You can enlarge an image while preserving as much visible quality as possible, but you cannot perfectly restore detail that a small raster image never contained. Resizing adds pixels by estimating them; AI upscaling can make a result look sharper by predicting plausible detail. For artwork, the right method depends on whether you are enlarging a photo, a painting, a logo, or a screenshot—and whether the goal is screen display or print.

First: decide what “larger” means
Image size can refer to three different things:
- Pixel dimensions: changing, for example, 1,000 × 750 pixels to 2,000 × 1,500. This is upscaling or resampling; software creates new pixels.
- Physical print size: printing the same pixels over a larger area. A 3,000-pixel-wide image printed 10 inches wide has an effective resolution of 300 pixels per inch (PPI). Printed 20 inches wide, it has 150 PPI.
- Displayed size: making an image appear larger on a screen, such as by changing its CSS width. This does not add detail to the image file.
Changing PPI metadata alone does not add pixels. In an editor, changing print dimensions or resolution with resampling off changes the relationship between pixel dimensions and physical size, not the image detail. Adobe explains the relationship between pixel dimensions, resolution, and print size in its resizing and resampling guide.

A large canvas or poster viewed from farther away may work at a lower effective resolution. Ask your printer about its requirements, then calculate pixel width ÷ printed width in inches to estimate effective PPI.

Choose the method for the image
| Image or goal | Good starting point |
|---|---|
| A sharp photo needing a modest increase | Ordinary high-quality resampling |
| A small, compressed, or heavily cropped photo | Try AI upscaling, then inspect carefully |
| A painting or illustration | Resample for a small increase; for a larger one, compare AI output against the original for altered brushwork or texture |
| A logo, icon, or text-heavy graphic | Find or recreate a vector version where possible |
| Pixel art | Nearest-neighbor scaling to preserve hard pixel edges |
| A screenshot with text that must remain accurate | Use ordinary scaling or recreate the text; do not trust AI to reproduce it faithfully |
| A website or app with many image sizes | Resize and deliver suitable variants through a server or image CDN |
| A technical, medical, legal, or evidentiary image | Use a better source or transparent, non-generative processing; do not present invented detail as fact |
Before editing, check whether a larger original exists on the camera, phone, cloud drive, stock site, or source website. If a painting or graphic began as vector artwork, use that original rather than enlarging a small raster export. A better source is the only route to genuinely new captured information.
Enlarge an image in Photoshop
Ordinary resizing
- Open the original and choose Image > Image Size.
- Enable Resample to change the pixel dimensions. Keep the aspect-ratio link enabled so the image does not stretch or squash.
- Enter the target width, height, or percentage. Choose an enlargement-oriented resampling method if your version offers one.
- Review the result at 100% and at its expected display or print size. Click OK when it looks acceptable.
- If needed, apply gentle sharpening after resizing, then export a delivery copy.
Adobe confirms that resampling adds or removes pixels in the Image Size dialog. Available labels and models can vary with Photoshop release and edition, so use the controls shown in your installation. Ordinary interpolation is predictable and useful for modest increases, but it cannot recover missing detail.
Generative Upscale
For a substantially undersized photo or scan, Photoshop’s documented workflow is Image > Generative Upscale, then choose 2× or 4×, select an available model, and click Upscale. Adobe’s documentation dated May 20, 2026 describes different models and output limits, including Firefly Upscaler, Topaz Gigapixel, and Topaz Bloom; access, limits, and credit use may vary by plan and region. Check Adobe’s current Generative Upscale documentation for availability in your version.

- Enjoy high speed scanning in as fast as 8 seconds, with the included USB Type-C cable. With USB Type-C the Cano scan lied 400 has one cable for data and power.
- Preserve detailed photos and images thanks to 4800 x 4800 dpi resolution, and with image enhancements, such as color restore and dust removal, Your photos will continue to look great.
- Enjoy ease of use with 'EZ' Buttons. With auto scan mode, the Scanner automatically detects what you are scanning; built-in PDF buttons, scan and save multi-page pdf's that are editable and searchable
- Paper size: 8.27 x 11.69, 8.50 x 11.69
AI can improve perceived sharpness, but it predicts detail rather than recovering the exact original. Check faces, small objects, patterns, lettering, and painted textures against the source. Keep the original and compare versions; do not use a plausible-looking reconstruction as factual evidence.
Camera Raw Super Resolution
Adobe also describes Super Resolution in Camera Raw as an enlargement option for improving output for uses such as large-format printing. Camera Raw is an Adobe image-processing workflow; the feature is not limited to files that are camera raw formats. The precise control and menu path can depend on your Photoshop and Camera Raw versions. See Adobe’s Super Resolution overview, then inspect the generated result before final sharpening.
Enlarge an image in GIMP
- Open the image and choose Image > Scale Image.
- Enter the target width or height. Keep the chain link enabled to preserve the aspect ratio.
- Choose an interpolation method appropriate to the image, apply the scale, and inspect the result.
- Export a copy in the format you need.
Photographs usually need a smooth interpolation method; pixel art may benefit from nearest-neighbor scaling. No single interpolation method is best for every image. GIMP’s Image > Print Size is different: it changes intended print size or resolution without resampling or changing pixel dimensions, as its documentation explains. GIMP is a capable free option for ordinary resizing, but ordinary scaling does not perform AI detail reconstruction.

