For OLFA rotary cutter blades, the manufacturer does not recommend sharpening. If a blade skips fabric, leaves sections uncut, or needs hard pressure, replace it with one compatible with your cutter. There is no established safe, reliable home-sharpening method in the manufacturer guidance cited here.
How to tell when a rotary cutter blade is dull
Judge the blade by how it cuts, not by how long you have owned it. OLFA says to replace a blade when it no longer cuts effectively, skips threads or larger sections of material, or requires hard pressure. Blade life varies with the material being cut, how often the cutter is used, and the cutting mat; OLFA does not specify a fixed replacement interval. Read OLFA’s rotary blade FAQ.

Continuing to press harder is not a good workaround: OLFA warns that a dull blade requires extra force, which increases injury risk. See OLFA’s cutter safety guidance.
Replace the blade safely
- Identify the cutter. Check its brand and model, blade diameter, and hub or handle design. Do not assume that a blade fits just because its diameter matches.
- Find the matching replacement instructions. Follow the manufacturer’s directions for the specific cutter. For example, OLFA’s RTY-2/DX instructions say to replace the blade with the lock activated and the blade not exposed. See OLFA’s RTY-2/DX product instructions.
- Keep hands clear of the edge. Do not change a blade in the palm of your hand. OLFA’s RTY-2C/YEL instructions also say to cut on a mat, keep fingers away from the blade, and fully use the cover when the cutter is not in use. These instructions are specific to that model, so use your own cutter’s manual for its removal and installation steps. See OLFA’s RTY-2C/YEL guidance.
- Dispose of the old blade carefully. Keep the edge contained and follow local guidance for discarding sharp blades.
- Test the replacement on a cutting mat. Make a controlled cut and confirm it cuts cleanly without excessive pressure before resuming work.
Match the replacement to the cutter
Blade compatibility depends on more than diameter. OLFA lists RB45 and RB45H blades for compatible 45 mm rotary cutters; that does not establish that either fits every 45 mm cutter or every brand. Check OLFA’s RTY-2/DX product details and verify your own model before buying.

Hub designs also differ. Fiskars gives separate replacement directions for Standard cutters, which use a thumb nut, and EasyChange or DuoLoop systems, which use flip-open handles and magnetic hubs. Follow the instructions for the hub actually on your cutter rather than applying another model’s disassembly steps. See Fiskars’ blade-change instructions.

Cut on a suitable cutting mat, and remove pins or other hard objects from the mat before cutting, as OLFA advises in its FAQ. A mat supports safe cutting, but it does not restore a dull blade. If the cutter still skips or needs hard pressure after setup, check that the replacement is installed correctly and is compatible; then consult the model’s instructions.
