Barrierboard is a layered plasterboard acoustic panel system from Soundblock Solutions. It can be fixed directly to a sound existing wall, mounted on furring channels, or used instead of conventional plasterboard in new construction. The right choice depends on the wall you have, the space available, the sound path you are trying to control and the exact tested assembly—not on a single product-wide noise-reduction percentage.
What Barrierboard is
Soundblock describes the product in these terms: “Barrierboard is a composite panel comprising two layers of plasterboard with an acoustic isolation layer sandwiched between them.” The isolation layer separates the rigid plasterboard skins so the finished lining can impede airborne sound more effectively than an ordinary single layer of plasterboard.

1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe precise build-up is configuration-dependent. A 2011 Architecture & Design article described two sheets of different thickness separated by acoustic polyester, while current technical material shows complete assemblies that also include studs, insulation and additional plasterboard. For a specification, use the datasheet for the selected system rather than assuming every Barrierboard panel has identical layers or thicknesses.
Barrierboard is a wall assembly component, not a guarantee that an arbitrary room will become silent. Sound can bypass a lining through ceilings, floors, party walls, ducts, doors, windows, electrical penetrations and structural junctions. The existing wall and the installation details therefore matter as much as the panel itself.

Three ways to use the system
Soundblock’s wall guidance describes three principal approaches. They solve different practical problems and consume different amounts of room depth.
| Approach | Manufacturer guidance | When it is considered | Critical checks |
|---|---|---|---|
| Direct fixing to an existing wall | Approximately 32 mm depth loss | Retrofit where the existing wall is structurally sound and preserving floor area is important | Wall condition, flatness, perimeter sealing and hidden flanking paths |
| Fixing over furring channels | Approximately 60–64 mm depth loss | Retrofit where a separated support layer or service cavity is useful | Channel layout, cavity details, fixing locations and the selected tested assembly |
| Replacing standard plasterboard in new construction | Depth depends on the complete stud, insulation and lining specification | New partitions or walls being designed from the outset | Stud type, insulation, board layers, fire requirements and the applicable laboratory test |
The 32 mm and 60–64 mm figures are guidance for the described approaches, not universal dimensions for every project. Confirm the thickness of the specific board, channels, adhesive, sealant and finish before setting out doors, skirtings, electrical boxes or cabinetry.
Direct fixing over an existing wall
This is the least space-hungry retrofit option. It assumes the substrate is sound enough to carry the new lining and that defects, loose finishes and moisture problems have been dealt with first. A direct lining can improve the wall’s airborne-sound performance, but it cannot repair a major leak around a door, a shared ceiling void or a poorly sealed service penetration.
Furring-channel installation
Channels create a deeper build-up and can provide a more separated support arrangement. That extra depth may help accommodate services or correct an uneven wall, but it also reduces room size and changes junction details at floors, ceilings and adjacent walls. The channel layout must match the system instructions; substituting a different spacing or fixing method can invalidate the relevance of a published test.

New construction
In a new wall, Barrierboard can replace a standard plasterboard lining within a designed stud-and-insulation assembly. This is the best point to coordinate acoustic, fire, structural and services requirements because the whole wall can be selected as one tested build-up. A product description alone is not a substitute for the fire and acoustic documentation required for the project.
How to read the published acoustic ratings
Sound insulation ratings belong to named wall assemblies. They do not establish one universal “percentage of noise blocked” for every Barrierboard installation. The result heard in a building also depends on the original construction, workmanship, perimeter leaks and flanking transmission.

| Documented assembly | Published result | What the document identifies | How to use it |
|---|---|---|---|
| BB1S single-stud system | Rw + Ctr 47 | Marked “Assessed from Data”; includes a CSIRO test note | Use only when the proposed wall matches the named system closely enough for the assessment to apply |
| BBM 2 Barrierboard/masonry/plasterboard configuration | Rw 60; Ctr −7 | Independent testing at National Acoustics Laboratories, report ATF 1165 | Treat as evidence for that masonry configuration, not as a blanket Barrierboard product rating |
Rw is a weighted sound-reduction index, while Ctr is a spectrum adaptation term intended to account for noise with stronger low-frequency content, such as road traffic. The combined notation Rw + Ctr is therefore a rating for the tested construction under the stated assessment method. It is not a room-by-room prediction of the decibel level a resident will experience.
The BB1S value is specifically labelled as assessed from data, so it should not be presented as a new independent laboratory result for every installation. The BBM 2 sheet names report ATF 1165 and National Acoustics Laboratories, but that independent test still applies to the configuration described on the sheet. Ask for the complete test or assessment document when a contract, regulation or dispute depends on the number.

