For cotton lawn or voile, start with a fresh fine needle, fine thread and a short straight stitch, then adjust using a test seam made from the same fabric and number of layers as your project. Lawn is often soft yet crisp; voile is typically thinner and more sheer. The cloth in front of you—not its name alone—should guide the settings and seam finish.

How lawn and voile differ at the machine
Cotton lawn is generally a fine, high-thread-count fabric with a soft but crisp hand. Voile is commonly very lightweight and semi-sheer, with a more fluid drape. These are general descriptions, not guarantees: fabric weight, weave, finish and fiber content vary by bolt. Voile can also be made with synthetic fibers, so check the label rather than assuming it is cotton. SewGuide’s woven-cotton sewing guide describes lawn and voile; its voile fabric guide notes the fabric’s lightweight, somewhat sheer character and recommends prewashing natural-fiber voile.
As approximate reference figures, SewGuide lists cotton lawn at 70–100 GSM and cotton voile at 50–60 GSM in its 2024 guide. These are that source’s estimates, not universal specifications or a substitute for the fabric seller’s weight information. SewGuide, updated April 22, 2024.

Choose a needle and thread
Needle
Use a fresh, fine needle as a starting point. A sharp or Microtex needle is a reasonable option to try on very fine woven cloth. Guidance varies: one source recommends 60/8 or 70/10 Microtex for voile and 70/10 sharp or HJ for lawn, while its general needle guide gives nearby size 11/75 advice for thin cotton. The exact choice depends on the fabric and machine, so check the manual and test on scraps rather than treating one size as a rule. Thread
Choose fine thread compatible with the cloth and your machine. A finer thread can help avoid a bulky-looking seam or puckering on lawn, but the sources do not establish one universal thread weight or brand. Set the stitch length by testing
For lightweight cotton, begin with a straight stitch around 1.5–2.4 mm. Published guidance includes 1.8–2.5 mm for light cotton and 1.5–2 mm for especially fine cotton, so use these as starting ranges, not fixed settings. - Cut a scrap that matches the project fabric and test with the same number of layers and seam direction.
- Sew a short seam at the starting stitch length and check for puckering, skipped stitches, visible needle holes or fabric being drawn into the needle plate.
- Adjust the stitch length and retest until the seam lies flat and holds securely. If you change the needle or thread, test again.
Do not rely on a single tension number for every lawn or voile. Threads Monthly reports general starting guidance based on manufacturers’ advice, but that is secondary information and cannot replace the manual for your machine model. Prepare and handle the fabric carefully
- Check fiber content and care instructions first. If the fabric is a natural fiber and prewashing suits the garment, it can reduce the risk that later shrinkage will alter the fit. Follow the fabric’s care instructions.
- Cut gently and keep the grain aligned so the garment hangs as intended and any print or pattern lines up. SewGuide’s cotton sewing guide.
- Press cautiously: test on a scrap and follow the care label. There is no single pressing temperature established here for every lawn or voile.
Choose a seam finish for sheerness and fraying
French seams for sheer cloth
A French seam encloses the raw allowances, making it a useful option when a seam might show through sheer or nearly sheer cotton. Test the finish on scraps first: the enclosed layers add bulk, which may matter on very fine fabric or at a curved seam. SewGuide’s woven-cotton sewing guide.
Other finishes and hems
For constructions where a French seam is too bulky or unsuitable, consider serging or binding the raw edge. Cotton cut edges can fray, so finish exposed allowances rather than leaving them raw. For a hem on thin, drapey cotton, hand stitching or a rolled hem are options; select a finish that suits the garment and fabric transparency. SewGuide’s woven-cotton guide.
