Durra Panel is a compressed-straw wall and ceiling panel that can be incorporated into projects with doors and windows. The manufacturer lists a dedicated “Doors and Windows Tips & Tricks” resource, but the accessible product information does not establish the actual cutting, framing, flashing, sealing or fastening detail. Use the current manufacturer guide and project drawings for those instructions. The published product data is still useful for early specification: panels are nominally 1187 mm wide, available in 50 mm or 58 mm thicknesses, and made to lengths up to 3600 mm.
What Durra Panel is
Durra Panel is a physical wall and ceiling panel made from compressed reclaimed wheat straw. The manufacturer positions it as a panel with thermal, acoustic and fire-resistance properties, while its product range adds several surface finishes for different architectural and performance requirements.

That description does not, by itself, answer how a panel is installed at a door or window. Openings create junctions between the panel, the surrounding frame, the lining or reveal, weatherproofing, fire-stopping and interior finishes. A detail that works for one wall build-up may be wrong for another. The manufacturer’s site identifies a dedicated “Doors and Windows Tips & Tricks” resource, so opening work is a recognised part of the system; however, the accessible page did not provide verifiable instructions for the actual detail.

“Nominal” means the stated design size, not a promise that every delivered sheet will suit a particular reveal without adjustment. Confirm the selected finish, actual tolerance, edge treatment and order length with the supplier before setting out a frame or ordering trims.
What is—and is not—established for door and window openings
The available product information establishes that Durra Panel is intended for wall and ceiling use and that the manufacturer publishes a specific openings resource. It does not establish the following details:

- Required trimmers, lintels, jamb supports or corner reinforcement.
- Reveal depth, lining composition or the relationship between the panel and a window or door frame.
- Fastener type, edge distance, spacing, embedment or allowable fixing loads at an opening.
- How the system handles tapes, membranes, flashing, backer rods, sealants or sill drainage.
- How a cut edge is resealed or finished for the selected face material.
- Fire-stopping, acoustic-sealing and moisture-control requirements for the complete wall assembly.
Do not infer those instructions from the panel’s dimensions or from a generic straw-panel method. Obtain the current Durra Panel opening guide from the manufacturer or supplier and coordinate it with the project’s structural, weatherproofing, fire and acoustic documents.
A safe workflow for specifying panels around openings
- Define the complete wall build-up. Record the panel thickness, exterior and interior layers, cavity or service zone, membrane locations, frame type and finish. A 50 mm panel with one finish is not automatically equivalent to a 58 mm panel with another.
- Request the current doors-and-windows detail. Ask for the manufacturer’s latest detail for the exact panel and finish. Request sections through the head, jamb and sill, plus any corner or threshold detail that applies to the project.
- Match the detail to the approved frame. Check the window or door manufacturer’s required support, fixing zones, drainage path, sill slope and minimum clearances. Resolve conflicts in drawings before cutting panels.
- Confirm compliance requirements. Have the design team check fire rating, weather resistance, condensation control, acoustic targets and structural loads for the assembled wall. A panel property is not a rating for the whole opening.
- Plan the set-out from actual dimensions. Use the frame’s ordered size, installation tolerance and the panel’s confirmed delivered dimensions. Do not assume that the nominal 1187 mm width can be used as an exact module.
- Approve a sample or mock-up where appearance matters. Hardboard, cement sheet, plywood, timber veneer, Colorbond and acoustic faces produce different edges and junctions. A mock-up can reveal how the selected finish meets a reveal, architrave or sill before production.
- Order lengths with handling in mind. The EPD describes made-to-order lengths from 1.2 m to a suggested maximum of 3.6 m. Confirm transport, lifting, storage and any site cutting limits with the supplier.
- Record the approved installation revision. Product instructions and finish options can change. Keep the guide, shop drawings and supplier confirmations with the construction documents used by the installer.
Choosing a finish for a door or window wall
The finish affects appearance and may change the relevant fire, acoustic, impact and moisture evidence. The manufacturer lists the following options and claims:

The NRC 0.13 value in the directory describes the listed base panel, whereas the manufacturer’s NRC 0.49 statement concerns an acoustic pattern finish. Treat them as different product configurations, not as a range for one unchanged panel.