Resize with ImageMagick
ImageMagick is useful for repeatable command-line or batch workflows. These examples use Lanczos, a resampling filter; inspect the output, especially for fine edges and texture.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →# Enlarge both dimensions by 200%
magick input.jpg -filter Lanczos -resize 200% output.png
# Fit within a 2400 × 2400 box; > prevents enlarging smaller inputs
magick input.jpg -filter Lanczos -resize "2400x2400>" output.jpg
# Set an exact width and preserve the aspect ratio
magick input.jpg -filter Lanczos -resize 2400x output.jpg
# Enlarge pixel art by 800% while keeping square pixel edges
magick input.png -filter Point -resize 800% output.png
For a photo, a mild sharpening pass can be tested after resizing:
magick input.jpg -filter Lanczos -resize 200% -unsharp 0x0.5+0.5+0 output.jpg
Those sharpening values are only a starting point, not a universal setting. Sharpening can create halos or emphasize noise and compression blocks. Use the original as the input each time rather than resizing a previously resized file. Quote geometry expressions containing shell-sensitive characters. Check whether your output format preserves transparency; JPEG does not. For color-critical work, preserve and verify the intended color profile. See the ImageMagick guides to resizing and filters.

For websites and apps, deliver the right size
If the goal is to show artwork on a website, browser-side enlargement may make it appear larger but cannot improve its underlying pixels. Nor is it usually efficient to send every visitor a very large original. Generate appropriately sized variants, preserve the aspect ratio, and serve dimensions suited to the layout and device pixel ratio. Crop only when the design calls for it. Cloudinary documents responsive resizing and cropping and resize modes such as fit, which preserves proportions within a bounding box, and scale, which can stretch or squash an image if used carelessly.
Cloudinary also offers an AI-based e_upscale transformation. Its current documentation says it scales each dimension by four (16 times as many pixels in total) and lists constraints: the input must be under 4.2 megapixels, animated and fetched images are unsupported, and a derived image may initially be pending. These service details can change; check the current documentation before building a workflow around them.

AI upscaling versus ordinary resizing
Ordinary interpolation estimates new pixel colors from surrounding pixels. AI super-resolution uses a learned model to predict patterns and texture that may make the result look more detailed. That can help with a small photo, an old scan, or a crop, but apparent sharpness is not proof that the new details are true.

- Use ordinary resizing for modest enlargement, adequate source detail, predictable output, or text and technical shapes that must not be reinterpreted.
- Try AI upscaling when the source is much smaller than the target and visual presentation matters, provided you can inspect the result and accept reconstruction artifacts.
- Recreate as vector when crisp scalability matters for a logo, icon, diagram, or simple illustration.
- Find a better original when the image is severely blurred, cropped, compressed, or must be reliable as evidence.
Models can change facial features, invent lettering, repeat textures, or create plastic-looking surfaces and false edges. Preserve the unaltered file, record processing steps when reliability matters, and never treat AI-generated detail as recovered fact in forensic, medical, scientific, or legal work.
Prepare and check the final file
- Resize from the original. Repeated resizing and JPEG saving can compound compression damage. Keep an untouched master and make delivery copies from it.
- Sharpen last, and lightly. Sharpening after the final resize can improve perceived crispness, but it does not restore actual information. Watch for bright or dark halos, grain, ringing, and emphasized JPEG blocks.
- Choose a suitable format. JPEG is convenient for photographs but uses lossy compression. PNG preserves transparency and suits many hard-edged graphics; it cannot restore detail lost earlier. TIFF or a layered editor file can be useful as a master in print workflows.
- Check transparency and color. JPEG cannot retain an alpha channel, so a transparent logo may acquire a background. For print or color-critical work, preserve the intended color profile and confirm the printer’s requirements.
- Inspect at the right scale. Check at 100% for artifacts, then view at the intended screen size or print dimensions. A result that looks rough when greatly magnified may work at its actual viewing distance.
If the enlarged image still looks bad
- Undo and return to the original file.
- If compression noise or color artifacts are prominent, address those before enlargement.
- Try a smaller increase, such as 1.5× or 2× instead of 4×.
- Test another interpolation method or AI model, and compare it with the original.
- Reduce sharpening and avoid aggressive noise removal that erases texture.
- Use a less aggressive crop; cropping discards source pixels.
- Find a larger original or rescan the physical artwork at higher resolution.
- Replace tiny text or rebuild logos and simple graphics as vector elements.
- If the source cannot support the target, accept a smaller output or use a layout that does not depend on extreme enlargement.
Tool options by workflow
The right tool depends on what you do, not on a universal quality ranking. Photoshop suits users who already need a broad editing and print-preparation workflow; Adobe’s current Generative Upscale access and credits depend on plan and model. Topaz Gigapixel is a dedicated desktop candidate for regular enlargement and print preparation, with models intended for different input types; see Topaz’s model guide. Cloudinary fits hosted, responsive image delivery and application workflows. GIMP offers free local resizing, while ImageMagick is suited to scripts and batch processing. Compare results on your own image rather than assuming one tool wins for every painting or photograph.
