Clean bathroom mold from hard, nonporous surfaces with detergent and water or a labeled mold product, dry the area completely, and fix the moisture source at the same time. Bleach is optional: the CDC allows no more than 1 cup of household bleach in 1 gallon of water for hard surfaces, and it must never be mixed with ammonia or another cleaner. Mold that has penetrated drywall, ceiling tile, carpet, fabric, or upholstery may require removal and replacement rather than repeated scrubbing.
Ventilation and humidity control determine whether the growth returns. Exhaust shower moisture outdoors, repair leaks, dry wet materials promptly, and keep indoor relative humidity below 60 percent; the CDC recommends no higher than 50 percent, while the EPA considers 30–50 percent ideal.

What people call “black mold” in a bathroom
Dark growth on grout, caulk, tile, ceilings, or around fixtures is commonly called black mold. You do not need to identify its species before dealing with visible growth. The practical questions are where it is growing, whether the material is porous, how much disturbance cleaning will create, and what is keeping the surface wet.
There is no practical way to remove every mold spore indoors. The EPA’s guidance is that moisture control—not a particular chemical—is the way to control indoor mold growth. Read the EPA overview at What are ten things I need to know about mold?.

Should you test bathroom mold first?
Routine home mold testing is not recommended by the CDC. Sampling can be expensive, health effects vary, and there are no established standards for an “acceptable” indoor quantity. A test also does not remove the growth or correct a leak. If you can see or smell mold, concentrate on safe removal and moisture correction instead. Testing may be considered when a qualified professional needs information for a complicated building or health investigation, but it should not delay cleanup.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsCheck the risk before you disturb the growth
Stop the moisture source
Look for a dripping supply or drain line, failed shower caulk, roof or wall leak, condensation on a cold pipe, or a fan that exhausts into the attic or wall cavity. A clean surface will become moldy again if the leak or persistent dampness remains.
Protect people who should not be in the work area
Keep people with asthma or other health concerns away while mold is being disturbed, and consult a health professional when appropriate. Open a door or window when practical and safe, and use an exhaust fan that vents outdoors to provide fresh air. Do not blow a fan directly across mold before it is contained; moving air can spread spores to clean areas.

Use basic protective equipment
Wear nonporous gloves and sealed goggles. For a larger area or work that will heavily disturb moldy material, follow CDC and NIOSH respiratory-protection guidance and consider hiring a qualified remediation professional. The CDC’s cleanup recommendations are at Mold Clean Up Guidelines and Recommendations.
How to clean mold from tile, grout, glass, and metal
- Repair or isolate the leak. Stop plumbing, roof, wall, or fixture leaks before cleaning. Scraping or washing a wet surface without addressing the source only postpones the recurrence.
- Ventilate the room. Open a window or door where safe, and run an exhaust fan that discharges outdoors. Keep children, pets, and anyone advised to avoid mold away from the bathroom.
- Put on gloves and goggles. Use nonporous gloves and eye protection before applying cleaner or disturbing growth.
- Wash with detergent and water. Apply a household detergent solution to tile, glass, glazed ceramic, metal, and other hard, nonporous surfaces. Scrub until visible growth is removed, working in a way that limits splashing.
- Rinse if the product label requires it and dry immediately. Use clean water as directed, then wipe the surface completely dry. Do not leave grout, trim, or fixture joints damp after cleaning.
- Use bleach only if you choose it and only at the permitted strength. The CDC allows a solution of no more than 1 cup of household laundry bleach in 1 gallon of water for hard surfaces. Follow the bleach label, provide fresh air, and never mix bleach with ammonia or any other cleanser because poisonous gas can result.
- Inspect after drying. Remaining discoloration can be a stain rather than active growth. If growth remains in caulk or a porous backing, remove and replace that material instead of repeatedly coating it with cleaner.
- Do not cover active mold. Never paint or apply new caulk over visible mold or a damp surface. Cleaning and complete drying come first.
Detergent, bleach, or a labeled mold product?
| Method | Best use | Important limits |
|---|---|---|
| Detergent and water | Routine scrubbing of tile, glass, glazed grout, metal, and other hard surfaces | Requires physical removal of the growth and thorough drying; it does not correct leaks or condensation. |
| Bleach solution | An optional treatment for hard surfaces when used according to the CDC limit | Use no more than 1 cup household bleach per 1 gallon of water. Never combine with ammonia or another cleaner. Follow the product label and ventilate. |
| Labeled household mold product | Products whose directions specify bathroom or mold use | Follow the label for dilution, contact time, ventilation, rinsing, and compatible materials. Do not combine products. |
No cleaner can substitute for drying and source repair. On painted or caulked surfaces, aggressive scrubbing or strong chemicals can damage the finish; test a small inconspicuous area and follow the surface and product instructions.

