Sand a seashell only as much as needed: use light pressure, keep the shell and abrasive damp, and move to finer grits when each coarser grit’s scratches are gone. A naturally glossy shell or thin mother-of-pearl surface may be better left untouched; sanding can remove the finish you want to keep.
Decide whether the shell needs sanding
Sanding removes material, so first consider the shell’s surface and your goal. If it is already naturally shiny, polishing may do more harm than good: the Australian Seashells FAQ describes the nacre layer on shiny shells as ultra-thin. For a shell with only minor roughness, use a fine abrasive or leave the surface alone. For a cut shell pendant, the ACIAR shell-jewelry training manual advises using only fine sandpaper, in the 400–1200 grit range, on scratches in the shiny mother-of-pearl interior.

Shell shape, thickness, surface condition, and intended finish vary. The available shell references offer examples, not one grit sequence that suits every shell.
Choose a sanding route and suitable materials
For hand finishing, use waterproof wet-and-dry sandpaper in assorted grits. Keep the paper and shell wet as you work, particularly through the finer grades used for polishing. Start with the least coarse grit that can reasonably address the roughness; do not use an aggressive grit simply because it appears at the beginning of a sequence.

Sand progressively and check the scratch pattern
- Secure the shell. Hold it steadily without squeezing a fragile edge. Work over a surface where you can control water and catch sanding residue.
- Start with a suitably fine grit. Use light pressure and short, controlled strokes on the rough area. Avoid sanding across a shiny nacre surface unless removing material there is necessary.
- Inspect before changing grits. The ACIAR manual suggests tilting the shell in sunlight so scratches reflect and become easier to see. Continue at the current grit until its scratch pattern has replaced the deeper marks you meant to remove.
- Move to the next finer grit. Each finer grade should remove the scratches left by the previous one. Keep the shell and waterproof paper damp, and do not skip ahead while coarse scratches remain.
- Stop at the finish you want. A long sequence is not a goal in itself. Stop when the roughness is gone or the desired polish is reached, rather than removing extra shell material.
Hand sanding or rotary polishing?
Hand sanding offers direct control on small or delicate areas. A rotary brush with fine sanding paste and jeweler’s rouge is an optional further polishing approach mentioned by the Australian Seashells FAQ, but it can be messy and requires familiarity with power tools. The sources do not provide a controlled performance comparison between hand and rotary methods.
If you use powered equipment, follow the tool and abrasive makers’ instructions, secure the work, wear eye protection, and pause so the shell does not overheat. If you are inexperienced or concerned about damaging a valuable shell, ask a jeweler about polishing it.

Keep dust and debris down
Work damp to minimize airborne residue, and avoid treating dry powered sanding as the default. OSHA and the Australian Asbestos and Silica Safety and Eradication Agency warn that sanding or grinding silica-containing materials can generate respirable crystalline silica dust. Their guidance concerns those materials and workplace exposure; it does not establish that seashells contain crystalline silica or quantify the risk from occasional hobby shell sanding. Do not assume that shell dust is silica dust on the basis of those warnings.
For powered work, use appropriate eye protection, keep the work secure, and avoid overheating the shell. Handle sanding residue carefully and clean the work area without scattering dry dust.
