Windows 11 Paint can remove the background from an image without Paint 3D or a separate web app. Open the image, choose Remove background, inspect the cutout, then save it as a PNG to preserve transparency.
Remove an image background in Paint
The automatic remover detects the main subject and removes the surrounding background. It works best when the subject is distinct from its surroundings.

- Select File > Open, browse to the image, and select Open.
- Select Remove background on the Paint toolbar.
- Inspect the result. Paint shows transparent areas as a checkerboard pattern when transparency is visible on the canvas.
Microsoft introduced background removal for the whole canvas or a selected rectangular area. Paint 3D is not required. See Microsoft’s background-removal announcement for the original rollout details.

Remove the background from only part of the image
To target one subject in a crowded image, restrict automatic detection to a rectangular area:
- Select Select > Rectangle.
- Drag a rectangle around the subject or area you want to keep. Avoid cutting through the subject’s edges.
- Select Remove background.
Microsoft documents rectangular selection as the way to target part of the canvas. Paint does not document a manual keep/remove brush for refining the remover’s mask.
Where to find Remove background
Paint’s interface varies by app version and rollout. In Paint version 11.2412.271.0 and later Insider builds, Microsoft documented this route:

Copilot icon on the toolbar > Remove background
The Copilot menu may also contain Cocreator, Image Creator, and Generative erase. Microsoft’s Paint Copilot menu announcement describes that layout. Paint updates through the Microsoft Store, and features can roll out gradually, so not every Windows 11 PC has the same layout.
Microsoft’s Paint release notes list version 11.2605.61.0 as rolling out to Beta and Release Preview channels on June 24, 2026. That release included general fixes but did not change the basic background-removal workflow.
Save the cutout with a transparent background
Choose PNG to retain transparency:
- Select File > Save as.
- Choose PNG picture.
- Enter a filename and select Save.
PNG supports transparency. JPEG does not, so saving as JPEG replaces transparent areas with an opaque background. Microsoft describes Paint’s support for transparent PNG files in its Paint layers and transparency update.

Why does the removed background look white?
A white-looking area does not necessarily mean removal failed. Check these possibilities:

- A white layer is covering the cutout. Open Layers and hide or remove the visible background layer.
- The image was saved in a format without transparency. Reopen the original, remove the background again, and save as PNG picture.
Paint’s layer panel supports adding, removing, hiding, duplicating, reordering, and merging layers. If placing the cutout over another image, check that the original background layer is hidden.
Fix rough edges and incorrect detection
Paint’s remover performs automatic segmentation rather than tracing a precise outline. It may struggle when the subject blends into the background, when there are multiple people or objects, or around hair, fur, transparent items, shadows, reflections, and thin objects. A subject touching the edge of the selected rectangle can also affect the result.

- Undo with Ctrl+Z if needed.
- Use Select > Rectangle to isolate the intended subject.
- Keep the selection boundary from cutting through the subject.
- Zoom in to inspect for halos or missing sections.
- Use Paint’s eraser or selection tools for small corrections.
For complex edges such as hair, fur, or glass, a dedicated image editor may provide more precise results than Paint.

Do I need Paint 3D to remove a background in Windows 11?
No. The current Windows 11 Paint app has its own automatic Remove background command.
Why can’t I see Remove background in Paint?
Update Paint through Microsoft Store, restart the app, and check both the toolbar and Copilot > Remove background. The command’s location and availability vary by version and rollout.
What file type keeps the background transparent?
Save the image as a PNG using File > Save as > PNG picture. JPEG cannot store transparency.

Can Paint remove a background manually around hair or fur?
Paint’s remover is automatic and does not document a detailed keep/remove masking brush. You can use rectangular selection and small corrections, but complex edges may need a dedicated image editor.
