If old LEGO bricks look yellowed, start by hand-washing them gently: LEGO permits water up to 104°F (40°C), a soft cloth or sponge, and mild detergent, followed by a clear-water rinse. That can remove surface grime, but it is not a color-restoration treatment. A peroxide-and-UV method was published for LEGO in 2010, but it is not LEGO guidance, and the available evidence does not establish that it is safe for every color or plastic, durable, or harmless to a brick’s condition.
First determine whether the color difference is dirt, ageing, or a normal variation
A brick that looks dull or discolored may simply have accumulated surface dirt. If washing does not change its appearance, the difference may reflect exposure or the brick’s original shade. LEGO says production batches can vary in color and that shades of recycled plastic may be combined, so not every mismatch indicates damage. It also identifies direct sunlight, cigarette smoke, and extreme temperature changes as factors that can gradually affect color. LEGO’s discoloration guidance advises contacting customer service about extremely discolored parts.
Clean bricks using LEGO’s hand-washing instructions
- Wash the pieces by hand in water no hotter than 104°F (40°C), using a soft cloth or sponge. LEGO permits mild detergent; rinse the pieces with clear water afterward. LEGO’s cleaning instructions give this method for routine cleaning.
- For pieces with electronic components or sensitive elements containing metal, use a moistened cloth and mild detergent without perfume or oil rather than immersing them.
- Let the pieces dry away from direct sunlight. Do not use a washing machine or dishwasher, and do not dry them in an oven or microwave or with a hair dryer. Heat can deform pieces, and LEGO specifically cautions against direct sunlight during drying.
Hand-washing may improve the appearance of dirtied pieces; it should not be expected to reverse color changes within the plastic.
Why a treatment meant for ABS may not suit every LEGO element
LEGO identifies ABS as the material used for classic bricks, but not all elements are made from ABS. Its materials overview lists, among others, HIPS for baseplates and arMABS for transparent elements, as well as materials for flexible, structural, and accessory parts. If you do not know what a piece is made of, do not assume a chemical treatment described for yellowed plastic is appropriate for it. Transparent, flexible, printed, or otherwise unusual pieces deserve particular caution.

What the reported peroxide-and-UV method involves—and what is unknown
A 2010 Make: article by Sean Michael Ragan describes treating yellowed plastic with a gel containing 11% hydrogen peroxide, glycerine, vegetable gum, and a small amount of sodium percarbonate, then exposing it to strong ultraviolet light such as sunlight. The article presents this as a way to restore color; it is a historical how-to, not a current LEGO recommendation or a validated conservation procedure.
The method is not established as suitable for every LEGO color or material, and the article does not provide a controlled comparison or demonstrate long-term durability. The available sources do not resolve how likely re-yellowing is, whether treatment can make pieces brittle, or what risks apply to particular colors under typical home conditions. They also do not establish effects on clutch power. Do not treat the reported recipe as a guaranteed fix or as proof that the brick’s original material condition has been restored.

A 2023 peer-reviewed study by a University of Milano-Bicocca team found that 1,390 hours of laboratory photo-ageing of contemporary green LEGO ABS bricks was associated with an approximately 19°C decrease in glass-transition temperature. This result shows that prolonged light exposure can change measured material properties under the study’s laboratory conditions. It is not a measure of ordinary household ageing, and the study did not test peroxide restoration. The study’s findings therefore do not establish whether a home treatment is safe or lasting.

For a valuable, rare, printed, transparent, or flexible piece, preserving it may matter more than changing its appearance. Prefer gentle cleaning and avoid an unvalidated chemical treatment when the part’s material or treatment risk is uncertain.
