Yes—you can remove a photo background on a supported iPhone without downloading a separate app. If your iPhone runs iOS 26, open the image in Preview, tap More → Remove Background, then export the result as a PNG when you need real transparency. Apple currently lists iOS 26.6 as the latest iOS release as of August 10, 2026.
Recommended Free Tools
For a quick cutout rather than a standalone image file, open the photo in Photos, touch and hold the person, pet, object, or logo, and choose Copy, Share, or Add Sticker. That subject-lift feature works on iOS 16 or later on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later.

These are different workflows: Photos is quickest for copying or sharing a subject, while Preview is the better native choice for producing a transparent PNG that you can use in a painting reference, collage, marketplace listing, design, or another composition.
Choose the right iPhone method
What people call “removing a background” can mean several different things. Choose the result you actually need before you start:
| What you want | Best method | What to expect |
|---|---|---|
| A quick cutout for a message, note, or sticker | Photos subject lift | Fast and built in, but it is not a complete file-export or compositing workflow. |
| A standalone image with transparent pixels | Preview on iOS 26 | Remove the background, then export as PNG. |
| To remove a person or object while keeping the surrounding scene | Clean Up in Photos | Apple Intelligence reconstructs the area behind the removed object; it does not make a transparent cutout. |
| To put the subject over a new photo, color, or designed scene | Preview plus a compositing app | Export a transparent PNG, then use an app such as Canva, Adobe Express, Photoshop, Pages, or Keynote. |
| Fine control around hair, fur, glass, smoke, or complicated edges | A dedicated editor | More erase, restore, masking, and refinement tools, but usually more steps and possible cloud or account requirements. |
| A blurred background | A blur or portrait-editing tool | The original background remains, only softened. Blurring is not background removal. |
Method 1: Remove the background in Preview on iPhone
On iOS 26, Preview is Apple’s most direct native workflow when the result must be a usable image file. Apple documents both a Remove Background command in Preview and PNG export for images.
The Tool Desk

This workflow requires iOS 26 and the Preview app. Apple’s iOS 26 compatibility list begins with iPhone 11 and includes later models, as well as iPhone SE (2nd generation) and later. If your phone cannot run iOS 26, use the Photos subject-lift method below or a third-party editor.
If the picture is already a file
- Open Preview on your iPhone.
- Open the image.
- Tap the More button.
- Tap Remove Background.
- Inspect the cutout. If the selection is not useful, tap More → Undo.
- When the result looks acceptable, tap the actions menu next to the filename.
- Tap Export.
- Choose PNG.
- Adjust the file-size slider only if you need a smaller file, then save or share the exported image.
The important final step is the format choice. A PNG can preserve transparent pixels; a JPEG cannot. If you export the cutout as JPEG, the transparent area may become a solid color or be flattened by the receiving app.
If the picture is only in Photos
You can move a photo from Photos into Preview through the clipboard:
- Open Photos and display the picture.
- Tap Share.
- Tap Copy Photo.
- Open Preview.
- Tap New Document.
- Tap New from Clipboard.
- Tap More → Remove Background.
- Export the result as PNG using the steps above.
Apple documents the New from Clipboard workflow in Preview. This route is useful when the source is in your Photos library but you want the file-oriented controls in Preview.

What Preview can—and cannot—refine
Preview is a quick automatic background remover, not a professional masking studio. Apple’s iPhone documentation does not describe a manual brush, edge-refinement control, hair-detail slider, or subject-by-subject masking tool in this workflow. Check the result carefully, particularly around loose hair, fur, glass, thin straps, wires, plant stems, reflections, shadows, and low-contrast edges.
For a simple person, pet, product, object, or logo against a reasonably distinct background, Preview may be all you need. For a painting composite or a commercial image where the edge must be exact, export the first result and refine it in an editor with erase, restore, or mask controls.
Method 2: Lift a subject in Photos
Photos has a faster gesture for isolating the main subject. It is best thought of as a subject lift or photo cutout, rather than a complete background-removal-and-export tool.
Steps
- Open Photos.
- Open the picture full-screen.
- Touch and hold the main subject—not an empty area of the background.
- Wait for an outline to appear around the subject.
- Choose one of the available actions: Copy or Copy Subject, Share, or Add Sticker.
You can also keep holding the subject and drag it into a supported app. Apple says the feature works in Photos, Safari, Quick Look, and other supported locations; its subject-lift guide also explains that a subject can be lifted from a paused video frame.