Thermal performance
The EPD’s declared 50 mm product unit has an R-value of 0.62 m² W/K and a K-value of 0.081 W/mK. Those are material or declared-unit figures, not the U-value of a finished wall containing framing, joints, membranes, windows and doors. The wall designer must calculate the complete assembly and account for thermal bridges around the opening.

Sound absorption
An NRC of 0.13 indicates the listed base panel’s sound-absorption result under the stated product listing. It does not predict the sound insulation of a wall or the privacy performance of a door or window. For reverberation control, compare the selected acoustic finish, backing, cavity and room layout. For airborne sound separation, obtain the tested rating of the entire partition.
Fire performance
Fire claims must be tied to a specific finish and tested assembly. The manufacturer’s Group 2 statement for cement sheet and its fire- and moisture-resistance description for Colorbond should be verified against current certificates and the project’s code requirements. Neither statement should be expanded into a fire rating for every Durra Panel wall or opening.

Environmental and declared-unit information
The Ortech Industries EPD, published by EPD Australasia in 2024, declares a 1 m², nominal 50 mm product unit. Its figures should be quoted with that scope:
- Declared mass: 18.5 kg/m².
- R-value: 0.62 m² W/K.
- K-value: 0.081 W/mK.
- Point load: 5.8 kN.
- Embodied energy: 12.6 MJ/m².
- The EPD overview reports the product as 99.9% VOC-free and provides a VOC emission rate under its declared test data. Treat this as EPD-specific evidence, not a blanket indoor-air guarantee for every finish, adhesive or coating.
- The EPD states that Durra Panel stores carbon in buildings for more than 70 years. This is a manufacturer-declared EPD statement, not independent proof of a particular building’s service life.
The product page says the core extrusion process uses no water, gas, additives, glues or chemical binders. Separately, the EPD component table reports PVA glue in the declared product. When environmental or material-content claims matter, use the current product documentation and EPD together rather than treating the process description as a component-by-component declaration for every configuration.

Questions to put to the supplier before ordering
- Which current opening detail applies to the chosen panel thickness and finish?
- What are the permitted cutting tools, edge treatments and resealing products?
- What support and fixing schedule is required at jambs, heads, sills and corners?
- How does the detail connect to the window or door manufacturer’s flashing and drainage system?
- Which fire, acoustic, moisture and structural reports cover the proposed assembly?
- Are the quoted dimensions actual, nominal or subject to a manufacturing tolerance?
- What lengths are available, and how should panels be transported, stored and lifted?
- Are samples available for the face finish and any acoustic pattern?
- Which documents will be current at the time of installation, and how are revisions identified?
Reported applications and sourcing context
The manufacturer’s portfolio shows reported use in houses, schools, sports venues, studios, convention centres and data centres, including examples identified as ECHO.1: Hawthorn Passive Homes and Woodleigh School, The Futures Centre. These examples demonstrate reported application contexts; they are not independent comparative tests of performance at doors or windows.
Architecture & Design lists supplier-enquiry and sample actions and identifies a Carrum Downs, Victoria office. The manufacturer also provides direct contact and specification resources. Availability, lead times, finish ranges and installation documents can change, so confirm them for the project and region before committing to a schedule.
Bottom line
Durra Panel’s published envelope is clear enough for early design: nominally 1187 mm wide, 50 mm or 58 mm thick, and available up to about 3600 mm long, with declared thermal and mass figures that depend on the product configuration. Around a door or window, however, the decisive information is the current manufacturer detail for the exact wall, frame and finish. Do not improvise the opening, sealing or fastening sequence from generic panel practice; obtain that detail, check the complete assembly against code and the frame supplier’s requirements, and document the approved revision before installation.
