To recover a corrupt PSD safely, preserve the original, check for a known-good backup, and test only a copy of the file. If no usable backup exists, Photoshop may be able to open a flattened composite, but that does not restore the editable layers and works only if compatibility was enabled when the file was saved.
1. Stop overwriting and assess the problem
Close the document and leave the damaged file unchanged. Make a copy where practical, and do not save a recovery attempt over the source. First check whether one file is affected or several. If multiple files fail, note whether they share a drive or network location, were edited around the same time, or were affected by a power loss, crash, update, or other system change.

2. Restore and verify a known-good copy
Look for an earlier version before trying to reconstruct the damaged file. Check the backup and version-history services you actually use, such as Creative Cloud, Time Machine on macOS, File History on Windows, or another backup destination. Cloud or sync version history is not necessarily available for every local file.
- Restore a candidate version into a separate recovery location when possible.
- Open it in Photoshop and check that the artwork and expected layers are present.
- Use File > Save As to save a verified copy with a new name to an internal disk.
Adobe recommends saving recovered files to an internal disk rather than directly to a network or removable drive. Keep the damaged original until the recovered file has been checked.
3. Try Photoshop’s composite recovery
If the layer data is damaged but the saved composite preview is intact, try opening that composite. Hold the appropriate keys while launching Photoshop and opening the copied file:

Keep holding the keys as Photoshop opens the file. Adobe says this method works only if Maximize PSD and PSB File Compatibility was enabled when the document was saved. The recovered file is flattened with all layers merged; it does not restore the editable layer structure.
- Inspect the opened image to see whether the visible artwork is complete.
- Save it under a new name and location using File > Save As.
- Keep the original unchanged. Do not assume that a visible image means the layers were recovered.
4. Check the filename extension
Inspect the complete filename for an incorrect or extra extension. Correct it only when you know the file’s actual format; use the matching extension, such as .psd for a Photoshop document. Renaming a file does not convert its contents or repair damaged data.
5. Check for a display or graphics problem
If the image looks corrupted on the Photoshop canvas, export it or print it and check the result in another application. If the export or print is correct, the problem may be in the display path rather than the PSD itself.

- In Photoshop’s Performance preferences, temporarily turn off Use Graphics Processor.
- Restart Photoshop and check whether the canvas artifact is gone.
- If disabling the GPU resolves the display problem, update the graphics driver and re-enable GPU acceleration.
This is a test for display artifacts, not a repair for damaged document data. If artifacts remain in the export or print, investigate the file and its source assets as well.
6. Escalate carefully
If backups, composite recovery, and an extension check do not help, third-party PSD utilities are an optional salvage attempt, not a guaranteed repair. Adobe names PSD Parse Online, PSD Recover, and PSD Repair as tools some users have used, but says it does not test or officially support them.
- Work only from a copy of the damaged file.
- Do not assume a tool will restore layers or recover every image detail.
- Consider privacy and retention before uploading confidential artwork to an online service.
- If several files are damaged, investigate shared storage, network, hardware, power, or software issues rather than treating every file as an isolated case.
Prevent future PSD problems
- In Photoshop’s Preferences > File Handling, enable Automatically Save Recovery Information Every. Adobe recommends an interval of 5 or 10 minutes.
- Keep independent backups and check that files can be restored from them. A backup drive can provide another copy; it does not repair a damaged PSD.
- Use Creative Cloud version history when working with Cloud documents, and use a configured file-history or backup system for local files.
- Save locally while actively editing, then copy files to a network location if needed.
- Use local storage formatted appropriately for your operating system. Adobe recommends APFS or HFS+ on macOS and NTFS on Windows, and warns against saving directly to network shares.
- Consider a battery backup and surge protection to reduce exposure to power loss and glitches. These are preventive measures, not recovery methods.
FAQ
Can a corrupt PSD file be repaired?
Sometimes a usable version can be recovered, but there is no guarantee that damaged data can be rebuilt. A known-good backup is preferable; Photoshop’s composite recovery may salvage a flattened image if a compatible preview exists.

Can I recover the layers from a corrupt PSD?
Composite recovery does not restore the layers: Adobe says the recovered file is flattened with all layers merged. If layer editability matters, look for an earlier version or backup.
Why does my PSD look corrupted in Photoshop but export correctly?
If the export or print is correct while the canvas display is not, the graphics processor or driver may be involved. Temporarily disable Use Graphics Processor, restart Photoshop, and check again. If that resolves the artifact, update the graphics driver and re-enable GPU acceleration.

Does renaming a PSD file fix corruption?
No. Correcting a mismatched extension may help Photoshop identify a file whose contents are intact, but renaming does not convert the file or repair damaged data. Change the extension only when you know the actual format.

Are third-party PSD repair tools supported by Adobe?
No. Adobe names several tools that some users have used, but says it does not test or officially support them. Treat them as optional, unverified salvage tools and work from a copy.
Bottom line
Preserve the damaged file, search for a verified earlier version, and test recovery steps on a copy. Photoshop may salvage a flattened composite when compatibility was enabled, but it cannot promise to restore damaged layers. Keep the original until you have checked the recovered image and saved it safely.
