Yes—Au.diSlat can be configured as a custom timber-slat ceiling in a raw finish with acoustic backing. It is not an off-the-shelf acoustic tile, however. Atkar’s system is made to project measurements, profiles, substrates, backing, framing and performance requirements. Before manufacture, obtain confirmation of the exact raw-finish/substrate combination, backing product, panel dimensions, cavity, fire documentation and structural loading for your project.

What a raw-finish Au.diSlat ceiling actually is

Au.diSlat is Atkar Group’s modular linear timber-slat system for walls and ceilings. Individual slats are assembled into panel arrays with concealed fixing, so the finished ceiling reads as a continuous rhythm of timber rather than a grid of conventional acoustic tiles. Panels can be arranged in standard or custom configurations, and Atkar provides project measurements and shop drawings for approval before manufacture.

A “raw finish” describes the appearance selected for the project; it does not by itself identify the timber or board substrate, the slat profile, the open area, or the acoustic result. The current product information lists solid timber and MDF substrates, while the 2022 datasheet lists MDF variants. Because not every finish and substrate necessarily combine, the specification should name the proposed substrate and require Atkar to confirm that the raw option is available with it.

Acoustic backing is fitted behind the slats to absorb sound passing through the open portions of the ceiling. Current documentation calls this Sonus Acoustic Backing (SAB), normally black, with white or grey available on request. Earlier product material calls the backing Integrated Acoustic Backing (IAB). Use the generic term acoustic backing in the design brief, then ask Atkar to identify the current product and colour in the quotation and shop drawings.

Raw finish Listed as an available finish Confirm the compatible substrate, profile and sample before approval.
Acoustic backing Documented as SAB in the current datasheet; earlier material uses IAB Name the backing generically until Atkar confirms the current designation, colour and construction.
Acoustic rating Up to NRC 0.8, with a minimum 90 mm cavity recommended for optimal absorption The figure is an upper published value, not a guarantee for every raw-finish profile. Request the NRC for the selected configuration.
Panel size 600 mm standard width and up to 3600 mm standard length; custom dimensions available Coordinate module breaks, access panels, perimeter details and service penetrations before manufacture.
Panel thickness and mass Varies by configuration Have the design team check the ceiling structure, suspension or battens, and handling requirements.
Fire performance Tested to AS ISO 9705:2003 and stated to comply with AS 5637.1:2015; options up to Group 1 Group 1 certificates apply only to selected profiles and configurations. Obtain the certificate that matches the proposed assembly.

Designing the acoustic result

Understand what “up to NRC 0.8” means

Atkar’s September 2022 datasheet describes “optimal acoustic absorption (up to NRC 0.8).” NRC, or Noise Reduction Coefficient, is a single-number rating used to summarize absorption across a defined test range. “Up to” is essential: the result depends on the slat profile, open area, backing, cavity and other parts of the assembly. A raw finish does not automatically produce NRC 0.8.

For the best chance of approaching the published upper value, the same datasheet recommends a minimum 90 mm air cavity behind the panel. Treat that as a design allowance, not as a substitute for a project-specific test value. Ask Atkar to state the NRC for the exact profile, backing and cavity in the quotation or technical submission, and record the test or assessment basis in the specification.

Coordinate the cavity with the building services

The cavity is the space between the visible slats and the structural soffit or supporting plane. It may also contain lighting, air-distribution components, detectors, speakers and access provisions. A shallow cavity created by services or structure can change the acoustic performance from the value used in early design. Reserve the required depth first, then check clashes and maintenance access rather than allowing ducts or cable trays to consume the acoustic zone after the ceiling is ordered.

Choose the backing colour deliberately

Black is the stated standard colour for the current acoustic backing, with white or grey available on request. Black generally produces a darker visual void between raw slats; a lighter backing can make the ceiling read more uniformly filled. The colour decision should be made with a physical sample under the project’s lighting, because reflected light and viewing distance affect the perceived contrast. Include the selected colour in the shop-drawing approval.

Set the visual module before you set the price

Start with the 600 mm module

The standard panel width is 600 mm, and standard panel length extends to 3600 mm. Those dimensions are starting points, not a requirement to use a repetitive 600-by-3600 mm grid. Custom dimensions are available, but every change can affect joints, perimeter trims, slat alignment, handling and the quantity of supporting members.

