To start scrapbooking, choose the story you want to preserve, gather the photos and keepsakes that tell it, and build each page around one clear focal photo with a title and a few lines of context. Pick an album that fits your materials and desired page style before buying refills. If preserving the contents for the long term matters, use conservation-appropriate materials and store the finished album flat in a cool, stable place.
1. Decide what story the scrapbook will tell
Choose whose memories the album records and the period, event, or theme it covers. A family year, a trip, a celebration, or a collection of recipes can each give the pages a clear purpose. Decide whether you want the pages in chronological order or grouped by theme; that choice helps determine the album format and the keepsakes to collect.
2. Gather and choose photos and keepsakes
Collect the photographs you may want to use along with paper items that add context, such as ticket stubs, postcards, greeting cards, letters, certificates, recipes, receipts, and brochures. You do not need to include every photo. Choose images and objects that help tell the story, and keep identifying details with them so you can record names, places, and dates accurately.

3. Choose an album and page format
Decide how much freedom you want to design, whether pages need to move, and how many and what size photos or keepsakes you expect to include. Check the album, refill, and page-protector compatibility before buying: page systems are not necessarily interchangeable between brands.

Consider leaf strength as well as size: pages need to support the material you add. The Library of Congress advises keeping the album modest in overall size and weight and notes that an expandable structure, such as a three-ring binder, is an option. For one brand-specific example, Creative Memories lists 12×12, 8×8, and 6.75×10-inch page options in its 2024 guide; these are its stated sizes, not universal standards. Its pages are designed for its own album system, so check compatibility in the Creative Memories page guide.

4. Plan the page before attaching anything
Lay out the photo, title, journaling, background, and any optional accents before fixing them in place. Give the page one clear focal point, usually the strongest or largest photo. Let colors in the image guide your paper choices, and leave enough open space that the photo and words remain easy to see. You can crop or mat a photo if that supports the design, but decoration is optional.
5. Add the context the photos cannot show
A title and a short caption can make a page meaningful to someone viewing it later. Record names, place, date, and what was happening; add why the moment mattered if you want to preserve more of the memory. Colorado 4-H’s educational scrapbooking project asks participants to include journaling on each page or two-page layout, but that is a project requirement, not a rule for every personal scrapbook. Its scrapbooking project guidance treats journaling as a way to tell the story behind the photos.

6. Attach materials with your preservation goal in mind
For a scrapbook intended to last, the Library of Congress recommends acid-free, lignin-free paper materials; polyethylene, polypropylene, or polyester film plastics; and wheat-starch paste or non-adhesive options such as acid- and lignin-free paper or polyethylene photo corners. It advises against rubber bands, self-adhesive tape, paper clips, and staples. Ordinary craft supplies should not be assumed to meet these preservation recommendations. Store the album flat, preferably in a fitted preservation-quality box, away from light, dust, and pests. The Library of Congress recommends a clean, stable, cool environment—room temperature or below—and relatively dry conditions, with about 35% relative humidity as its storage guidance. Avoid attics, basements, radiators, vents, and places where leaks are possible.

For an existing or historic scrapbook, do not treat it like a new project: old adhesives and materials may already be damaging, but the National Archives advises preserving historic scrapbooks as coherent objects. Handle one with clean hands, turn pages carefully, keep it flat in cool, dry conditions, and avoid direct sunlight. Do not attempt repairs with tape or glue if the book is intended for future generations. When copying a tightly bound album, avoid placing it face down on a scanner; use face-up copying and support the book appropriately.
