The reliable way to make a colorful fabric shower curtain is to sew a decorative outer curtain to the dimensions of your shower, then hang a separate waterproof liner behind it. Measure first, account for fabric width and print repeat, and choose either pleats with drapery hooks or top openings that match the liner. Ordinary decorative cotton is not a water barrier.
Start with the job each layer must do
A watercolor floral fabric can supply the color and pattern, but it should be treated as a decorative facing rather than waterproofing. The cited floral-curtain project used a store-bought liner behind the fabric, and Jo-Ann’s construction guide also lists a purchased liner as a supply. Keep that liner in place unless the fabric manufacturer specifically identifies your chosen material as a shower-rated water barrier.

The liner catches spray and hangs closest to the tub or shower. The sewn curtain stays on the room side, where its print is visible and where it can be removed independently if you need to wash, replace, or repaint it. This two-layer arrangement also lets you use a wider decorative panel than a standard ready-made curtain without changing the liner.
Measure the opening before buying fabric
Record the finished width and length
- Measure the horizontal distance from the left to the right end of the rod or track. If the rod is curved, measure along the curve rather than across the shortest straight line.
- Measure from the rod, or from the point where the rings will sit, to the bottom edge you want. A tub installation usually needs the curtain to finish inside the tub; a shower-only installation may use a different drop. Use your actual installation, not a default size.
- Decide how much fullness you want when the curtain is closed. A flat panel can be close to the opening width; pleats require extra fabric that will be consumed in the folds.
- Write down the finished target before cutting. Include the width and length lost in hems, seams, and any pleat take-up.
The Sewing & Craft Alliance’s Making a Shower Curtain guide gives a useful baseline of 72 inches square with twelve grommets or buttonholes across the top. That is a starting dimension, not a rule: the guide itself advises measuring and adjusting for the installation.

Use fabric width and print repeat to estimate yardage

For a colorful watercolor floral, spread the fabric on a clean floor and mark the repeat before ordering. Measure the distance from one complete flower or leaf arrangement to the next. If a seam would cut through a prominent bloom, shift the layout or purchase extra yardage. Pattern matching can consume more fabric than the simple rectangle calculation suggests.

Match your attachment points to the liner’s holes and to the number of rings your rod can support.

Gather materials and prepare the floral fabric
- Watercolor floral fabric by the yard, with enough allowance for seams, hems, pattern matching, and any pleat fullness.
- A separate shower curtain liner sized for the opening.
- Sewing machine, thread, fabric scissors or rotary cutter, ruler, pins or clips, iron, ironing surface, and measuring tape.
- Optional: twelve grommets and a compatible setter if you are following the standard-size example, or the number required by your own liner.
- For the pleated method: drapery hooks and double-hook shower curtain rings.
Prewash and dry the fabric according to its care label before measuring final pieces. Press it flat. This prevents a later shrinkage surprise from changing the drop or pulling the print out of alignment. If the fabric has a directional design, mark the top edge on the wrong side with removable chalk.
Sew a pieced curtain panel
1. Plan the panel layout
With 45- or 54-inch fabric, a 72-inch-wide curtain normally requires joined sections. A center panel with side borders is one approach described in Jo-Ann’s project instructions. Place the most important floral motifs in the center, then use borders to reach the required width. Add a 1/2-inch seam allowance wherever you join pieces, and check that the repeat flows across each seam before cutting all sections.

2. Cut and join the sections
- Cut the center and border pieces to your calculated dimensions, including seam allowances.
- Pin adjacent pieces right sides together, matching the floral repeat at eye level and at the lower edge.
- Sew the seams with the planned 1/2-inch allowance. Press each seam as you go; press it open for a flatter panel or toward a border if that hides the seam better.
- Measure the joined panel again. If the width is short, correct it before hemming rather than trying to recover the difference with the top openings.
3. Finish the raw edges and hems
Finish the side raw edges, then fold and press the side hems. The Jo-Ann sample uses folded side hems and deeper folded hems at the top and bottom. A deeper bottom hem adds weight and helps the curtain hang straight; the exact depth is your design decision, but include it in the length calculation from the beginning.
Press each fold sharply, stitch the side hems, and then sew the top and bottom hems. Keep the top hem wide enough to support buttonholes, grommets, or pleat stitching. Before adding hardware, hang the untrimmed panel temporarily and verify that the bottom lands where you measured.

