Replacing the knobs or pulls is one of the fastest ways to personalize an IKEA bathroom vanity without replacing the cabinet. The reliable method is to identify the vanity series, measure the existing hole pattern, verify the new screws fit the front, and reuse the holes whenever possible. If the fronts have no holes—or your new hardware uses a different pattern—mark every position with a template and drill only after confirming the front’s construction.

IKEA’s TÄNNFORSEN listing states that knobs and handles are sold separately, and the ENHET guides show that bathroom hardware comes in several styles and dimensions. Those examples demonstrate the range of choices, not universal compatibility. Treat the vanity model, hole spacing, front thickness, and supplied fasteners as the deciding facts for your installation.

1. Identify the vanity before buying anything

Start with the cabinet, not the hardware display. Find the vanity series and, if possible, record its product or model number from the assembly documents, purchase record, label, or IKEA product page. IKEA’s current TÄNNFORSEN listing is one example in which knobs or handles are purchased separately. ENHET is a different series with its own combinations and hardware examples. A part shown in an ENHET guide should therefore be treated as an example of style and sizing, not as a certified fit for every IKEA bathroom vanity.

Write down whether you are changing a drawer pull, a door knob, or both. A drawer front may have one pair of holes while a door has one central hole; some fronts have no predrilled holes. Also note whether the front is a single panel, a framed panel, or another construction. That information affects where a new hole can safely be drilled and how much screw length is available.

What to record

  • Vanity series and model or product number.
  • Which fronts receive new hardware.
  • Whether each front already has holes.
  • The front’s thickness and visible construction.
  • Any nearby edge, trim, hinge, drawer box, or internal obstruction.

Do not remove plumbing or alter the cabinet installation for a hardware-only makeover. If the front construction or the original installation is uncertain, pause and ask a qualified professional to assess it.

2. Remove one piece and measure the existing pattern

Existing holes are the simplest path to a custom look because they eliminate new drilling. Remove one knob or pull first rather than taking everything off at once. Support the hardware while loosening the screw so the front is not stressed, then keep the screw with the removed piece until you have checked its size and length.

For a knob

Measure the hole diameter only if you need to confirm that a replacement screw passes through cleanly. More importantly, check the front thickness and compare it with the replacement knob’s supplied screw. A knob normally uses one mounting point, but the replacement must still be intended for the front and mounting arrangement you have.

For a two-screw pull

Measure the center-to-center distance between the two existing holes. Measure from the center of one hole to the center of the other, not from the outside edges of the pull or from the edge of a hole. Record the measurement in the unit used by the hardware maker, and repeat it on another front to confirm that the fronts share the same pattern.

Do not assume that a pull that looks the same length will fit. The critical value is the distance between its screw centers. If that distance does not match the existing holes, installing the pull will require a new pattern, a different pull, or a knob that uses one hole.

Check the screw while the hardware is off

  • Compare the supplied screw with the original for diameter and thread style.
  • Check that the screw is long enough to pass through the front and engage the hardware.
  • Check that it is not so long that it can contact the drawer box, shelf, or another component behind the front.
  • Use the fastener orientation specified by the hardware manufacturer; some designs are tightened from the back and others from the front.

Hardware assortments and availability can vary by country and over time. Verify the current package contents and mounting instructions rather than relying on a photograph or an older assembly video.

3. Choose knobs or pulls by fit first, then appearance

Once the measurements are written down, compare replacement bathroom vanity knobs or cabinet pulls on four practical axes: hole pattern, screw fit, grip, and appearance. Style and finish are personal choices. The cited IKEA material shows varied styles and dimensions, but it does not establish that one finish is more corrosion-resistant, more durable, or better for a humid bathroom than another.

Decision factor What to verify Why it matters
Existing hole pattern One hole for a knob or the exact center-to-center spacing for a pull Matching the pattern lets you reuse the front and avoid drilling.
Screw and mounting fit Supplied screw diameter, thread, length, and tightening direction The hardware must clamp the front securely without bottoming out or protruding.
Grip and usability How much room your fingers have and whether the piece is comfortable to operate A visually suitable piece can still be awkward if it is difficult to grasp.
Style and finish Shape, projection, color, and relationship to the room These determine the custom appearance, but they do not prove compatibility.

