Autoflo’s bespoke service can adapt a standard electronic tap or develop a new fixture for a particular architectural, commercial or healthcare project. A “custom” brief may involve only a finish or feature, or it may require new electronics, a different power arrangement, a changed form factor and a newly engineered body. For an existing installation, Autoflo presents the Wave ON/OFF Wall Sensor Lead Free as a retrofit-oriented module, but suitability still depends on the installed tap, wiring, valve arrangement, dimensions and project requirements.

“Custom” is not a single product category. It describes the amount of change required from a standard sensor tap. Defining that change at the start prevents a finish request from being treated like a full engineering project, or a retrofit module from being assumed to fit every older installation.

Adapting a standard product
The smallest intervention can be a visual or functional modification to an existing model. Autoflo says standard models can receive specialty finishes and gives matte black, coloured lighting and rose-gold finishes as examples. These examples show the type of option the company discusses; they do not establish that every finish, colour or lighting combination is available for every model or in every quantity.
A feature change may also be part of the brief. Autoflo describes integrating power supplies, form factors and features according to project or customer requirements. Write down the exact change—such as a finish, light behaviour, sensor position or power method—rather than using “custom” as a general label.
Creating a new fixture
For a genuinely new tap, Autoflo says it can work from a project vision, select or design electronics, and engineer additions or adaptations to a manufacturer’s own product. Its bespoke page states: “We have industrial design and engineering capabilities which can turn your idea into a finished product.” That is a description of the company’s service scope, not a quoted price, guaranteed delivery date or independent certification determination. A new fixture still needs a defined performance brief, engineering review and confirmation of the approvals required in its installation market.

When a standard tap is the better starting point
A standard model gives the design team a known mounting format and a starting set of flow, pressure, temperature and sensor specifications. It also makes it easier to coordinate the basin, services and maintenance access before asking for changes.

Pillar Standard Lead Free
The Pillar Standard Lead Free is a deck-mounted commercial sensor tap for public or private commercial bathrooms, including single- and multi-tap installations. The listed codes are 100-0105LF for battery and 100-0106LF for mains. Autoflo provides Revit, STEP and IGES files for this model, which can help with early basin, counter and services coordination.
The Pillar product page states 5 stars at 6.5 L/min. An indexed data-sheet result for a related item code showed a 6 L/min, 5-star variant. Treat those as model-specific values, not interchangeable specifications: confirm the exact item code and current WELS rating before placing it in a schedule.
Technical information to establish before changing the design
Whether the project is new or existing, the following parameters determine whether a proposed configuration can work. Record them in the brief and have the manufacturer confirm the final combination.
- Mounting and basin geometry: identify wall or deck mounting, the fixing pattern, spout reach, clearance above the basin and the position of service connections.
- Water conditions: document static and operating pressure, hot and cold supplies, temperature, pipe sizes and the location of any tempering valve.
- Power: choose battery or mains operation only after checking access for replacement, cable routes, isolation and the available power pack.
- Sensor behaviour: define the sensing range, activation logic, shut-off behaviour, maximum run time and any required hygiene functions.
- Finish and appearance: specify the surface, colour, lighting and how the tap relates to adjacent hardware. Confirm whether the requested finish is a standard option, a special production run or a new development.
- Service access: leave room to reach the solenoid, sensor electronics, isolating valves, filters, power supply and any tempering equipment without removing finished joinery.
- Documentation: request the current installation sheet, model-specific compliance information and the correct BIM or CAD revision before the design is frozen.
S38 specification details and an important pressure discrepancy
The S38 installation sheet describes a solid-brass, chrome-plated body, a factory-set 120 mm sensor range, a 12 V power pack for the mains version, a latching and soft-closing solenoid, a maximum continuous run time of two minutes and a maximum water temperature of 50°C. It gives an operating pressure range of 50–500 kPa and requires a pressure-limiting valve when pressure at the solenoid exceeds 500 kPa.
The S38 product page gives a different lower pressure bound of 150 kPa while retaining the 500 kPa upper figure. Because those two Autoflo documents do not match, do not silently choose the more convenient number. Use the current model-specific documentation and ask Autoflo to confirm the applicable lower limit for the item being specified.

