For a small chip in an interior painted wall, first determine whether only the paint is missing or the wall is gouged. Remove unstable paint, clean and dry the area, fill any depression with a compatible paintable compound, smooth it safely, prime exposed substrate when required, and touch up with matching paint. The repair may still be visible if the color, sheen, paint age, or surrounding texture differ.

Before touching the chip: check the substrate and the paint age

This method is for a sound, painted interior wallboard or similar wall surface. Wood trim, metal, masonry, vehicles, and factory-finished products need different materials and preparation.

  • Paint-only loss: the wall remains flat and hard. You may need preparation and touch-up paint, but no filler.
  • Gouge or divot: the surface is lower than the surrounding wall. Use a paintable interior wall patching compound or suitable joint compound rated for that substrate and repair depth.
  • Soft, damp, crumbling, or spreading damage: stop and correct the moisture or structural cause before repainting. Repainting over moisture damage will not solve it.

Consider lead in older U.S. homes

In U.S. housing built before 1978, disturbing old paint can create hazardous lead dust. The year is specific to U.S. federal guidance; elsewhere, follow local health and renovation rules. Keep children and pregnant people away from work and cleanup that disturbs suspect paint. If peeling or chipping paint may contain lead, CDC guidance favors qualified professionals rather than casual paint removal.

EPA guidance says small damaged areas under six square feet should be repaired without sanding. If sanding is truly necessary, wet the area first, limit the work, and clean thoroughly. Dry scraping, abrasive sanding, and scuff-sanding can create dust or chips. Wet-dry abrasives, a mister, plastic sheeting, tape, heavy-duty bags, wipes, and HEPA-filtered vacuum equipment can support dust control, but they do not replace lead-safe procedures.

How to repair a small paint chip

  1. Inspect the edges and the wall

Look for loose flakes, a depression, dampness, softness, powdery material, or damage that extends beyond the visible chip. Photograph or mark the area if you need to monitor spreading. Do not proceed with ordinary dry preparation if the coating may be lead-based.

  2. Remove only unstable paint

On a surface confirmed not to pose a lead hazard, carefully remove flakes that are no longer bonded and leave a firm edge. PPG/Sico surface-preparation guidance calls for removing loose or peeling paint and smoothing the transition. Do not strip sound paint around the chip merely to enlarge the repair.

For old or uncertain coatings, avoid dry scraping and sanding. Use current EPA lead-safe guidance and qualified help where appropriate.

    • QUICK AND EASY repair for nicks and nail holes
    • FOR HOLE REPAIRS up to 3" in diameter
    • PRIMER ENHANCED spackling compound for great hiding power
    • RESISTS FLASHING of paint
  3. Clean the area and let it dry

Use a cleaning method compatible with the existing coating and wall substrate. Remove dust and residue, then allow the area to dry completely. Primer and paint will not bond reliably to dust or a damp patch.

  4. Fill a depression, but not a flat paint loss

If the chip has left a divot, apply an interior wall patching compound or suitable joint compound identified as compatible with the substrate and paintable. Follow the product label for maximum depth, application, drying time, and any required second coat. If the wall is still flat after loose paint is removed, skip filler; adding compound can create a raised spot.

    • No priming required when used indoors, kit contains: spackle, 5x5 fiber tough patch, 4x3 100 grit sandpaper and putty knife
  5. Smooth the repair with dust control

Once filler is fully dry, smooth the patch until it is level with the surrounding wall and the edge is feathered. Minimize abrasion and use the lead-safe approach required for the building. Never dry-sand a surface that may contain lead; EPA guidance calls for wet methods and thorough cleanup when sanding cannot be avoided.

  6. Prime exposed substrate when the system calls for it

Bare wallboard, filler, or another exposed substrate may absorb finish paint unevenly or require a bonding layer. PPG/Sico guidance recommends a suitable primer for bare spots. Choose one compatible with the actual substrate and the existing coating rather than assuming a single “universal” primer works everywhere.

Choosing materials for the repair

Material Use it when What to verify
Paintable interior wall patching compound or joint compound The chip leaves a depression or gouge Substrate compatibility, maximum repair depth, drying instructions, and paintability
Primer Bare wallboard, filler, or another exposed area needs sealing or bonding Compatibility with the substrate, existing coating, and finish paint
Touch-up paint The surface is prepared and any required primer is dry Color, sheen, coating compatibility, and the possibility that the match will remain visible
Lead-safe dust-control supplies Work in older U.S. housing requires controlled disturbance Wet-dry abrasives, mister, plastic sheeting, tape, bags, wipes, and HEPA-filtered equipment are support supplies—not a substitute for lead-safe practice

When not to treat it as a simple touch-up

  • The wall is damp, soft, moldy, or repeatedly damaged: find and repair the leak or moisture source first.
  • Paint is peeling over a broad area or the damage is growing: investigate adhesion, moisture, and substrate problems instead of spot painting.
  • The home was built before 1978 in the United States and the coating is peeling, chipping, or otherwise suspect: obtain lead-safe advice and consider a qualified professional.
  • You cannot identify the substrate or existing coating: select products only after confirming what the wall is made of and what finish is already present.

How to improve the chance of an inconspicuous patch

  • Match sheen as well as color; a correct color in the wrong sheen can still flash under side lighting.
  • Feather the prepared edge instead of leaving a sharp ridge.
  • Use the smallest repair area that reaches sound material.
  • Keep the filler, primer, and paint within their stated compatibility and drying limits.
  • Expect older paint to have changed color and sheen. If an exact match matters, repainting a larger continuous section may be more consistent than repeated spot touches, but the cited guidance does not promise an invisible result.

Quick decision guide

What you find Next action
Flat, sound wall with only a small paint loss Clean, dry, prime bare substrate if required, and touch up with compatible paint.
Small depression with sound surrounding paint Use compatible paintable filler, dry and smooth it, prime if required, then touch up.
Loose or peeling edge Remove only unstable material on a non-lead surface, smooth the edge, and prepare before painting.
Suspected lead paint in U.S. pre-1978 housing Do not dry-sand; follow EPA lead-safe guidance and use qualified help when appropriate.
Moisture-related, soft, or spreading damage Repair the underlying condition before any filler, primer, or finish paint.