Compatibility
Apple says photo cutouts are available on iOS 16 and later on iPhone XS, iPhone XS Max, iPhone XR, and later. See Apple’s photo cutout support page if the gesture is unavailable or your model is uncertain.

What this method is good for
- Copying a person or pet into a message, note, or document.
- Sharing a quick isolated subject.
- Creating a sticker.
- Dragging an object into a supported design or document app.
- Getting a cutout from one paused video frame.
The important limitation
Apple explicitly says that a subject created with this feature cannot be pasted onto another photo using the built-in cutout action alone. In other words, Photos can lift and share the subject, but it does not provide a complete layer-based photo-compositing workflow through that gesture.
If you want to place the person, pet, product, or object over a second image, use Preview to create a PNG or move the cutout into an editor that supports layers, such as Canva, Adobe Express, Photoshop, Pages, Keynote, or another suitable app.
Apple’s Photos documentation describes copying and sharing the cutout, but does not document a dedicated Export as transparent PNG command in the subject-lift menu. Therefore, use Photos for speed and Preview when a dependable standalone transparent file is the goal. Do not assume that every Share destination preserves PNG transparency.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteHow to save a genuinely transparent image
A cutout displayed without its original background is not automatically the same thing as a transparent image file. For a file you can place over another background, use this sequence:
- Remove the background in Preview or another editor.
- Export or download as PNG.
- Avoid JPEG when transparency matters.
- Open the saved file in Files or a design app and check it over both a light and dark background.
Apple’s image asset guidance recommends PNG when transparency is needed. The PNG format can retain transparent pixels around the subject. JPEG is intended for an opaque rectangular image and cannot retain those transparent pixels.
Why does the cutout have a white or black rectangle?
A white or black rectangle does not always mean the selection itself failed. Possible causes include:
- The image was exported or converted to JPEG.
- The receiving app flattened the transparent area.
- The app is showing transparent pixels against a white or black preview color.
- You saved a screenshot instead of the original image file.
Check the file type or extension in Files, then place the image over a strongly contrasting color in a design app. Do not take a screenshot: a screenshot records the rectangular image as displayed, not the underlying transparent pixel data.
Remove, replace, blur, or clean up the background?
These terms describe different operations:
- Remove the background
- The selected subject remains and the surrounding background pixels are removed, normally producing transparency when exported correctly as PNG.
- Lift the subject
- Photos identifies and separates a subject so you can copy, share, drag, or turn it into a sticker. It is a quick reuse action, not necessarily a saved transparent file.
- Replace the background
- The subject is placed over a solid color, another photo, or a generated scene. This requires a compositing or design tool after isolation.
- Blur the background
- The original scene stays in the image but is softened. The background is still present, so the result is not transparent.
- Remove distracting objects
- An unwanted person, sign, object, or blemish is removed while software generates replacement content to fill the scene.
Clean Up is not transparent background removal
Apple’s Clean Up tool is for removing distractions while preserving a filled-in scene. You can use it to remove a person in the distance, a sign, an object, or a blemish. It is the wrong tool if you want the foreground subject alone on transparency, a product cutout, or a person placed over a different photograph.
Clean Up uses Apple Intelligence to generate replacement background content, and the result can vary. Apple lists these requirements: iPhone 15 Pro or iPhone 15 Pro Max, all iPhone 16 models and later supported models, and iOS 18.1 or later. Availability also varies by region and language; check Apple’s Clean Up requirements. To see how Apple describes tapping, brushing, and circling distractions, consult the Clean Up guide.
A useful rule is simple: Clean Up removes something from a scene; Preview removes the scene around something.
How to put the cutout over another photo
Photos’ subject-lift gesture alone cannot do this, according to Apple. Instead:
- Create the cutout in Preview and export it as a PNG, or copy/share the subject into an editor.
- Open a design or editing app that supports a background image and a separate foreground layer.
- Add the second photo as the background.
- Import the PNG as the foreground layer.
- Resize and position the subject.
- Inspect the edge against the new background and refine it if needed.
This is useful for making a painting reference board, testing a figure against a different setting, creating a product mockup, or building a collage. Pages and Keynote can handle simple placements; Canva, Adobe Express, and Photoshop offer more purpose-built compositing controls.

