“Shaving” a deck can mean two different things: smoothing rough edges on ordinary cards, or altering a card to make a magic gimmick. For simple edge smoothing, rub the squared deck against rough cardboard; this softens roughness but does not precisely shorten cards. Reliable DIY instructions for making a consistent gimmick card are not established here.
First, decide what you mean by “shave”
If a new deck has rough edges, you may want to smooth or condition it for handling. If you want to locate or control a card for a magic effect, you may mean a prepared stripper-style deck. Those are different tasks: smoothing aims to soften edges, while making a gimmick requires a controlled, consistent shape.

How to smooth rough card edges
Roberto Giobbi relays card expert Dave Solomon’s advice: square and grip the deck, then rub its ends and sides back and forth against relatively rough cardboard. Giobbi describes the cardboard’s effect as similar to fine sandpaper. The goal is to smooth roughness, not to cut a card to a target length. Read the Giobbi interview.
- Square the deck and hold it firmly enough that the cards stay aligned.
- Rub the deck’s ends and sides back and forth against a piece of relatively rough cardboard.
- If you want a slight bevel on the sides, Giobbi’s relayed advice is to repeat with the bevel reversed.
- Stop once the edges feel smooth. Giobbi cautions against treating close-up cards as though they generally need special preparation, and recommends stopping before perspiration penetrates the card edges.
Joker and the Thief separately suggests rubbing card edges with your fingers or trousers, and mentions a nail buffer in its guide to breaking in a new deck. These are maker suggestions for conditioning or smoothing; they do not establish that a buffer can shave a card accurately. See the maker’s guide. No measured comparison establishes which approach removes more material or gives more control.

If you mean a magic gimmick card
A short-end stripper deck is a prepared card-magic deck: according to Decksmith, its short ends are tapered, and turning a selected card 180 degrees end-for-end creates a subtle difference that helps locate or control that reversed card. The exact handling and design can vary; Decksmith’s description applies to its own Fine End Stripper product, not necessarily every stripper deck.
Decksmith lists an approximate differential of 0.5 mm ± 0.05 mm for its Fine End Stripper. That is the seller’s specification, not an independently verified measurement or a general DIY target. The available evidence does not establish reliable dimensions or repeatable instructions for shaving a card by hand into a consistent gimmick. A forum search snippet mentions a nail buffer for fine adjustment, but the discussion itself could not be examined, so it is not a dependable basis for a construction method. For a gimmick that needs predictable handling, a prepared deck is the more clearly described option; otherwise, practice only on a spare deck and do not assume a smoothed card will function as a stripper.