Why a high laboratory rating may not match a room
A wall can be well insulated in a laboratory and still perform poorly in a building if sound finds another route. Common bypasses include:
- Gaps at the floor, ceiling or side walls.
- Back-to-back sockets, plumbing penetrations and unsealed cable routes.
- Lightweight ceilings or floors connected to both rooms.
- Doors, glazing and ventilation openings that are weaker than the wall.
- Studs, joists or masonry paths that transmit vibration around the new lining.
- Existing cracks, loose boards or unsealed junctions in the original wall.
For that reason, a claim such as “blocks 90 percent of noise” is not a responsible specification unless it identifies a particular test method, frequency range, source and assembly. The historical 2011 article repeated a percentage-reduction claim without a test protocol or study that would make it a general expectation.
Installation details that affect the result
Soundblock’s installation guidance treats workmanship as part of the acoustic system. The following sequence captures the practical controls that should be written into the installation scope.
- Inspect and prepare the substrate. Confirm that the existing wall is structurally sound, remove loose material and correct defects that could prevent continuous contact or reliable fixing. Check for moisture and identify penetrations before covering them.
- Plan the perimeter. The guidance calls for Barriseal tape at the floor for acoustic sealing. Coordinate the floor, ceiling and side-wall junctions before panels are lifted into place.
- Set panels vertically. The instructions specify vertical panel orientation. Set out joints and openings so the finished lining can be sealed continuously rather than leaving awkward breaks at corners or services.
- Leave and seal the edge gap. Maintain perimeter gaps of 2–3 mm and seal them with acoustic sealant as directed. A visible gap that remains unsealed is an air path and can undermine the intended isolation.
- Use the specified adhesive and screws. Fix panels with the appropriate screws and adhesive for the selected system. Do not improvise fastener lengths or spacing without checking the applicable instructions.
- Avoid the acoustic plugs. The guidance warns against driving screws through built-in acoustic plugs. Penetrating those elements can create rigid bridges or damage the isolation detail.
- Finish the surface. Once the joints and perimeter are correctly treated, finish with standard plastering and painting procedures compatible with the board system.
Large projects, party-wall work and jobs where building-code compliance is critical warrant professional installation. A competent installer should be able to show how the proposed details correspond to the selected system sheet and how junctions, services and fire-stopping will be treated.

Fire, code and documentation checks
Soundblock’s technical-document hub lists installation instructions, Barrierboard system sheets, performance comparisons and fire-test documents. Those documents should be read as a set. An acoustic rating does not automatically prove a fire rating, and a fire-tested wall may depend on exact board types, stud dimensions, insulation, fasteners, joint treatment and penetrations.
Before approval, ask the designer or installer to identify:
- The exact Barrierboard system designation and current datasheet.
- The complete stud, masonry, insulation and plasterboard build-up.
- The acoustic test or assessment that corresponds to that build-up.
- Any fire-resistance or building-code report required in the project’s jurisdiction.
- How electrical, plumbing, ventilation and inspection openings will be sealed.
- Whether the proposed perimeter products and fixings are compatible with the system instructions.
Where a wall separates dwellings, obtain professional advice on the applicable code and certification route rather than relying on a marketing description or a rating copied from a different assembly.
How to assess an existing wall before choosing an approach
1. Identify the existing construction
Record whether the wall is masonry, single-stud, double-stud, framed with a cavity, or a mixed construction. Note board layers, insulation, wall thickness and the location of studs or battens. If the construction is uncertain, open a small inspection area or obtain a qualified survey instead of selecting a system by appearance alone.

2. Find the weakest sound paths
Listen at corners, skirtings, ceiling lines, sockets, pipes and doors while the adjoining room is occupied. Look for visible cracks and unsealed penetrations. If noise is strongest through the ceiling or floor, adding a wall lining alone may deliver less benefit than treating the complete transmission path.
3. Set the space and junction constraints
Measure the available depth at doors, windows, stairs, skirtings and built-in furniture. Compare the approximately 32 mm direct-fix guidance with the 60–64 mm channel guidance, then include finishes and junction trims in the drawing. Check that the new lining will not obstruct required clearances or services.

Separate speech privacy, music, mechanical plant, traffic and impact noise. Low-frequency sources are often harder to control and are reflected in the Ctr term used with some ratings. A specifier should state the source and the desired performance, not just request “soundproofing.”
What a buyer should verify before ordering
- Current product definition: confirm the layers, board thicknesses and accessories in the current system sheet.
- Assembly match: verify that the wall in the quotation matches the wall in the cited acoustic test or assessment.
- Space allowance: approve the finished depth, including channels, adhesive, sealant and surface finish.
- Perimeter treatment: specify the floor tape, 2–3 mm edge gaps and acoustic sealant detail.
- Fixing method: confirm screw type, adhesive, spacing and the prohibition on fixing through acoustic plugs.
- Flanking control: require a plan for ceilings, floors, side walls, doors, sockets and service penetrations.
- Fire and code evidence: obtain the relevant fire-test and compliance documents for the actual assembly.
- Installation responsibility: establish who will inspect the substrate, seal junctions and certify the completed work.
What the available product information does not establish
The published material does not provide a current universal price, stock position, delivery term, marketplace listing, or a territory-wide supplier promise. The 2011 Architecture & Design story is useful for understanding the product’s original news context, but its historical references should not be treated as proof of current availability, pricing or service coverage.
No particular acoustic-sealant brand or named marketplace product has been confirmed as compatible. The practical requirement is the category and location—an acoustic sealant at the specified perimeter gaps—followed by confirmation from the current system instructions and installer.
Bottom line for a retrofit or new wall
Barrierboard is best specified as part of a complete, documented wall assembly. Choose direct fixing when minimum depth is decisive and the existing wall is sound; consider furring channels when the project can accept a deeper separated lining; and design the full stud-and-insulation build-up in new construction. Use the BB1S and BBM 2 figures only for the assemblies they describe, seal every perimeter and service path, and verify the applicable acoustic and fire documents before work begins.
