What Mailsafe supplies
The range is aimed at projects where a catalogue mailbox may not fit the architecture or the required capacity. The manufacturer and project listings describe residential, multi-residential, banked and commercial applications, with tailor-made manufacture for unusual dimensions or layouts.
Standard and custom configurations
The Architecture & Design listing describes anodised aluminium construction, four standard size families and powder-coat colour selection. Its published configuration range extends from one to eight boxes high and one to 15 boxes wide. A bank can therefore be arranged as a compact row for a small development or as a larger grid for an apartment building. Treat the published range as a starting point: confirm internal dimensions, clearances, door handing and available combinations on the current supplier drawing.
Custom manufacture is useful when a project has a non-standard masonry opening, an existing plinth, a restricted corridor, unusually large mail, or a requirement to align doors with architectural panels. Ask for a dimensioned drawing rather than relying on a product photograph.
Where the systems are used
- Single dwellings: one box, often freestanding or surface mounted, with a finish selected to suit the entry.
- Townhouse and strata projects: a bank sized to the number of residences, with clear numbering and a practical collection route.
- Apartment developments: multi-column banks, optional parcel provision, and access arrangements for residents, building managers and postal staff.

Compare a project by capacity, access and installation
Before choosing a model, write down the physical and operational constraints. A visually attractive bank can still fail if the wall is too shallow, doors open into a circulation path, or the compartments do not accept the intended mail.

Mounting choices and front or rear access
Surface-mounted banks
A surface-mounted bank is fixed to a prepared wall or frame. It is generally the simplest option when the building is complete or when the mailbox must remain accessible for future replacement. Confirm the substrate, fixing type, edge distances, weather protection and the space needed to open every door.
Freestanding units
Freestanding mailboxes can sit on a dedicated base or post near an entrance. Set the location so postal staff can approach safely and residents can collect mail without blocking vehicles, pedestrians or accessible routes. The base, anchoring and any canopy or lighting should be shown on the site plan.
Brick- or block-wall installations
Built-in banks require the opening, lintel, cavity, waterproofing and finished-face dimensions to be coordinated before masonry starts. Request the mailbox manufacturer’s outside dimensions and installation tolerances; do not size the opening from the nominal number of boxes alone. Allow for render, tile, cladding or paint build-up if the surrounding wall will be finished after installation.

Front opening suits installations where residents and postal staff use the same side. Rear opening can keep resident collection inside a foyer or secure courtyard while postal delivery occurs from an external path. A two-sided arrangement needs a clear plan for locks, hinges, door swings, lighting and maintenance access. The brochure describes front/rear opening as an available option, but the exact arrangement must be confirmed for the selected model.

Security, weather protection and optional components
Security is more than adding a lock. Specify who needs a key, whether a building manager requires a master-keyed system, and how the aperture is protected from fishing, rain and wind-driven debris. The listing and brochure identify several optional components:
- Keyed locks: individual resident locks, with master-key requirements discussed at order stage.
- Security sills: a sill detail intended to make unauthorised retrieval more difficult.
- Aperture flaps: covers that can help protect the opening and contents from weather and tampering.
- Parcel shelves: a dedicated shelf option where the design calls for larger deliveries; confirm its dimensions and load limitations.
- Newspaper tubes: separate delivery space where newspapers or long items should not be forced through the main aperture.
- Intercom or light panels: panels that integrate communications or illumination with the bank.
The Architecture & Design listing says a flat internal floor reduces the chance of delivered mail catching on internal protrusions. That is a product claim, not an independent performance test; inspect the current internal design and ask how it suits the mail types expected at the property.
Product families and Australia Post considerations
HELP Enterprises describes several families. MSF is presented as its standard A4 range and Compact MSF as a related compact option. APR is described as a premium A4 range intended to provide higher security, while Series 7 is another family in the brochure material. These descriptions are supplier characterisations, so compare the actual drawings, aperture, lock and finish rather than choosing on the family name alone.