Knobs

A knob is the straightforward replacement when a front has one existing hole or when you are creating a single-hole pattern. Compare the knob’s base with the available flat area on the front. A broad base may overlap a bevel or raised detail; a narrow base may sit unevenly on a textured surface. Confirm that the screw supplied with the knob suits the front thickness.

Pulls

Pulls can provide a larger grip on a drawer, but a two-screw pull must match the measured spacing or be installed using a newly drilled pattern. Check the pull’s projection so it does not strike an adjacent front when a drawer or door opens. The visual length of a pull is not a substitute for its center-to-center specification.

Using IKEA examples correctly

IKEA’s ENHET bathroom guide lists examples including GUBBARP, BILLSBRO, BAGGANÄS, ENERYDA, HACKÅS, HISHULT, and SKRUVSHULT. They illustrate different looks and dimensions available in IKEA’s bathroom guidance. They are not a promise that each item fits every series or every existing hole pattern. An October 2024 ENHET guide shows a sample combination using SKRUVSHULT knobs and handles; use that as a style reference and verify the dimensions for your own front.

4. Prepare the work area

Empty drawers and cabinets before removing hardware. Open the front fully so you can reach the fastener and see whether the drawer box or hinge is behind the proposed location. Place a soft cloth on the floor or counter to protect the finish if a tool or hardware piece falls.

Gather a tape measure or ruler, pencil, screwdriver or driver bit that matches the fastener, and the new hardware. For a new hole pattern, add a suitable cabinet hardware drill template, a drill and correctly sized bit, masking tape, and a way to keep the front supported. Follow the hardware maker’s tool and bit instructions; the correct bit depends on the screw and front material.

Protect the visible finish

Masking tape can make pencil marks easier to see and helps reduce surface chipping at a marked location, but it is not a substitute for the manufacturer’s drilling instructions. Do not clamp directly onto a finished face without protection. Keep the drill square to the front and use controlled pressure rather than forcing the bit through.

5. Reuse existing holes whenever the measurements match

  1. Remove the original hardware and clean dust or residue from the front around the holes.
  2. Place the replacement knob or pull over the existing holes from the side specified by its instructions.
  3. Insert the supplied screws and turn them by hand for the first few threads. If a screw does not start smoothly, stop and check alignment and thread type.
  4. Tighten until the hardware is secure and the base sits flat. Do not over-tighten; excessive force can mark the finish or damage the front.
  5. Open and close the door or drawer several times. Confirm that the hardware does not hit an adjacent front, hinge, drawer box, shelf, or wall.
  6. Repeat on the remaining fronts, checking alignment as you go rather than waiting until every piece is installed.

If the replacement uses a different number of holes or a different spacing, do not pull the screws diagonally into the old holes. Select a compatible piece, or move to the new-hole procedure.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

6. Plan a new hole pattern with a template

New holes require consistent marking. IKEA’s FIXA guidance describes the drill template as a way to center knobs and handles and keep placement the same across fronts. IKEA Sweden’s article “How is the FIXA drill template used?” states: “The purpose of the drill template is to simplify assembly and ensure that the placement is the same on all fronts.”

Set the reference edges

Choose the edges from which you will measure—typically the same side and the same top or bottom reference for every matching front. Do not alternate between measuring from the hinge side, handle side, top, or bottom. For a pair of doors, decide whether the hardware will mirror across the center gap and record the reference points before marking.

Mark one test front

  1. Position the template against the selected reference edges.
  2. Set the hole locations for the chosen knob or pull according to its center-to-center measurement.
  3. Mark the selected holes through the template, as the FIXA instructions direct.
  4. Hold the hardware over the marks without drilling to check visual height, spacing, and clearance.
  5. Open the door or drawer and inspect the back of the marks for hinges, drawer components, or other obstructions.

Only after the test position looks correct should you transfer the same reference method to the other fronts. Count and compare the distance from each edge. A template improves consistency, but it cannot identify an obstruction hidden inside the front or prove that a particular IKEA series accepts a particular hardware item.