Resolve perimeter and service conditions

  • Mark the primary viewing axis and decide whether slats run with the room, across it or continuously through adjoining spaces.
  • Place panel joints where they will be least visible and where access can be provided without breaking the visual rhythm.
  • Coordinate light fittings, sprinklers, grilles, speakers, detectors and inspection hatches with the slat direction and panel boundaries.
  • Draw the perimeter condition at walls, bulkheads, columns and changes in level; do not leave the first and last slat to be cut on site without an approved detail.
  • Show any seismic, movement or service-zone requirements that affect the support or fixing layout.

Atkar’s concealed-fixing approach is intended to preserve a clean face, but concealment does not eliminate the need for planned access. Ask how panels are removed and reinstated, and identify which panels are designated as service access before the final layout is released.

Specify the substrate and raw finish together

The current product page describes solid timber and MDF substrates; the 2022 datasheet covers MDF variants. That difference in published descriptions is a reason to write a performance-based requirement rather than assuming a default board. Your schedule should state the desired raw appearance, the proposed substrate, the slat profile and any edge or face requirements, followed by a clause requiring Atkar’s written confirmation of compatibility.

Specification decision Why it matters Approval evidence
Substrate Controls available profiles, dimensions, mass and the documented finish options. Manufacturer confirmation naming the substrate and product code.
Raw appearance Samples can reveal grain, colour variation, joint visibility and how the backing reads through the open area. Signed sample or mock-up approval under project lighting.
Slat profile and open area Changes the visual scale, weight and acoustic exposure of the backing. Profile drawing and schedule showing the selected section.
Panel dimensions Affects joints, handling, support spacing and the amount of site cutting. Dimensioned reflected ceiling plan and panel schedule.
Backing Changes absorption, appearance and the terminology used in the submittal. Current backing name, colour and installation detail.

If the project wants the untreated character of a raw finish, say so explicitly and ask Atkar what care, protection or finishing conditions apply during transport and construction. Do not allow a later site-applied coating to be assumed: it may alter the appearance, maintenance regime or tested performance and should be approved as a separate design decision.

Check fire compliance as an assembly

The 2022 datasheet states that Au.diSlat was tested to AS ISO 9705:2003 and complies with AS 5637.1:2015, with options up to Group 1. These statements describe available tested or classified configurations, not a blanket rating for every profile, substrate, raw finish and backing combination. The product page also notes that Group 1 certificates are available only for selected profiles.

For a code submission, request the certificate or report that identifies the exact proposed profile and assembly. Record the substrate, backing, cavity, support arrangement and any finish named in that document. If the certificate does not match the selected raw-finish configuration, treat the discrepancy as unresolved and obtain Atkar’s project advice before approval.

Follow this project workflow

  1. Define the brief. Record the room use, ceiling areas, visual direction, raw appearance, acoustic objective, required fire classification and access needs.
  2. Select a preliminary profile. Choose the slat section, open area, substrate and nominal panel module. Mark this as preliminary until Atkar confirms compatibility.
  3. Reserve the acoustic cavity. Allow at least 90 mm where the design is targeting the datasheet’s optimal absorption guidance, then test the space against structure and services.
  4. Request samples and technical information. Obtain a raw-finish sample, backing-colour options, profile drawings, mass information, fixing details and the current fire documentation.
  5. Prepare the reflected ceiling plan. Show panel joints, perimeter conditions, lights, grilles, sprinklers, detectors, access panels and service zones.
  6. Ask Atkar for a project quotation and shop drawings. Provide measured areas, module intent, backing choice, cavity, substrate and delivery constraints. The shop drawings should identify panel sizes and fixing locations.
  7. Verify structure and loading. Use the confirmed panel mass and support layout to check furring channels, timber battens, suspension points and the supporting ceiling structure.
  8. Approve the complete submittal. Sign off the sample, panel schedule, profile, backing, cavity, fixing method, fire certificate and coordination drawings as one package.
  9. Install with qualified personnel. Follow the manufacturer’s fixing guidance, protect the raw faces, and coordinate the installation sequence with lighting and services.
  10. Close out the ceiling. Keep the approved product data, fire evidence, as-built panel layout and access-panel locations with the building records.