Add pleats and hooks when you want a tailored top
The exact-title floral project began with 98 inches of fabric width and used twelve pleats to take up the excess. The maker wanted two extra inches at each end. Use those figures as an example of the calculation, not as a required pattern: your opening, fullness, and fabric may call for a different width and pleat count.
- Mark the finished width you need after pleating, including any end allowance you want.
- Divide the excess fabric between the planned pleats. Keep the pleat spacing visually even and place the first and last pleat far enough from the side edges that the curtain does not flare awkwardly.
- Fold each pleat toward the back, press it, and stitch or tack it securely through the top hem.
- Attach one drapery hook to the back of each pleat. Test one hook first with a ring to confirm that the curtain hangs at the intended height.
- Install double-hook rings across the rod. Put the decorative curtain on one hook and the liner on the second, checking that every liner hole hangs at the same interval.
Do not force twelve pleats onto a narrow opening simply because that number appears in one project. Too many folds can make a small bathroom look crowded; too few can leave a wide panel sagging between rings.

Install buttonholes or grommets that match the liner
Buttonholes
Mark the top positions by laying the purchased liner over the finished curtain. Transfer the liner’s openings to the curtain, keeping the marks level and centered in the reinforced top hem. Sew each buttonhole with your machine’s buttonhole function or a dense zigzag, then cut the opening carefully. Test one ring before making all the openings; a hole that is too close to the edge can tear under the curtain’s weight.
Grommets
Use the number and spacing dictated by your liner and rod. The standard-size guidance describes twelve grommets or buttonholes across the top, but your installation may need a different count. Stabilize the top hem with the fabric layers recommended by the grommet manufacturer, mark the centers, cut the holes to the specified diameter, and set each grommet with the correct setter. If the grommet edge distorts the print, shift the layout before cutting rather than trying to hide an off-center hole afterward.

- Attach the liner to the rod or rings first and confirm that it reaches the intended wet-side position.
- Attach the decorative curtain, keeping it outside the tub or shower area so it does not replace the liner’s water-control function.
- Close the curtain and inspect the bottom edge for a level line, pooled fabric, or gaps at the sides.
- Open and close it several times. Look for hooks that twist, grommets that catch, or pleats that pull unevenly.
- Adjust ring spacing or re-mark a top opening if the decorative panel and liner do not travel together.
A painted alternative: stencil a white curtain
If piecing a wide floral panel is not practical, Plaid’s Bright Floral Shower Set project offers a different route: decorate a white fabric shower curtain and bath rug with rose stencils, stencil brushes, and multi-surface paint. This approach avoids joining narrow fabric widths and lets you position color directly on a ready-made panel.
Use a separate liner with the painted curtain as well. The available project information does not establish how the painted surface behaves after washing or prolonged bathroom exposure, so do not promise a particular wash life or water resistance. Follow the paint manufacturer’s curing and cleaning directions, and test the process on a fabric scrap before committing to the curtain.
Troubleshoot the common fit problems
- The curtain is too narrow: Recheck whether seam allowances and pleat take-up were subtracted twice. Add a border panel if the print allows, or remake the top layout with fewer, deeper pleats.
- The pattern looks broken at seams: Unpick the affected seam before hemming and realign the repeat. Large watercolor motifs often need extra fabric for a convincing match.
- The liner and curtain hang at different points: Lay them together again and transfer the liner’s actual openings. Ring count and spacing must serve the liner, not an assumed standard.
- The bottom edge drags: Re-measure from the ring’s hanging point, account for the top hem and hardware, and shorten the bottom hem only after the curtain is hanging straight.
- Water reaches the decorative fabric: Move the liner farther into the tub or shower and keep the outer panel on the dry side. Ordinary decorative cotton should not be relied on as waterproofing.

Whichever route you take, the dependable sequence is the same: measure the installed space, calculate finished dimensions, account for fabric width and print repeat, sew or decorate the outer curtain, and hang a separate liner behind it.