When mold is in drywall, ceiling tile, carpet, or fabric
Porous materials absorb water and can hold growth below the visible surface. Mold in drywall, ceiling tile, carpet, upholstery, fabric, or similar materials may be impossible to clean completely. Discard or replace items that cannot be thoroughly cleaned and dried. Avoid cutting, tearing, or sanding moldy material unnecessarily, because disturbance spreads particles.

If a bathroom ceiling or wall has been wet, first stop the leak and determine whether the substrate is sound. Soft, swollen, crumbling, or persistently musty drywall is a sign that replacement may be safer than painting over it. Bag removed material carefully and keep the work area isolated until debris is gone. Larger or heavily disturbed removals warrant professional assessment.

Control humidity, not just visible stains
Use a digital hygrometer to track indoor relative humidity. Keep it below 60 percent; the CDC recommends no higher than 50 percent throughout the day, and the EPA identifies 30–50 percent as the ideal range (with 30–60 percent given as a general target). If readings stay high, use a bathroom dehumidifier or air conditioner in addition to ventilation. A single low reading after cleaning does not prove the room stays dry during showers.
Exhaust shower moisture outdoors
Run the bathroom exhaust fan during every shower and leave it on long enough afterward to remove lingering moisture. Confirm that the duct terminates outdoors rather than in an attic, crawlspace, wall, or ceiling cavity. Open a window when practical and safe, but do not rely on a window alone if outdoor conditions are humid or the room has no cross-ventilation.

Dry wet surfaces quickly
Wipe condensation from walls, mirrors, windowsills, and fixtures. Dry bath mats and towels instead of leaving them bunched on the floor. The EPA repeatedly uses a 24–48-hour window for drying wet materials; materials that remain wet longer are more likely to develop mold. Its home guide is A Brief Guide to Mold, Moisture and Your Home.
Repair leaks and condensation promptly
Replace failed caulk, repair plumbing joints, insulate cold pipes that sweat, and correct roof or wall leaks. Check the underside of sinks, the toilet supply and shutoff, the tub or shower valve, and the ceiling below an upstairs bathroom. If a stain keeps enlarging after a repair, have the cavity investigated rather than repainting repeatedly.
Choose finishes that tolerate the room
Avoid carpet and other absorbent finishes in persistently damp bathroom zones. Where appropriate, less-porous trim such as PVC can reduce water absorption, but it will not compensate for an unvented fan or an active leak. Keep grout lines, caulk joints, and trim clean enough that a small amount of moisture does not become a long-term film.

Clean often enough for the shower’s conditions
The EPA says recurring shower or bathroom mold is usually reduced by increasing ventilation and cleaning more frequently. A bathroom used by several people, with long hot showers or limited airflow, may need more frequent wiping and scrubbing than a lightly used, well-ventilated room. Set a routine that includes fan operation, drying, and inspection of corners and sealant joints.

Painting or recaulking after cleanup
Only refinish after the surface is visibly clean, fully dry, and the moisture problem is corrected. Remove moldy caulk rather than sealing it beneath a new bead. For a painted wall or ceiling, clean according to the surface manufacturer’s instructions, allow adequate drying time, and then use a compatible primer and finish coat. Paint is a finish, not a remediation method: it cannot make contaminated drywall sound or stop moisture entering from behind.
Before closing a wall or repainting a ceiling, check for soft gypsum, recurring staining, peeling layers, or a musty odor. Those symptoms indicate that the underlying material or cavity may still be wet and should be assessed.
When professional help is the safer choice
- The affected area is large, widespread, or will require extensive demolition.
- Cleaning will heavily disturb moldy drywall, insulation, ceiling tile, or other porous material.
- A leak, roof defect, or wall cavity cannot be located or remains active.
- Someone in the household has significant asthma, an immune condition, or another health concern that makes exposure risky.
- Mold returns quickly despite verified repairs, outdoor exhaust, and controlled humidity.
- The bathroom has a persistent odor or hidden damage that cannot be inspected without opening construction.
A professional can isolate the work area, select appropriate respiratory protection, remove damaged materials, and verify that the moisture source has been corrected. Hiring help does not eliminate the need for ventilation and humidity control afterward.
A practical maintenance checklist
- Check the hygrometer and keep relative humidity below 60 percent, aiming for the CDC’s no-higher-than-50-percent recommendation when possible.
- Run the exhaust fan during and after every shower; verify that it vents outdoors.
- Wipe condensation and dry mats, towels, and wet fixtures promptly.
- Inspect caulk, grout, supply lines, drains, and the ceiling below for leaks.
- Clean shower surfaces often enough for the room’s use and airflow.
- Never paint or recaulk over visible mold or a damp substrate.
- Replace porous materials that cannot be cleaned and dried completely.
