To sew plush fabric successfully, first identify its backing, stretch, pile length, and nap. Use a cutting method that protects the pile, secure layers without stretching them, test needle and stitch settings on scraps, and brush any trapped fibers out of the seam after stitching. Short-pile minky and long-pile faux fur need different handling, so there is no single setting that suits every plush fabric.
Identify the plush fabric before you cut
“Plush” describes a surface, not one construction. Minky is commonly a microfiber plush knit; faux fur may have a longer pile over a knit backing. The backing determines whether the fabric stretches, and pile height affects cutting and seam bulk. Check both sides, gently stretch the fabric in each direction, and feel how deep the pile is before choosing a method. The Sewing & Craft Alliance guide to Minkee-like fabrics and the American Sewing Guild’s faux-fur guidance address different types of plush, which is why their recommendations are not interchangeable in every case.

Check the nap and choose its direction
Brush the pile in both directions. One direction will usually feel smoother or look different; that is the nap. Decide which way you want it to lie on the finished project, then mark an arrow on the wrong side of the fabric or on each pattern piece. Keep all pieces oriented consistently. A layout that keeps every piece with the nap may use more yardage than a layout that turns pieces in different directions.
Prepare fabrics consistently
The Sewing & Craft Alliance says polyester microfiber plush does not need preshrinking. If the project combines it with other fabrics that may shrink, prewash those fabrics before cutting so they are prepared consistently.

Cut without damaging the pile
Short-pile minky and microfiber plush
For ordinary microfiber plush, use a rotary cutter or scissors, whichever gives you control over the fabric and pattern. Keep the layers flat and aligned with the nap arrows. Cut one layer at a time if the fabric shifts when stacked.
Long-pile faux fur
Lay faux fur pile-side down and cut from the backing rather than slicing through the visible hairs. Use the tip of sharp scissors to snip the backing, or a craft knife where appropriate, cutting only far enough to separate it. This helps preserve the fur at the cut edge and reduces a blunt, shorn look. Keep pieces oriented in the same nap direction.

Loose fibers can collect around the work area and in the sewing machine. Shake cut pieces outside or clean up as you go, and clear fibers from the bobbin area during longer projects.
Set up the machine and control shifting
Test the needle and stitch on scraps
Needle advice differs among guides and fabric types, so treat sizes as starting points rather than universal rules. For Cuddle® minky, manufacturer Shannon Fabrics recommends a 90/14 stretch needle. The Sewing & Craft Alliance recommends an 80/12 universal needle for many microfiber plush fabrics, with a ballpoint needle if stitches skip or the machine balks. AllPeopleQuilt describes a 90/14 ballpoint or stretch needle and a stitch length of about 3.0–3.5 mm. These are separate recommendations; your fabric, machine, and number of layers matter.

Make a test seam using scraps of the actual fabric and the same number of layers as the project seam. Check that stitches form evenly and the seam does not pucker or wave. If stitches skip, try a ballpoint or stretch needle; if the machine struggles, recheck the needle and test a different setup. Change one setting at a time, and consult the machine manual for needle compatibility.
Secure the layers and feed them gently
Use clips, pins, or basting to prevent the layers from creeping. A walking or even-feed foot can help feed both layers evenly, but it is optional and must be compatible with your machine. Shannon Fabrics also recommends double pinning for Cuddle® minky. Whatever method you choose, do not stretch the fabric to make the edges meet.

Sew slowly and let the feed dogs move the fabric. Do not pull from behind the presser foot or push from in front; either can stretch the backing and leave a distorted seam. If the test seam waves, check first for stretching, add closer layer control, then try adjusting presser-foot pressure or the feeding method one change at a time. Shannon Fabrics recommends lower presser-foot pressure for Cuddle® minky, but the useful setting depends on the machine and material.

Keep long fibers out of the stitching line
Before stitching faux fur, brush or push the pile away from the seam line. After sewing, use a pin or needle to tease any trapped hairs back out along the seam. This helps the pile cover the seam instead of disappearing into it.

Manage seam allowance and bulk
Follow the pattern’s seam allowance where possible. Both the Sewing & Craft Alliance microfiber guidance and American Sewing Guild faux-fur guidance suggest an allowance of at least 1/2 inch in relevant cases: the microfiber guidance says this can help reduce curling when a pattern does not already provide enough, while the faux-fur guidance recommends it for conventional seams. Consider the fabric thickness and project construction rather than adding allowance automatically.
With long-pile faux fur, trimming some pile from the seam allowance can reduce bulk. Avoid cutting into the backing or visible pile beyond the allowance. Finger-press rather than applying unnecessary heat, which can damage synthetic fibers; if a project requires pressing, follow the fabric and pattern guidance and test on scraps first.
