A reliable 1/4-inch quilting seam places the stitching line 1/4 inch from the raw fabric edge. Measure the guide from the needle, sew a sample with scrap fabric, press it as the project requires, and check the finished result against the pattern. A quarter-inch foot can help, but its label alone does not guarantee accuracy or compatibility.
Set up the machine safely
A quarter-inch piecing foot is an optional aid, not a requirement. Before using one, confirm that it fits your sewing-machine model and follow the machine and foot instructions for the stitch and needle position. Singer advises using straight stitch with the needle centered for its quarter-inch foot, and checking that the needle clears the foot. Turn the handwheel slowly to check clearance before sewing.
For other machine and foot combinations, use the setup specified in the applicable manual. Do not assume that a needle position, foot edge, or throat-plate marking is correct for every machine.

Choose and measure a seam guide
You can guide the fabric with a compatible quarter-inch foot, a machine marking, or a removable guide such as marking tape. A foot offers a fixed edge; a marking or removable guide must be positioned carefully. Whichever method you choose, measure from the needle at the intended stitch position to the guide. The distance should be 1/4 inch.
| Guide method | What to check |
|---|---|
| Quarter-inch foot with guide | Verify machine compatibility, the instructed needle position, and needle clearance. |
| Machine marking or foot edge | Measure from the needle; do not rely on the marking or label alone. |
| Removable seam guide or tape | Position it 1/4 inch from the needle and confirm the measurement before sewing. |
Test the seam before starting the quilt
- Use scrap fabric like the fabric in your project.
- Set up the foot, stitch, needle position, and guide you plan to use.
- Sew a sample seam, keeping the raw fabric edge against the measured guide.
- Press the sample as the project instructions require.
- Measure the seam or finished test unit and compare it with the pattern’s expected dimensions. Adjust the guide or an allowed needle position, then sew and measure another sample if needed.
National Quilters Circle recommends measuring the guide from the needle and testing on scraps before starting a project. Check the sample after pressing: an unpressed seam does not show how the finished unit will measure.

Should you sew a scant 1/4-inch seam?
Some quilters use a scant quarter inch because fabric is taken up as a seam is opened and pressed. It is not a universal adjustment: follow the pattern and use a sample to determine whether a literal or scant quarter inch produces the expected finished dimensions.
Keep the seam consistent
- Align the raw edges before they reach the presser foot.
- Guide the fabric edge consistently along the measured reference.
- Let the machine feed the fabric; do not pull or push it through.
- Recheck your sample if you change the fabric, foot, needle setting, or guide.
If the sample does not match the pattern, correct the guide or permitted machine setting and test again before piecing the quilt.

FAQ
How do I sew a perfect 1/4-inch seam for quilting?
Set a guide 1/4 inch from the needle at the intended stitch position, sew a sample with scrap fabric, press it as the project requires, and compare the measurement with the pattern.
Do I need a quarter-inch foot?
No. A compatible quarter-inch foot can make it easier to guide fabric, but you can also use a measured machine marking or removable seam guide. Test any method on scraps.

- Creative Grids exclusive non-slip grip allows you to easily slide the ruler over the fabric until positioned correctly. Then, when slight pressure is applied, the grip holds the ruler in place, eliminating slipping while you cut.
- Easy to read black and white markings, with cutting slots every 1/2in.
- Whole inch, half inch and quarter inch increments are marked. Additional markings for 1/4in and 3/4in cuts are also included.
- For quick reference, 1-1/2in cuts are highlighted with black stars and 2-1/2in cuts with black squares.
How do I know if my quarter-inch foot is set up correctly?
Check the machine-specific instructions for compatibility, stitch, and needle position. Measure from the needle to the fabric guide, confirm needle clearance, then sew and measure a pressed sample.
What is a scant quarter-inch seam?
It is slightly narrower than a literal quarter inch. Some quilters use it to account for fabric taken up when a seam is opened and pressed, but the pattern and test sample should determine whether it is appropriate.
