For a smooth Krylon finish, choose a formula labeled for the furniture’s material, remove failing coatings, clean and dry the piece completely, then build coverage with thin, overlapping passes. Fusion All-In-One is Krylon’s broad furniture option for surfaces including wood, metal, plastic, laminate, wicker and glass, but the label on your exact can controls preparation, spray distance, recoat time and safety directions.

What makes a Krylon furniture finish smooth

Smoothness is decided before the first spray pass. Dust, grease, loose paint, rust, rough edges and glossy coatings can all telegraph through a new finish or prevent it from bonding evenly. Krylon describes proper preparation as “the key to a smooth, professional-looking finish” in its surface-preparation guidance.

The application itself matters just as much. A heavy pass can sag or develop texture; an uneven pass can leave striping and thin spots. Krylon’s furniture guide recommends several light coats, 30–60 seconds between coats, and overlapping each pass by about one third. Start and stop the spray pattern off the furniture so the initial burst and the tapering end do not concentrate paint on one spot.

The result also depends on conditions. The Fusion All-In-One product page lists best results at 55–75°F and below 60% relative humidity. Those are manufacturer specifications, not an independent durability or smoothness test.

Choose the Krylon product before you prepare

Identify the substrate and the appearance you want before buying paint. A product that suits a wood table may not be the right choice for a glossy plastic component, and a chalky or metallic appearance follows a different design goal from a conventional color coat. Krylon says to follow the instructions on the can for the exact product and surface.

Option When it fits What the published guidance establishes Verify on the can
Fusion All-In-One General furniture projects needing a standard painted finish Krylon lists wood, metal, plastic, laminate, wicker, glass and other surfaces; it is marketed for appropriate surfaces without separate primer or sanding. Exact substrate, color, sheen, spray distance, recoat directions and safety information
Chalky Finish Paint A smooth chalky appearance rather than a conventional spray-painted look Krylon’s furniture guide presents it as a separate furniture-finish option. Whether your specific item and existing coating are listed, plus preparation and protective-coat directions
Textured or metallic options A deliberately textured or metallic decorative effect Krylon’s furniture guide mentions textured and metallic choices. Surface compatibility and the application pattern required for the desired effect
Fusion All-In-One Clear Optional protection over a compatible painted surface, especially outdoor wooden furniture Krylon’s FAQ recommends it for durable wooden outdoor furniture and says it provides UV fade protection. The clear product is available in gloss, satin and flat. Compatibility with the color coat, number of coats and the clear product’s label timing

“5X Stronger Adhesion” is a comparison stated by Krylon against its general-purpose paints, not an independent head-to-head finding. Treat it as a product claim and rely on the can’s directions for your project.

Supplies: use only what your piece needs

  • The selected Krylon furniture spray paint and, if appropriate, a compatible clear finish.
  • Fine-grain sandpaper for glossy areas or rough repairs.
  • A wire brush or coarser abrasive for loose paint and rust that must be removed before smoothing.
  • A tack cloth for collecting sanding dust.
  • Painter’s tape for areas that must remain unpainted.
  • Cardboard, a drop cloth or another overspray barrier.
  • A painting mask and adequate ventilation.
  • Scrap material for a test spray.

Not every project needs every item. For example, sound, non-glossy furniture may not need sanding, while a failing metal coating may require more extensive removal before paint can be applied.

Prepare the furniture in the right order

1. Inspect the entire piece

Look for peeling paint, corrosion, dents, scratches, glossy sections, grease and areas that will be handled frequently. Identify each material rather than assuming the whole item is one substrate: a cabinet can combine wood or laminate panels with metal hardware and plastic feet. Choose a product whose label covers the surfaces you will actually spray.

  • Halloween Pumpkin Ceramic Crafts Supplies: A Great painting gift for family, friends, kids, girls, women, student, classmate, teacher. For using in school, travel or used in the home and office.

2. Remove hardware and anything that should stay bare

Take off handles, hinges, knobs, shelf pins and other removable parts. Removing them gives you cleaner edges and prevents paint from binding moving hardware. Set the pieces aside with their screws in a labeled container. Use painter’s tape only for parts that cannot be removed or that must be protected.

