For one Photoshop document, use File > Save As (or File > Save a Copy) and choose Photoshop PDF—not the general Export As command. For a document with multiple artboards, use File > Export > Artboards To PDF. Keep a PSD or PSB master if you may need to edit the artwork later.
Save one Photoshop document as a PDF
- Open the document in Photoshop desktop.
- Choose File > Save As. If you want to make a PDF copy while keeping your working document in its original format, choose File > Save a Copy instead.
- Choose a destination and enter a filename. In the format menu, select Photoshop PDF, then select Save.
- In the save options, decide whether to preserve Layers and embed the Color profile. These choices affect editability, file size, and color interpretation.
- In the Save Adobe PDF dialog, choose an appropriate preset and review the settings. Select Save PDF to create the file.
The normal single-document workflow is Save As or Save a Copy, rather than File > Export > Export As. Adobe’s current Photoshop PDF instructions describe the save workflow and the PDF dialog’s General, Compression, Output, Security, and Summary panels. Menu labels and Save As behavior can vary somewhat by Photoshop version, operating system, and language.
Save a PDF without replacing your PSD
Choose File > Save a Copy when the PDF is a delivery version and you want the original document to remain your working file. Photoshop’s save-work guidance describes Save a Copy as creating another version while leaving the original document open. In either workflow, retain a PSD or, for very large documents, a PSB master if future Photoshop editing matters. Adobe identifies PSD as the format that preserves Photoshop features most completely; PSB is intended for extra-large documents.

Layers and Photoshop editing capabilities
Preserving layers and Photoshop editing capabilities can make the PDF editable when reopened in Photoshop. It does not mean that every layer, text object, smart object, mask, or effect becomes a separate native object that can be edited in every PDF application. The file can also become substantially larger. For a file that someone only needs to view or print, a PDF without Photoshop editing capabilities is usually the simpler handoff. Keep the PSD/PSB separately when the layered source matters.

Color profile
The Color option embeds a profile to help other software interpret colors more consistently. It cannot make every monitor or printer display the same color. For professional printing, ask the printer or production vendor which color space, profile, and PDF/X standard to use; do not assume a generic print preset matches its requirements.
Preset, compression, and resolution
Choose the preset according to the recipient and purpose, then check the Compression and Output settings rather than treating any preset as universal:
- Screen, web, or email: prioritize a manageable file size while keeping image quality acceptable at the size it will be viewed. If necessary, test the PDF at 100% zoom.
- High-quality print: avoid unnecessary downsampling or aggressive compression. Confirm the effective resolution required by the printer.
- Commercial printing: use the printer’s specification sheet for the required PDF/X standard, color settings, and other production conditions.
- Photoshop-editable handoff: preserve Photoshop editing capabilities when needed, and expect a larger file. Also provide the PSD/PSB if the recipient needs the most complete editable source.
In the Compression panel, higher compression or downsampling can reduce file size but may reduce image quality or resolution. If the PDF is too large, first choose settings that suit its purpose; on a copy, you can also remove unnecessary hidden content or oversized elements. Do not flatten or delete layers from your only master. Re-export from the original if a PDF looks blurry; enlarging an already compressed PDF will not restore lost detail.

Output, PDF/X, and security
The Output settings are relevant to color-managed output and print production. PDF/X choices appear through the Standard and Compatibility controls, but requirements vary by printer and region. Photoshop is not a substitute for a full preflight workflow for jobs involving complex page layout, bleed, trapping, or spot colors; use the production workflow specified by the printer.
The Security panel can apply password and permission settings. Encryption depends on the selected Compatibility setting. Passwords and restrictions may deter casual access, but they are not a guarantee against determined copying. Use restrictions only when justified and test the secured PDF on the recipient’s system.
Export several artboards as a PDF
For an artboard-based Photoshop document, choose File > Export > Artboards To PDF. This is a distinct workflow from saving one document as a Photoshop PDF. In the dialog, you can select artboards, choose whether to include only artboard contents or overlapping areas, include a background, and create either one multi-page PDF or separate PDFs for each artboard. You can also choose ZIP or JPEG encoding, embed the ICC profile, include artboard names, and reverse page order. JPEG quality is adjustable from 0 to 12. Select Run to generate the PDF files. See Adobe’s artboard export instructions for the dialog options.

Photoshop PDF versus a regular PDF
A Photoshop PDF can retain Photoshop-specific editing data when the relevant capabilities are preserved. A more conventional viewing or print PDF is generally intended to be shared, not to reproduce the full Photoshop document structure. Neither option guarantees that every Photoshop feature will remain independently editable in Acrobat or another PDF reader. Photoshop is primarily an image editor; for a complex multi-page publication, a page-layout application such as InDesign is generally a better fit. Acrobat or another PDF editor is useful for later PDF tasks such as combining, signing, or managing files, but Acrobat is not required just to save a Photoshop document as a PDF.
Fix common PDF problems
“Photoshop PDF” is missing
First check that you are looking under File > Save As or File > Save a Copy, not only under Export As. If the format is still unavailable, save a PSD/PSB master and try Save a Copy; confirm the document is saved locally and consider whether its mode, bit depth, dimensions, or a save error is affecting available formats. For an artboard document, use File > Export > Artboards To PDF. Photoshop versions and Save As interfaces differ, so consult Adobe’s current Photoshop desktop help and save-work guidance rather than relying on an old tutorial’s screenshots.
The PDF is too large or looks blurry
A large file may contain high-resolution image data or preserved Photoshop editing information. Choose a suitable preset and compression settings, and avoid retaining editing capabilities if the recipient only needs to view or print the artwork. To address blur, re-export from the original with less aggressive compression or downsampling. Do not expect repeated re-saving of a lossy PDF to improve its quality.

Colors look different
Check whether a profile was embedded and ask the printer about its required profile and color space. Display calibration, printer handling, and how different applications interpret color can also contribute. Embedding a profile supports consistent color management but cannot guarantee identical output on every device.
Layers or artboard order are wrong
Layers are useful for Photoshop editing, not a promise of universal PDF editability. If you need layers, verify the save options and keep the PSD/PSB as the definitive source. For artboards, review the selection and the reverse-page-order option in the Artboards To PDF dialog before choosing Run.
