file and test it by opening it in an editor or re-uploading it over a contrasting Canva background.
A transparent PNG is different from an image that merely appears background-free inside a design. JPG does not preserve transparent pixels.
Method 2: Remove a background in Canva on iPhone or Android
The mobile app does not expose one universal menu path across every version. Canva’s current instructions use both of these routes:
- Open the Canva mobile app and open a design or start a new one.
- Add the image, or tap an image already in the design to select it.
- Tap Edit image or Edit photo. On some app surfaces, tap Effects first.
- Tap BG Remover or Background Remover.
- Wait for processing, inspect the result, and apply it.
- Use Share → Download, choose PNG, and enable the transparent-background option if you need a standalone file.
If you cannot find the tool, select the image again and look under both Edit image and Effects. Canva’s Learn guide and its current logo-removal instructions use different mobile labels, so a missing exact phrase does not necessarily mean the feature is unavailable.

Method 3: Use Canva’s one-time free Background Remover
This is the first free method to try because it is Canva’s own current public offer.

- Upload your image. Canva’s public Background Remover page specifically lists JPG, PNG, HEIC, and HEIF formats.
- Choose BG Remover or Background Remover.
- Review the cutout against a contrasting background.
- Download the result as a PNG if the free-use allowance is offered.
- Upload that PNG to a Canva Free design for further editing.
Canva currently says the tool can work with people, animals, and objects, but do not assume every account has an unused free allowance. If Canva immediately shows a Pro lock, upgrade screen, or no free download, use one of the alternatives below instead of treating the public offer as a guarantee.
Method 4: Use a background-removal app from Canva’s marketplace
Canva’s Apps marketplace contains third-party apps that can add functions to a Canva design. Individual apps can change names, disappear, restrict credits, or introduce pricing, so search the marketplace rather than depending on one named app.
- Open a Canva design.
- Select Apps in the left sidebar on desktop, or open the app menu on mobile.
- Search for
background remover,background eraser, orremove background. - Open an available app and read its terms before uploading a sensitive image.
- Check whether it limits free credits, resolution, export, or watermarks.
- Upload or select the image and process it.
- Insert the resulting cutout into the design.
- If the app provides a PNG download, save that file separately before making additional edits.
A marketplace app is not necessarily Canva’s own Background Remover and is not automatically covered by Canva Pro. The app may have its own account requirements, image-processing service, retention policy, credits, and commercial-use terms. Do not upload confidential client material until you understand those terms.
Method 5: Remove the background outside Canva, then upload the PNG
When Canva’s free allowance is gone, this is often the most dependable occasional-use workflow:
- Use a background-removal service.
- Download the result as a transparent PNG.
- In Canva, open Uploads and upload the PNG.
- Place it in the design, resize it, and layer it over the new background.
Adobe Express
Adobe’s public Background Remover accepts JPEG, PNG, or WebP files up to 40 MB, lets users get started without an account, and downloads a transparent PNG. The basic workflow is upload, wait for automatic removal, inspect the result, and download.
Adobe’s help documentation warns that automatic removal can take away fine details or low-contrast areas. That matters for hair, lace, glass, pale clothing, and subjects photographed against a similar-colored background.
PhotoRoom
PhotoRoom’s web instructions describe a free Background Remover utility: upload a photo, allow automatic processing, optionally edit it, and download the result. Confirm the current export and usage terms for your particular image before using it commercially.
remove.bg
remove.bg is closely related to Canva: Canva acquired Kaleido, the company behind remove.bg, and Canva has described its Background Remover as originating from a remove.bg integration. That relationship does not mean Canva Free and remove.bg have identical limits.

According to remove.bg’s free-use documentation, website processing is free for low-resolution images up to 0.25 megapixels for personal use. Larger images, previews, subscriptions, or credits may be treated differently, particularly for commercial work. Check the current terms before selecting it for product catalogs or client projects.