Third-party options when Apple’s tools are not enough
You do not need a third-party app for a straightforward supported-iPhone cutout. A third-party tool becomes worthwhile when you need manual edge correction, a new background, repeated production work, layers, batch-style workflows, or a clear download control.
Adobe Express
Adobe Express offers one-click background removal and a transparent PNG download workflow. Adobe’s instructions include a No fill background option for transparent exports; see the Adobe Express background-removal instructions.
Choose it when you want to remove the background and immediately make a social graphic, flyer, thumbnail, product image, or simple composition. Adobe’s online remover processes uploaded files through its service, so review Adobe’s terms and privacy information before uploading sensitive, confidential, or private photographs. A native Apple workflow avoids sending the image to a third-party background-removal website, although that should not be interpreted as a blanket guarantee that every part of every iOS workflow is entirely offline.

Canva is convenient when the cutout is part of a larger design. In the Canva mobile app:
- Tap the image.
- Tap Effects.
- Tap Background Remover.
- Use Erase or Restore to correct the selection.
- Apply the edit.
- Download as PNG when transparency is required.
Canva is particularly useful for painting mood boards, social posts, thumbnails, flyers, and collages because the new background and surrounding layout can be built in the same project. Access is not universally or permanently free in every context: Canva distinguishes limited free use from repeated use or Pro access in some cases. Its Background Remover guide and logo background-removal information show the current workflow and limitations.
Photoshop on iPhone
Adobe’s Photoshop mobile app provides Remove background from the iPhone home screen, after which you can add an image, fill the background with a color, or generate a background. See Adobe’s Photoshop mobile background replacement guide.
Photoshop makes more sense than a native one-tap tool when you need layers, replacement backgrounds, further retouching, or an Adobe-based workflow. It is unnecessary overhead for a clean, simple cutout that Preview can handle.
Troubleshooting
There is no Remove Background command in Preview
- Check Settings → General → Software Update and confirm that the iPhone is running iOS 26 or later.
- Confirm that the image is open in Preview, not merely being viewed in Photos.
- Try opening the image as a file from Files.
- If the original is in Photos, use Share → Copy Photo, then Preview → New Document → New from Clipboard.
- Use Photos subject lift as the fallback if your iPhone cannot use the iOS 26 Preview workflow.
Apple’s current instructions require an image to be open in Preview before the More → Remove Background command appears. The Preview image-editing guide is the reference for the current interface. Older guides may instead show Files → touch and hold the image → Quick Actions → Remove Background. That route was documented for iOS 16-era software by Tom’s Guide, but it should be treated as an older or version-dependent option rather than the universal current path.
No outline appears when I touch and hold the subject in Photos
- Open the image full-screen rather than working from a small thumbnail.
- Touch and hold the actual person, pet, product, object, or logo.
- Try the higher-resolution original instead of a compressed copy or screenshot.
- Use a photo with more contrast between the subject and its background.
- Try Preview or a dedicated editor if Photos cannot confidently identify the subject.
Apple describes the visible outline as the indication that the subject has been isolated. These checks are practical ways to improve detection, not guarantees that every image will work.
The hair, fur, glass, or shadow looks wrong
Automatic segmentation is most vulnerable at fine or semi-transparent edges. Inspect loose hair and fur, thin straps, wires, plant stems, smoke, glass, reflections, cast shadows, and areas where the subject has nearly the same color as the background. Check the result over both white and dark colors; a fringe that is invisible on one background can be obvious on another.
Preview does not document manual brush or mask controls for correcting those details. If the edge matters, move the PNG into Canva, Adobe Express, Photoshop, or another editor with Erase, Restore, or layer-mask controls.
The wrong person or object was selected
Automatic tools may choose one primary subject, a group, or an unexpected combination when people and objects overlap. The native Photos and Preview instructions do not document manual subject-by-subject edge editing. Try a clearer source image, isolate one subject at a time, or use an editor where you can erase and restore parts of the mask.

