To sew by hand, you need four basics: hand-sewing needles, all-purpose polyester thread, fabric scissors, and a needle threader. Start on scrap fabric with a short length of thread, learn the running stitch, then use backstitch for strength and slipstitch or blindstitch for discreet hems. With those techniques, you can hem clothing, mend a small tear, attach a button, or finish an edge without a machine.

Build a beginner hand-sewing kit

A compact kit does not need many tools. Gather:

  • Hand-sewing needles: Choose a sharp size suited to your fabric. A finer needle leaves smaller holes in lightweight cloth; a sturdier needle handles denim or tightly woven fabric.
  • All-purpose polyester thread: It works for most everyday repairs. Match the fabric color when you want the repair to blend in, or use a contrasting color for visible mending.
  • Fabric scissors: Reserve them for fabric and thread so they stay sharp.
  • Needle threader: This is optional, but useful when the eye is small or your thread frays.
  • Thimble: Optional. It protects your fingertip and helps push a needle through dense fabric.

Also prepare good lighting, an uncluttered work surface, and a scrap of similar fabric for practice.

Prepare the needle, thread, and fabric

Choose a manageable thread length

Cut a short length that you can control comfortably. Very long thread tangles and develops knots. If you run out, secure the old thread on the wrong side and start a new one rather than wrestling with an unwieldy strand.

Thread and knot the needle

  1. Cut the thread end cleanly and pass it through the needle eye. A needle threader can guide it through.
  2. Pull the thread through until you have a single working strand, or fold it for a doubled strand if your fabric and repair need extra security.
  3. Tie a small overhand knot at the tail. Keep it compact so it does not pull through the fabric.

Place the fabric flat, with the side that should look clean facing up. Practice on a scrap first. Keep the thread tension even: the fabric should lie flat, never pucker.

Basic hand-sewing stitches

Choose a stitch by the job it must do. Strength, visibility, edge control, and the task itself matter more than the name of the stitch.

Stitch Best use Strength and appearance
Running stitch Practice, basting, gathering, quilting Quick and easy, but the thread is not locked into a strong seam; usually visible
Backstitch Seams and repairs that take strain Strongest of the hand-sewing stitches; forms a continuous line
Whipstitch Binding a raw edge, closing a tear, attaching a patch Controls an edge with diagonal loops; can be visible
Blanket stitch Felt, fleece, and exposed edges Anchored loops finish and stabilize the edge
Slipstitch (ladder stitch) Closing a folded hem or opening Tiny bites make the thread minimally visible
Blindstitch or catchstitch Hand-sewn hems Small garment-side bites create a discreet finish

Running stitch: your first exercise

Bring the needle from the wrong side to the right side, then take it down and back up in a regular in-and-out rhythm. The Sewing & Craft Alliance recommends short, even stitches of about 1/4 inch (6 mm) for close control. You can load several small stitches onto the needle before pulling the thread through, but beginners often find one stitch at a time easier to keep even.

Running stitch is efficient for temporary seams, gathering, quilting, and practice. It is not the best choice for a seam that will be pulled repeatedly because each stitch can shift independently.

Backstitch: the strong seam stitch

Make one small stitch, then bring the needle up a stitch-length ahead. Insert it backward into the end of the previous stitch, bring it up ahead again, and repeat. The overlapping stitches create an almost continuous line. iFixit describes backstitch as the strongest hand-sewing stitch, so use it for a stressed seam, a small tear, or any repair that must withstand pulling.

Whipstitch: control a raw edge

Bring the needle up near the edge, pass it over the raw edge, and take it down on the opposite side. Repeat so each loop crosses the edge at a consistent angle. Whipstitch can bind a fraying edge, close a tear, or hold a patch in place.

Blanket stitch: finish felt and fleece

Anchor the thread at the edge, make a loop over the edge, and pass the needle through that loop before tightening gently. Keep the loops evenly spaced and at the same depth. The repeated anchors prevent an exposed felt or fleece edge from spreading while creating a deliberate decorative finish.

Slipstitch or ladder stitch: close a gap discreetly

Fold the edge inward. Take a tiny horizontal bite in one folded side, then a matching bite in the opposite side. Move along the opening, alternating sides. Pull the thread gently every few stitches so the edges meet without puckering. This is useful for closing a turned hem, lining opening, or gap left after turning a project right-side out.

Blindstitch or catchstitch: hem with minimal visibility

Work from the fold of the hem, taking very small bites in the garment and slightly larger bites in the hem allowance. Alternate sides along the edge. Keep the garment-side stitches small and do not tighten the thread enough to draw the fabric into ridges.

How to hem by hand

  1. Trim loose threads and decide the finished hem depth.
  2. Fold the raw edge to the wrong side and press it flat. A second fold encloses the raw edge on fabrics that fray.
  3. Temporarily secure the fold with pins or a few loose running stitches if it shifts.
  4. Choose slipstitch for the least visible result, or blindstitch/catchstitch when you want a flexible hem.
  5. Work around the hem with consistent spacing and relaxed tension.
  6. On the wrong side, secure the final stitches with a small knot or a few backstitches, then trim the thread.

How to mend a small tear

  1. Inspect the tear and remove only loose, dangling fibers; avoid cutting sound fabric.
  2. Bring the edges together without overlapping them unless the fabric has a missing section.
  3. Use backstitch along the tear for a strong closure. For a fraying edge or a patch, whipstitch can contain the raw edge.
  4. Make the first and last few stitches slightly beyond the visible tear so the repair does not stop at a weak point.
  5. Secure the thread on the wrong side and trim it close.

For a hole under tension, very thin fabric, or damage near a fastener, reinforce the surrounding area with a small patch on the wrong side rather than relying on stitches alone.

Finishing, tension, and common mistakes

  • Puckered fabric: You are pulling the thread too tightly. Ease the last stitch until the fabric lies flat.
  • Uneven line: Mark a temporary guideline or use the fabric weave as a visual guide; shorten your stitches while practicing.
  • Knotted thread: Shorten the working length and let the needle hang occasionally so the thread can untwist.
  • Stitches showing on the outside: Use smaller bites and work from the fold or seam allowance. Slipstitch and blindstitch are designed for discreet finishes.
  • Thread pulling through: Enlarge the starting knot slightly or anchor with two small stitches in the seam allowance.
  • Needle difficult to push: Use a thimble, a sharper or sturdier needle appropriate to the fabric, and good lighting. Never force a bent needle.

Which stitch should you choose?

  • Choose running stitch for temporary work, gathering, quilting, and learning the motion.
  • Choose backstitch when a seam or repair must be strong.
  • Choose whipstitch to bind a raw edge, close a tear, or attach a patch.
  • Choose blanket stitch for exposed felt or fleece edges.
  • Choose slipstitch when you want to close a folded opening with little visible thread.
  • Choose blindstitch or catchstitch for a flexible hem with small visible bites.

These techniques cover the core of how to sew without a machine: prepare the fabric, maintain even tension, select the stitch for the job, and secure the thread on the wrong side when you finish.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I sew by hand without a sewing machine?

Yes. A needle, all-purpose thread, fabric scissors, and basic hand-sewing techniques are enough for hems, small tears, buttons, patches, and finishing details.

How long should hand-sewing thread be?

Use a short, manageable length that does not tangle. Starting with less thread is easier for beginners; secure it and add a new length when necessary.

What is the strongest basic hand stitch?

Backstitch creates a continuous, overlapping seam and is the best basic choice for repairs and seams that take strain.