Support and installation requirements

Atkar describes installation on conventional furring channels or timber battens. The support grid must be set out with lighting and services, and the manufacturer’s fixing guidance should govern the final attachment. Installation and removal are specified for qualified personnel. The design team remains responsible for project-specific structural, loading and code decisions in consultation with the manufacturer.

Panel weight is not a minor scheduling detail. Atkar warns that total panel weight affects installation and ceiling-structure design, while thickness and mass vary by configuration. Obtain those values before the supporting grid is finalized. Also confirm how long panels can be handled safely, whether mechanical lifting is needed, and which face-protection measures are required for the raw finish.

Cost, quotation and lead-time expectations

No public price or universal lead time is established for a raw-finish Au.diSlat ceiling. The system is made to measure, so cost changes with profile, substrate, panel dimensions, backing, quantity, support requirements, fire documentation, access details and site conditions. Atkar’s stated commercial route is to request product specifications, samples and a project quotation.

Send a complete information pack with the quotation request. At minimum, include ceiling plans and sections, measured areas, preferred module, raw-finish intent, substrate preference, backing colour, acoustic target, required cavity, services coordination, access requirements, fire classification and site location. A vague request for “raw Au.diSlat with backing” is likely to produce assumptions that later affect price or compliance.

Common specification mistakes and their fixes

Calling NRC 0.8 a guaranteed result

Problem: The upper published value is copied into the schedule without naming the profile or cavity.
Fix: Retain the phrase “up to NRC 0.8,” require the recommended minimum 90 mm cavity where applicable, and request the NRC for the selected configuration.

Treating raw finish as a complete material description

Problem: The finish is selected but the substrate and profile remain undefined.
Fix: Specify raw appearance, substrate, profile, panel size and backing as separate decisions, then obtain written compatibility confirmation.

Using a Group 1 statement without its certificate

Problem: A project assumes every Au.diSlat profile carries the highest available classification.
Fix: Request the certificate for the exact selected profile and assembly; the available Group 1 option is limited to selected profiles.

Allowing services to reduce the cavity

Problem: Ducts, cable trays or structure occupy the space reserved for acoustic absorption.
Fix: Dimension the cavity early, coordinate service routes in the reflected ceiling plan and record any reduced zone in the acoustic assessment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leaving panel joints to the installer

Problem: Unplanned joints interrupt the slat rhythm and may conflict with lights or access panels.
Fix: Approve a dimensioned panel schedule and perimeter details before manufacture.

Ignoring removal and maintenance access

Problem: A concealed fixing system is treated as permanently inaccessible.
Fix: Identify removable panels, service hatches and the reinstatement method in the shop drawings, and keep those locations aligned with building services.

What to put in the final specification

  • Product: Atkar Au.diSlat modular timber slat ceiling system.
  • Application: ceiling panels, with the approved reflected ceiling plan and room locations.
  • Finish: raw, with an approved physical sample and any agreed protection or finishing condition.
  • Substrate: the manufacturer-confirmed solid timber or MDF option and product code.
  • Profile and open area: dimensioned section from the approved Atkar drawing.
  • Backing: current acoustic-backing product name, colour and attachment detail.
  • Acoustic requirement: project-specific NRC to be confirmed by Atkar; do not present NRC 0.8 as universal.
  • Cavity: minimum 90 mm where the design relies on the datasheet’s optimal-absorption guidance, subject to coordination.
  • Dimensions: standard 600 mm width and lengths up to 3600 mm where used, or the approved custom dimensions.
  • Structure: furring channel or timber-batten support designed for the confirmed panel mass and site loads.
  • Fire: certificate or classification matching the selected profile, substrate, backing and finish; identify any Group 1 limitation.
  • Submittals: sample, shop drawings, panel schedule, fixing details, acoustic evidence, fire documentation and installation instructions.
  • Workmanship: installation and removal by qualified personnel in accordance with the manufacturer’s guidance.

Bottom line for an architectural ceiling decision

A custom Au.diSlat ceiling in a raw finish with acoustic backing is a valid specification route when the design team treats it as a coordinated, made-to-measure assembly. The reliable path is to approve the raw substrate and profile first, reserve the acoustic cavity, obtain the configuration-specific NRC and fire evidence, check panel mass against the structure, and release manufacture only after the shop drawings resolve joints, services and access.