HELP says MSF and APR meet Australia Post design requirements, while the brochure also contains model-specific distinctions, including a “Not Australia Post approved” designation. Do not transfer an approval statement from one family or configuration to another. Ask the supplier to identify the exact model, aperture, lock, orientation and installation covered by any Australia Post-related statement, and keep that confirmation with the project records.

How AS 4253:2019 fits into a specification
Standards Australia’s AS 4253:2019 scope states: “This Standard specifies requirements for the design, construction and performance of mailboxes in both commercial and residential applications.” The standard is a reference point for design and performance requirements; citing it does not prove that every Mailsafe product, modification or installation conforms.
For a project specification, identify the edition being used, check whether a newer edition or authority requirement applies, and request model-specific compliance information from the supplier. Also check planning, accessibility, fire and strata requirements that may affect location and access. Keep the compliance question separate from aesthetic choices such as colour or numbering.

Confirm the current colour schedule, gloss level, texture, batch expectations and any minimum quantities before signing off a sample.

A colour that appears correct on a screen can look different beside a warm masonry tone or in full sun. Approve a physical sample where the bank is a prominent part of the entry. Include the finish code and orientation in the purchase order so replacements can be matched later.

Step-by-step specification for an apartment or commercial project
- Count users and delivery points. List every dwelling, tenancy, office or shared service that requires a compartment. Decide whether a separate parcel shelf or parcel arrangement is needed.
- Measure the site. Record the available wall, recess, plinth and circulation dimensions, including finished surfaces and required clearances. Photograph services and structural constraints.
- Choose the access pattern. Decide between front opening, rear opening or a two-sided bank. Map postal delivery and resident collection routes separately.
- Select the mounting method. Mark whether the bank is surface mounted, freestanding or built into brick/block work. Assign responsibility for the base, anchors, lintel, flashing and waterproofing.
- Set the security schedule. Specify individual locks, master-key needs, security sills, aperture flaps and manager access. State who receives keys and how replacements will be handled.
- Choose the family and dimensions. Compare MSF, Compact MSF, APR or Series 7 against the required mail size, number of compartments and available depth. Use a dimensioned drawing for custom work.
- Resolve postal status. Ask for written, model-specific Australia Post design or approval information and record any “not approved” designation before procurement.
- Approve finish and accessories. Select anodised or powder-coated aluminium, colour, numbering, newspaper tubes, parcel shelf and intercom or light panels. Approve a sample if appearance is critical.
- Coordinate manufacture and installation. Obtain the current quote, lead time, delivery method, shop drawings, installation instructions and warranty or replacement process. Confirm these commercial terms directly because they are not established in the published material.
- Inspect at handover. Check every door, lock, key, flap, shelf, label and fixing. Verify that doors open without striking adjacent construction and that postal and resident routes remain clear.
Common specification mistakes and fixes
Ordering by box count alone
Two banks with the same number of compartments can have different heights, widths, depths and access arrangements. Fix this by approving a dimensioned elevation and plan that show the finished opening and door swings.
Assuming every model is postal-approved
Supplier pages use Australia Post-related language, but the brochure also identifies a model as not approved. Fix the ambiguity with written confirmation for the exact variant and retain it in the compliance file.
Leaving the wall opening to the installer
A masonry or cladding opening made from a rough product image can be too small, too large or poorly weathered. Issue the manufacturer’s current drawing before the lintel, frame or cladding is fabricated.
Ignoring manager access
Individual resident keys do not automatically provide a practical way to service a bank. Decide early whether a master key, controlled key register or another management arrangement is required.
Choosing colour without a sample
Printed and digital swatches vary, and adjacent painted or masonry surfaces change the perceived colour. Approve a physical sample and record the finish code.
Expecting published pages to provide commercial terms
The available material does not establish current prices, lead times, stock, delivery charges or installation responsibility. Request a project quote that itemises those points rather than assuming a standard retail package.
What to request from Mailsafe before ordering

With those documents, an architect, builder or strata manager can compare alternatives on capacity, access, security, finish and compliance instead of selecting a bank on appearance alone.