The output is white or black instead of transparent
- Export again as PNG.
- Do not export as JPEG.
- Do not use a screenshot.
- Check the file type in Files.
- Open the image over a contrasting background in a design app.
Some apps display transparency against white or flatten it when importing. The display color alone is not proof that the file lacks transparency.
I have an older iPhone
If your iPhone is an iPhone XS, XS Max, XR, or newer and runs iOS 16 or later, try the Photos subject-lift gesture. The Preview background-removal instructions require iOS 26, whose compatible-device list begins with iPhone 11 and iPhone SE (2nd generation). On an older or unsupported phone, use a suitable third-party editor or a computer-based tool.
Can I remove the background from a video?
Photos can lift a subject from a paused video frame. That gives you a cutout from one still image; it does not remove the background from the entire moving video.
For a moving subject over transparency or a replacement scene, use a video editor with subject masking, background removal, or green-screen support. Do not expect the Photos touch-and-hold gesture to export a transparent video.
How do I preserve the original?
Keep the original photo and create a separate cutout file. Before editing a file in Preview, use its file-management controls to duplicate it, and use Undo if you need to reverse the operation. Apple documents saving, duplicating, moving, and undoing changes to Preview files.
A practical setup is to retain the untouched original in Photos or Files, save the transparent version with a new filename such as subject-cutout.png, and keep any composited version separate. This lets you make a better mask later without repeatedly cutting down an already edited image.
Best workflow for painting and design projects
For a painting reference, collage, or composition test, use the least complicated workflow that gives you the needed control:
Recommended Free Tools
- Simple cutout: use Photos subject lift to copy a figure, animal, object, or logo into a note or document.
- Reusable transparent asset: use Preview, remove the background, and export a PNG.
- Composition test: import the PNG into Canva, Adobe Express, Photoshop, Pages, or Keynote and place it over the reference background.
- Important edge detail: inspect and refine hair, fur, glass, shadows, or overlapping forms in an editor with masking tools.
- Final artwork: treat the cutout as a planning or compositing aid and preserve the original source separately.
Do not use Clean Up for this purpose: it reconstructs a scene after removing distractions, rather than giving you a transparent subject to reposition.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I remove a picture background on an iPhone without downloading an app?
Yes, if the iPhone supports the relevant native feature. On iOS 26, use Preview: open the image, tap More, choose Remove Background, and export as PNG. On iOS 16 or later, supported iPhones can also lift a subject in Photos for copying or sharing. Preview is the better native route when you need a standalone transparent file.
Why does my transparent PNG look white in Photos or another app?
The app may display transparency against white, or it may have flattened the file during import. Confirm that the file is PNG rather than JPEG, avoid screenshots, and place the image over a contrasting color in a design app to test it.
Can I use the iPhone Photos cutout directly on another photo?
Not through the built-in Photos cutout action alone. Apple says the lifted subject cannot be pasted onto another photo using that feature. Export a transparent PNG with Preview or move the subject into an editor that supports layers and compositing.
Does Clean Up make a transparent cutout?
No. Clean Up removes distracting people or objects and generates replacement content so the original scene remains filled in. Use Preview or a background-removal editor when you need the foreground subject isolated on transparency.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: For a quick message or sticker, touch and hold the subject in Photos. For a real transparent image file, use Preview on iOS 26 → More → Remove Background → Export → PNG. Use Clean Up only for removing distractions from a scene, and switch to Canva, Adobe Express, Photoshop, or another editor when you need background replacement or precise edge refinement.