How to plan a new custom sensor-tap project
- Write the design brief. State the mounting type, basin geometry, number of taps, user environment, desired finish, sensor functions, flow target, water-temperature limits and whether the unit must be battery or mains powered.
- Select a reference model. Use a wall format such as the S38 or a deck format such as the Pillar as a physical and technical baseline. Mark every proposed deviation from that model.
- Coordinate the wet services. Resolve pressure, hot and cold supplies, tempering, isolation points, pipe routes and access panels with the hydraulic designer. Include the 500 kPa pressure-limiting requirement where it applies to the S38 installation sheet.
- Coordinate electrical services. For mains versions, identify the power-pack location, cable route, isolation method and maintenance access. For battery versions, establish how the battery compartment will be reached after the wall or counter is complete.
- Review sensor and control behaviour. Define activation distance, run-time limits, shut-off response and any required flushing or other hygiene sequence. Do not assume a feature is included merely because another sensor model has it.
- Request engineering confirmation. Ask Autoflo to confirm the proposed electronics, water-control components, materials, finish, dimensions, power supply and approvals for the exact configuration.
- Freeze coordinated files. Use the current Revit, STEP or IGES file where available, check its revision against the item code and circulate the approved geometry to the basin, joinery, hydraulic and electrical teams.
- Approve a documented sample or drawing. Record the finish, sensor window, spout dimensions, connections and service clearances so that the installed product can be checked against the approved design.
How to assess an Autoflo retrofit
Autoflo describes the Wave ON/OFF Wall Sensor Lead Free as intended to update older infrastructure, including hospital and healthcare facilities where existing sensor functions may be less sophisticated or may lack features such as automatic flushing. The company says its sensors are dimensionally similar to older units and characterises replacement as a “Plug-and-pay operation.” That wording is Autoflo’s description, not a universal fit guarantee.
Retrofit verification sequence
- Identify the installed unit. Photograph the tap, sensor face, wall plate, pipework, valve and power supply. Record every visible model number and measure the mounting plate, fixing centres and finished-wall opening.
- Trace the services. Establish whether the existing installation is battery or mains, the voltage and polarity, cable condition, isolation points, solenoid type, valve arrangement and hot/cold configuration.
- Check operating conditions. Measure or obtain the site pressure and water temperature. Compare them with the proposed module’s current installation requirements rather than relying on the age or appearance of the old tap.
- List required functions. Note the current sensing behaviour, shut-off timing, maximum run, manual override, cleaning mode and any automatic-flush sequence. Autoflo’s retrofit description does not establish that automatic flushing is included in the Wave ON/OFF model.
- Confirm physical compatibility. Send the measured dimensions, photographs and service details to Autoflo and obtain written confirmation of the replacement configuration. The cited product material does not provide a model-by-model legacy compatibility matrix.
- Plan the changeover. Provide isolation, drainage, electrical lockout where applicable, access for the technician and a method to test the tap without exposing users to an unfinished or leaking installation.
- Commission the result. Test activation, shut-off, leak tightness, temperature, flow, sensor alignment and any specified hygiene function. Record the final settings and the installed model code for future maintenance.
Choosing wall or deck mounting
Wall and deck formats create different coordination risks. A wall tap places the fixing, water connections and service access behind or within the wall, so the finished-wall thickness and access panel must be known before lining is closed. The basin must sit at the correct height and distance from the sensor range.
A deck tap concentrates the fixing and connections at the counter or basin. Confirm the counter thickness, hole diameter, underside clearance and the route to the battery compartment or mains cable. Multi-tap commercial bathrooms may also need a consistent sensor height and service strategy across every basin.
Do not select between the S38 and Pillar merely from appearance. Mounting, basin geometry, pressure, flow, power, maintenance access and the required documentation should drive the choice.