3. Clean away dirt and grease

Wipe every paintable surface to remove dust, grime and residue. Cleaning is not finished when the surface looks dry: allow the furniture to dry completely before sanding or spraying. Moisture or cleaner left in seams can interfere with an even coat.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

4. Remove failing material

Scrape or abrade loose paint and old coatings until the edges are sound. On metal, remove loose rust with a wire brush or sandpaper, then smooth the remaining rough area. Do not spray over flaking material and expect the new finish to stabilize it; the old layer remains the weak link.

5. Smooth only where the surface calls for it

Krylon’s general preparation guidance recommends fine-grain sanding on glossy surfaces, followed by tack-cloth cleanup. Sand rough repairs until they transition smoothly into the surrounding surface. Do not present sanding or priming as universal requirements: Fusion All-In-One is marketed as needing neither on appropriate, sound surfaces, while the label still governs a particular substrate.

6. Remove sanding dust

Use a tack cloth after sanding and inspect edges, corners and recesses. Dust hidden in a hinge pocket or panel groove can become a visible bump once coated. If you clean again, let the piece dry fully before moving to the spray area.

Set up a safe, controlled spray area

Work outdoors or in another well-ventilated area, away from ignition sources and objects that must not receive overspray. Lay cardboard or a drop cloth under and behind the furniture. Overspray can travel beyond the apparent spray pattern, so protect floors, walls and nearby items rather than relying on a narrow target area.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Wear the painting mask recommended by Krylon’s furniture guidance and follow all warnings on the can. Keep the piece stable at a height that lets you move your arm in a straight, comfortable sweep. If weather is unsuitable, postpone the job or use a properly ventilated location that meets the product label’s requirements; do not assume a generic indoor room is adequate.

Spray technique for thin, even coverage

1. Shake and test

Krylon’s FAQ says to shake Fusion All-In-One for 1–2 minutes. Then test the spray on scrap material. Confirm the fan, color and flow before approaching the furniture, and use the can’s stated spray distance rather than estimating from a different Krylon product.

2. Plan the passes

Work in manageable sections, keeping the can moving at a steady speed. Point the nozzle slightly beyond the edge, press the tip, sweep across the section, and release only after passing the opposite edge. This off-object start and finish prevents a concentrated spot at either end.

3. Overlap by about one third

Each new pass should cover roughly one third of the previous pass. The overlap evens out the fan pattern and reduces visible stripes without requiring a heavy coat. Keep the can moving; stopping over the surface is a common way to create a run.

4. Build the color with light coats

Apply several light coats instead of trying to hide the original surface in one pass. Krylon’s furniture guide specifies 30–60 seconds between these light coats. Use the label if your product or conditions call for a different interval. Corners, edges and vertical faces often need a change in angle, but keep each change in direction smooth and avoid flooding the edge.

5. Rotate the piece only when the surface is ready

For a chair, table or cabinet, plan the order so you do not touch a freshly sprayed face. Coat one orientation, allow the product-specific interval, then reposition the furniture carefully. If a run appears, resist the urge to chase it with more paint; let the coat dry according to the label, smooth the defect if necessary, and resume with lighter passes.

Drying, handling and full cure are different

For Fusion All-In-One, Krylon’s current product page lists approximately 20 minutes to dry to the touch and one hour to dry to handle. For Fusion All-In-One Clear, the listed times are approximately 20 minutes to touch and two hours to handle. The pages do not state a full-cure time, so do not treat “ready to handle” as permission for heavy use, stacking, washing or exposing the furniture to demanding conditions.

Product Dry to touch Ready to handle Other published specification
Fusion All-In-One color About 20 minutes About 1 hour Best results at 55–75°F and below 60% relative humidity; approximately 25 square feet per 12-ounce can
Fusion All-In-One Clear About 20 minutes About 2 hours Gloss, satin and flat finishes are listed; full-cure time is not stated on the cited product page

These are manufacturer specifications accessed October 13, 2026, not independent comparative measurements. Check your can for any edition-specific change, and extend waiting time when the label or actual conditions require it.

When a clear coat makes sense

A clear coat is optional, not an automatic step for every indoor project. Krylon’s FAQ specifically recommends Fusion All-In-One Clear for durable wooden outdoor furniture and says it offers UV fade protection. The clear product page lists gloss, satin and flat finishes, so choose the sheen deliberately and confirm that the clear is compatible with the color coat.

  • Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.

Apply clear only after the color surface has reached the timing stated by the color product’s label. Follow the clear can for spray distance, recoat interval, number of coats and environmental limits. A clear layer cannot correct dust nibs, runs or poor adhesion underneath; correct the color coat first.

Material-by-material decisions

Wood

Inspect end grain, joints and previously painted edges for raised fibers or flaking material. Smooth rough areas and remove dust before spraying. Fusion All-In-One is listed for wood. For an outdoor wooden piece, decide separately whether the optional clear product and its listed UV-protection claim fit the project.

Metal

Remove loose rust and failing coating with a wire brush or sandpaper, then smooth the transition. Make sure the surface is clean and dry. Fusion All-In-One is listed for metal, but the can remains the authority for the exact metal and any corrosion-related preparation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Plastic

Confirm that the specific plastic and product are compatible before painting. Krylon provides a dedicated plastic spray-paint guide; use it alongside the label for that item. Clean thoroughly, avoid spraying over contamination, and test adhesion and appearance on an inconspicuous area or scrap of the same material.

Laminate

Laminate is listed among Fusion All-In-One’s compatible surfaces. Its smooth face may need the fine-grain sanding recommended for glossy surfaces, followed by tack-cloth cleanup. Do not sand through the laminate; stop when the sheen is uniformly reduced and the surface remains sound.

Wicker

Wicker’s recesses and crossings can hide dust. Clean and dry it completely, then use light passes from more than one direction to reach exposed areas without flooding the weave. Fusion All-In-One lists wicker among its furniture surfaces; follow the can for distance and recoat instructions.

Glass

Glass is listed as a compatible Fusion All-In-One surface. Remove grease and fingerprints, mask edges that must remain clear, and keep coats light so paint does not pool at the boundary. Treat the label’s adhesion and handling directions as decisive for the particular glass item.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Troubleshoot defects without making them worse

Symptom Likely technique or surface issue Correction
Runs or curtains A pass was too heavy, too slow or concentrated at an edge Stop adding paint. Let the coat dry according to the label, smooth the defect, remove dust and resume with lighter, faster passes.
Striped or patchy color Passes did not overlap consistently or coverage was attempted in one heavy coat Use several light coats and overlap each pass by about one third. Keep the can moving at a steady speed.
Rough, dusty texture Overspray settled on the surface, the area was dusty, or the pass was too far away for the product Improve masking and cleanup, check the can’s spray distance, and allow the surface to dry before smoothing and recoating.
Poor adhesion or peeling Grease, moisture, glossy coating or failing old paint remained Remove the weak material, clean and dry completely, sand glossy areas where directed, and retest the selected product on a sound section.
Visible bumps Dust or sanding residue was left in a seam or recess Let the coat dry, smooth the bump, wipe with a tack cloth and protect the spray area better.
Overspray on nearby surfaces The work area was under-protected or the spray pattern extended beyond the target Stop, ventilate as required, protect a larger area with cardboard or a drop cloth, and keep the spray pattern moving off the furniture.

A repeatable project checklist

  1. Identify every furniture material and the desired appearance.
  2. Select a Krylon product whose label covers those surfaces and read all product-specific directions.
  3. Remove hardware and mask or remove parts that should remain unpainted.
  4. Clean the furniture and let it dry completely.
  5. Remove loose paint, rust and failing coatings; smooth rough areas.
  6. Fine-sand glossy surfaces where directed, then remove dust with a tack cloth.
  7. Set up outdoors or in a suitably ventilated space with overspray protection and a painting mask.
  8. Shake Fusion All-In-One for 1–2 minutes when using that product, and test on scrap.
  9. Spray several light coats, starting and ending off the piece, overlapping passes by about one third and waiting 30–60 seconds between coats when following the furniture guide.
  10. Observe the product’s touch and handling times, remembering that handling readiness is not a stated full cure.
  11. Reattach hardware only after the item is dry, and add a compatible clear coat only when its protection and sheen suit the project.

Following this sequence gives the paint a clean, stable surface and gives you control over film thickness—the two conditions most directly tied to an even, smooth-looking result.