Use a local editor for confidential or difficult images
If the image contains private information, sensitive client material, or a subject you do not want uploaded to another service, use a local image editor. For example, GIMP’s Foreground Select tool provides a manual foreground-extraction workflow. It takes longer than one-click AI removal but gives you more control over the mask and avoids sending the image to a web remover.
Method 6: Upload a transparent PNG that already exists
If you already have a transparent logo, signature, illustration, sticker, or product cutout, no background-removal tool is necessary:
- Make sure the file is a genuine transparent PNG rather than a JPG with a white background.
- Upload it to Canva.
- Place it over your design.
- Resize, recolor, or layer it as needed.
This method avoids the removal step. Uploading an ordinary JPG to Canva does not make it transparent.
How to replace the background after removing it
Once the subject is isolated, you can:
- add a solid color behind it;
- upload another photograph and send it backward;
- choose a stock image or texture from Canva’s media library;
- use a background-changing tool to replace the original scene;
- use a background-generating tool when you specifically want an AI-created environment.
For a polished composite, check the cutout before adding effects. A hard halo or leftover wall becomes more visible against a new background. You may also need to add a controlled shadow so a product or portrait does not appear to float. A generated background is not the same thing as transparency: it creates a new scene, while Background Remover leaves the area behind the subject empty.
How to get cleaner edges
Hair, fur, feathers, lace, and foliage
Fine details are the hardest cases for automatic segmentation. A remover may delete wispy strands, leave a halo, cut holes into the subject, or retain pieces of the old background.
- Review the cutout against both a light and dark background.
- Use Restore to paint back missing details when Canva provides it.
- Use Erase to remove remaining background fragments.
- Start with the highest-quality original rather than a screenshot or compressed social-media image.
- Use a dedicated masking editor when the edge must be exact.
White, black, and low-contrast subjects
Canva specifically markets removal for white and black backgrounds through its white-background and black-background tools. However, the system is not simply deleting every white or black pixel. It is attempting to determine which areas are subject and which are background.
A white shirt against a white wall, black hair against a dark backdrop, gray artwork on gray paper, glassware, reflections, and translucent fabric can all confuse the remover. White highlights and black outlines may be mistaken for background. If possible, improve the source first by increasing contrast or photographing the subject against a contrasting backdrop.
Shadows and reflections
Decide whether the shadow belongs to the presentation:
- For a logo or sticker, you will usually want the shadow removed.
- For an e-commerce product image, retain or recreate a controlled shadow if it helps the product look grounded.
- For a portrait, keep a subtle shadow only if it matches the replacement background.
Multiple people or objects
An automatic remover may keep every visible subject, retain only the most prominent one, remove a secondary object, or join nearby objects into one cutout. Crop the source more tightly or simplify the image before processing if you need just one person or item.
Flat-color logos and artwork
AI subject removal is not always the best choice for a simple logo or painting on a flat-color background. A manual color-selection or mask workflow in a dedicated editor may preserve clean letterforms and hard edges more accurately. Also confirm that you have permission to use the logo or artwork.

Why is the background still white?
A white result does not always mean that removal failed. Check these possibilities:
- The image was never processed. The original may still be on the page.
- The Canva page is white. Transparency can look white until you place a contrasting element behind the image.
- The file was exported as JPG. JPG cannot preserve transparent pixels.
- The transparent-background option was not enabled. Some Canva export surfaces require you to select it.
- The source contains a white foreground shape. A white logo, shirt, highlight, or border may be part of the subject.
- The image was flattened by another service. Recheck the downloaded file before uploading it again.
- Your image viewer displays transparency as white. Test the PNG in Canva over a dark rectangle or colored page.
For a reusable file, export through Share → Download → PNG and enable Transparent background when available. Canva’s transparent-image guidance documents this workflow for Pro users; the one-time free tool separately advertises a transparent PNG download.

Canva lists Magic Eraser, Magic Grab, and Background Remover among its premium image tools. A photo set to 50% opacity is still a rectangular photo; it is not a cutout.
What to do when BG Remover is missing or fails
The button is missing
Work through these checks:
- Select the image itself, not the page, frame, group, or another design element.
- Open Edit image, Edit photo, and Effects; Canva uses different labels in different surfaces.
- Try the standalone Background Remover page.
- Try Canva in a desktop browser if the mobile app does not show the option.
- Check whether the account’s free use has already been consumed or whether the tool is Pro-locked.
- Re-upload the original image instead of a previously edited design export.
- Search Apps for a third-party remover, or use an external service and upload the resulting PNG.
Canva removes the wrong area
This usually happens when the subject and background share colors, several objects are similarly prominent, or the subject is partly transparent. Try a tighter crop, a clearer original, stronger contrast, or manual cleanup. If the image remains ambiguous, a local masking editor may be more reliable than repeated one-click attempts.
The result is blurry
Use the largest, sharpest original available. Blurriness can come from a low-resolution source, enlarging the image, downscaling during processing, a free tool’s preview limit, or repeated compression. Do not enlarge a small cutout and expect it to regain lost detail.
Current limits and changing Canva labels
Canva’s older or still-crawled Learn documentation has listed the following figures:
- images under 9 MB;
- images above 10 megapixels potentially being downscaled to 10 MP;
- up to 500 images in 24 hours for Pro users;
- video background removal for videos originally under 90 seconds;
- mobile video uploads through the Uploads tab rather than Camera Roll or Gallery.
These figures should not be treated as permanent product limits. Canva’s current product and pricing pages do not consistently repeat all of them, and the live editor may impose different restrictions. If a large image, batch workflow, or video project matters, rely on the current in-product error message or Canva’s current Help Center rather than planning around an old number.
Canva’s current and recently documented labels include Edit image, Edit photo, Effects, BG Remover, Background Remover, Erase, Restore, Configure, Apply, and Done. The exact wording can differ between desktop, mobile, and standalone tools.

Background removal does not grant permission to use the image. You still need the rights to the original photograph, logo, artwork, person’s likeness, or stock asset. Canva’s Content License Agreement governs Canva content, but it does not automatically clear the rights to every image you upload.

Canva marketplace apps and external removers have their own processing and privacy terms. Review those terms before uploading private portraits, unreleased product images, client work, documents, or images containing personal information. A local editor is the safer choice when the source must remain on your device.