7. Drill new holes carefully

  1. Remove the front from the work area if the manufacturer’s instructions allow it and you can reinstall it correctly. If it must remain attached, support it so drilling does not strain hinges or runners.
  2. Apply the template and recheck both marks. Verify that the hole spacing matches the replacement pull.
  3. Protect the visible face as recommended by the tool and hardware instructions. Keep the drill perpendicular to the front.
  4. Drill with the bit specified for the screw and front construction. Use controlled speed and pressure; forcing the bit can chip the finish or tear the back.
  5. Stop as the bit passes through. Do not continue into the drawer box, shelf, or cabinet behind the front.
  6. Clear dust from the holes and test-fit the hardware before tightening.

Confirm the front’s construction before drilling. A hollow, framed, layered, or otherwise unusual front may need a different fastening method than a solid panel. If you cannot establish what is inside the marked area, do not guess; ask a qualified professional.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

8. Fasten and align every front

Install the hardware from the side specified in its instructions. Start each screw by hand so the threads do not cross. Hold the knob or pull straight while tightening, and stop when it is firm and seated. The goal is a secure grip, not maximum torque.

Use a visual alignment check

  • Stand several feet back and look across the tops and centers of neighboring fronts.
  • Open drawers and doors to check that the new piece clears adjacent hardware and cabinet edges.
  • Run a finger around each base to confirm it is flat and no sharp edge or screw tip is exposed.
  • Recheck the first front after installing several others; a small reference error can become obvious across a row.

If one piece sits higher or lower, measure from the same reference edge again. Do not enlarge a hole casually to force alignment; an oversized hole can prevent the screw from clamping the hardware securely.

9. Troubleshoot common problems

The pull’s holes do not line up

Re-measure center to center. If the new spacing differs from the existing pattern, either return to a pull with the measured spacing, choose a one-hole knob, or create a new pattern with a template. Do not angle screws into mismatched holes.

The screw is too short

Check that the hardware is sitting flat and that you are using the supplied fastener intended for this mounting arrangement. If the package provides alternate lengths, use the one specified for your front thickness. Do not substitute a random screw whose thread or head does not match the hardware.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The screw is too long

Look behind the front before tightening further. A long screw can contact an internal drawer component or cabinet part. Stop installation and follow the manufacturer’s guidance for the correct length; if the front construction is unclear, consult a professional.

The hardware rocks after tightening

Remove it and inspect the contact surface, hole alignment, and screw engagement. A base that is sitting on a bevel or uneven detail may need a different hardware shape. Do not compensate for a poor fit by overtightening.

The new holes look uneven

Check the template’s reference edges and whether the front shifted during marking or drilling. For a single front, a hole that is only slightly misplaced may be concealed by a larger base, but do not assume that a cover will hide structural damage. If the error affects secure fastening or appearance, stop and get advice before enlarging the opening.

10. Keep the project within hardware scope

Changing knobs or pulls does not require moving plumbing, cutting the vanity, or changing the wall installation. Keep the work limited to the fronts and their fasteners. IKEA’s product guidance says uncertain installations should be referred to a professional and that installations must follow applicable local building and plumbing regulations. Those requirements vary by location, so check the rules that apply where the vanity is installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Professional help is sensible when the front’s material is unknown, a new hole would be close to an edge or hinge, the drawer must be dismantled, the supplied hardware does not specify a compatible mounting method, or the vanity is damaged. A professional can identify the construction and prevent a cosmetic upgrade from becoming a structural repair.

11. A repeatable checklist for the finished custom look

  • Series and model recorded.
  • Existing knob hole or pull center-to-center spacing measured.
  • Front thickness and construction checked.
  • Replacement style selected without assuming universal IKEA compatibility.
  • Supplied screw diameter, thread, length, and mounting direction verified.
  • Existing holes reused where they match.
  • New holes marked from consistent reference edges with a suitable template.
  • Hidden clearance checked before drilling.
  • Hardware tightened without over-torquing.
  • Doors and drawers opened repeatedly to verify clearance and alignment.
  • Professional advice obtained if construction or installation remains uncertain.

The custom effect comes from consistent placement and a hardware choice that suits how the vanity is used. Measuring first prevents most avoidable problems; a template makes a new pattern repeatable; and checking the screws against the actual front confirms that the attractive choice is also a secure one.