Power, water control and serviceability decisions
Battery versus mains
Battery operation can avoid a mains cable at the tap, but the battery compartment must remain reachable and the replacement interval should be part of the maintenance plan. Mains operation requires a suitable power supply, protected cable routing, isolation and a location where the power pack can be serviced. The S38 mains installation sheet identifies a 12 V power pack; confirm whether the proposed custom configuration uses the same arrangement.
Pressure and temperature
Pressure outside the confirmed operating range can prevent reliable activation or damage water-control components. For the S38, the installation sheet requires pressure limitation when pressure at the solenoid exceeds 500 kPa. Water temperature must also remain within the confirmed limit; the S38 sheet specifies 50°C maximum. A tempering valve is shown for hot-and-cold supply arrangements, but the hydraulic design must be checked for the actual building.
Run time and shut-off
The S38 sheet specifies a two-minute maximum continuous run and a latching, soft-closing solenoid. If a project needs a different timeout, delayed shut-off or a special cleaning mode, make that requirement explicit in the custom brief and obtain confirmation before approval.
Finishes, lighting and architectural coordination
Special finishes can make a sensor tap align with a project’s metalwork, joinery or wayfinding palette, but finish selection is also a durability and maintenance decision. Ask how the proposed surface is produced, what cleaning method is allowed and whether the finish applies to every visible component. Autoflo’s examples include matte black, coloured lighting and rose gold; they should be treated as options to verify, not as a catalogue of guaranteed combinations.
Lighting must be specified by colour, location, activation behaviour and power impact. A coloured light around the sensor can be a visual cue, but it should not be assumed to indicate temperature, disinfection status or a fault unless the manufacturer documents that function.

Documentation, approvals and project risk
Autoflo says its bespoke service uses standards-approved electronics and water-control devices, but that statement does not replace project-specific verification. The certifying and compliance requirements depend on the jurisdiction, building use and final configuration. Confirm local plumbing, water-efficiency, accessibility and electrical obligations with the responsible professionals.
Keep the approved product code, drawing revision, installation sheet, finish confirmation, wiring diagram and commissioning record in the maintenance file. Product ratings, model codes, finishes, availability and compatibility can change, so a previously used schedule should not be copied into a new project without checking it against the current documentation.
Autoflo says its products are manufactured in Brunswick, Melbourne, and describes in-house design and engineering and an agile production approach. The company does not publish a lead-time figure in the cited material, so obtain a written production and delivery commitment for the particular project rather than assuming that a custom unit will arrive on a standard-product schedule.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesCommon specification mistakes and how to avoid them
- Calling every finish change a new product: separate cosmetic, feature and engineering changes in the brief.
- Assuming “retrofit” means universal fit: verify the old model, dimensions, wiring, valve and power arrangement.
- Ignoring conflicting pressure data: resolve the S38 page and installation-sheet lower limits with Autoflo.
- Using a related flow rating: tie the Pillar’s 5-star rating to the exact item code; do not substitute the indexed 6 L/min variant without confirmation.
- Closing walls before service access is planned: show isolation valves, power packs, solenoids and battery compartments on the coordinated drawings.
- Assuming a hygiene feature: verify automatic flushing and other behaviours for the exact model; they are not established for the Wave ON/OFF retrofit module by the cited description.
- Freezing outdated CAD: check the revision of Revit, STEP or IGES files against the current product configuration.
A practical decision checklist
Before requesting a quotation or approving a schedule, the design team should be able to answer these questions:
- Is the project a new fixture, an adaptation of a standard model or a replacement in an existing opening?
- Is the tap wall-mounted or deck-mounted, and are the basin clearances and fixing dimensions coordinated?
- What are the confirmed pressure, temperature, flow and tempering conditions?
- Will the unit use batteries or mains power, and can the power source be serviced?
- What sensor range, timeout, shut-off behaviour and hygiene functions are required?
- Which finish, lighting treatment and cleaning method are approved?
- Which current product code, drawing revision and compliance documents apply?
- Has Autoflo confirmed the final configuration, retrofit compatibility or engineering change in writing?
A well-defined brief lets Autoflo distinguish a finish or feature adaptation from a new engineered fixture. For new construction, standard S38 and Pillar formats provide useful reference points. For older installations, the Wave ON/OFF Wall Sensor Lead Free may be a starting point, but the existing tap and services must be verified before anyone treats the replacement as plug-and-play.
