Spring-clean a backyard patio in this order: clear every movable item, inspect the exposed area, choose a method for each material, clean furniture and hardscape separately, rinse as directed, and let everything dry before you put the space back together. A broom, suitable brush, hose, bucket, and surface-appropriate cleaner are enough for most routine jobs; a pressure washer is optional and only belongs on compatible, sturdy surfaces.
The key is not using the strongest spray or harshest chemical. Concrete, pavers, wood decking, composite decking, cushions, and woven furniture have different tolerances. Use the surface or furniture maker’s care instructions whenever they are available, and test a cleaner in an inconspicuous place when its label advises it.

1. Clear the patio before you clean
Move everything that can be moved
Take out chairs, tables, cushions, rugs, planters, toys, grills that are safe to relocate, décor, and storage bins. Set items on a clean, dry area where they will not be splashed by patio cleaner. Removing obstacles exposes the full surface and prevents grit from being trapped under legs or dragged across the finish.
Sweep away loose debris
Use a broom or leaf blower to remove leaves, twigs, cobwebs, and loose soil. Work from the house outward so debris does not collect at the doorway. A dry pass also reveals marks that need attention and prevents you from turning a layer of dirt into muddy slurry when water is added.

Inspect while the surface is visible
Look for cracked concrete, loose or rocking pavers, lifted boards, damaged fasteners, weeds in joints, blocked drainage, and standing water. Note furniture with split frames, loose screws, rust, mildew, torn slings, or frayed woven strands. Cleaning does not repair these conditions. Mark areas that need maintenance, and do not pressure-wash a loose board or paver that could be displaced.

1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf water regularly pools, identify the cause before resetting furniture. Keep drains and channel grates clear, but leave structural repairs, electrical problems, and unstable construction to a qualified professional.
2. Gather tools and set up safely
For a hand-cleaning job, assemble:
- A broom, patio brush, or soft brush selected for the material.
- A garden hose with an adjustable nozzle.
- A bucket and measuring container.
- The cleaner named by the surface or furniture manufacturer.
- Safety glasses and gloves when the product label or equipment instructions call for them.
- Clean cloths or towels for furniture details and a dry place for cushions.
Read the cleaner label before opening the container. Follow its dilution, dwell-time, ventilation, storage, and rinsing instructions. Keep products away from children and animals, and never combine cleaners; mixing can create dangerous reactions. Guidance from CLR Brands’ outdoor-furniture cleaning instructions also calls for choosing a brush or cloth that suits the surface, testing a hidden area, rinsing thoroughly, and allowing the item to dry.

3. Match the method to the patio material
There is no single “patio cleaner” setting that is safe for every surface. Use this as a planning guide, then defer to the care instructions for your specific installation.
| Material or item | Routine approach | Brush and water guidance | Important qualification |
|---|---|---|---|
| Concrete | Sweep, apply a compatible cleaner if needed, scrub, and rinse. | A stiff-bristle push broom can lift embedded soil. A pressure washer may be suitable for sound concrete when used according to its manual. | The concrete example in this manufacturer cleaning guide is an example, not a universal pressure or detergent specification. |
| Concrete or porcelain pavers | Remove loose dirt, prepare cleaner exactly as directed, gently scrub, and rinse. | Do not use wire or steel brushes, which can damage pavers. Decorative pavers may need a gentler method than plain concrete. | Paver-care guidance notes that concrete and porcelain products can have different instructions. |
| Wood decking | Use the wood manufacturer’s approved cleaner and a soft-to-moderate brush; rinse without forcing water into joints. | Aggressive spray can scar fibers, strip a finish, or drive water into vulnerable areas. Use only settings specifically permitted for the deck. | Species, finish, age, and prior coatings change the safe method; check the product documentation before adding cleaner or pressure. |
| Composite decking | Sweep, use the approved cleaner, scrub with a compatible brush, and rinse well. | The cited composite-deck example recommends lower pressure and a wider fan tip than its concrete example. Treat those settings as that guide’s recommendation, not a universal setting. | Follow your board maker’s limits, especially around capped surfaces, fasteners, and warranty requirements. |
| Woven or delicate furniture | Hand-clean with a surface-suitable solution and brush or cloth, then rinse gently. | Avoid pressure washing: the spray can damage woven outdoor furniture. | Outdoor-area guidance specifically warns about this risk. |
4. Clean furniture before returning it
Wash frames and woven pieces gently
Start with the least aggressive method that can do the job. Dampen a small section, apply the correctly prepared cleaner, and work with a brush or cloth that will not scratch, snag, or remove a finish. Reach undersides, joints, feet, and the areas where fabric meets the frame. For woven material, use light pressure and short strokes; forcing a brush through the weave can stretch or break it.
Test and rinse
When the label recommends a spot test, apply the solution to a hidden area first and wait for the stated result before cleaning the visible side. Rinse until no cleaner remains, following the product’s directions for water volume and method. Do not assume that a clear-looking rinse means residue is gone if the label specifies additional rinsing.

Handle cushions and fabrics separately
Check the care tag before washing cushion covers or outdoor textiles. Keep removable covers, foam, and inserts supported so they do not remain folded while wet. Place cleaned pieces where air can circulate, and do not put them back on the furniture until they are fully dry. Damp fabric left in a stack or against a frame can develop odors and may stain surrounding materials.
5. Hand-clean the patio surface
- Pre-wet only when the cleaner allows it. Some products specify a dry surface, while others call for pre-wetting. Follow the label rather than assuming one sequence.
- Mix or apply the cleaner exactly as directed. Measure dilution instead of guessing. Keep the solution in the working area and protect nearby plants or finishes when the label requires it.
- Work in manageable sections. Apply enough solution to keep the section wet for the stated contact time, but do not let it dry on the surface unless the instructions explicitly permit that.
- Scrub with a material-appropriate tool. Use a stiff push broom on sound concrete when appropriate, a gentler brush on decorative pavers, and the deck-maker’s recommended brush on wood or composite boards. Stay away from wire or steel brushes on pavers.
- Rinse in the direction of drainage. Move loosened soil away from the house and toward an approved drainage route. Prevent dirty runoff from flowing onto freshly cleaned furniture, walls, or neighboring property.
- Inspect before repeating. If a mark remains, stop and identify the material and cleaner instructions before applying a stronger solution. Repeated scrubbing or stronger chemicals can damage a finish without solving the underlying problem.
For pavers, Belgard’s instructions emphasize removing furniture and loose dirt first, preparing cleaner according to its maker’s directions, wearing protective glasses and gloves for cleaning solutions, and avoiding wire or steel brushes. Those precautions are especially useful when joints, sealers, or decorative faces are involved.

Decide whether you need one
Routine spring soil usually does not require powered equipment. Hand tools give you more control around joints, edges, furniture, siding, doors, and delicate finishes. If a compatible, sturdy surface has extensive embedded dirt, a pressure washer may save time. The Home Depot’s outdoor-living guidance notes that rental can be an option, so ownership is not a prerequisite.

Prepare the work zone
Remove people, pets, toys, loose décor, and anything that could become a projectile. Close doors and windows near the spray path. Wear the protective equipment specified by the machine and cleaner instructions, and make sure the hose and power connections are arranged to avoid trips.
The CDC states: “When using a pressure washer, always follow the safety instructions included in the owner’s manual.” Its pressure-washer safety page, dated August 26, 2026, explains that the spray can cause serious wounds and throw objects that injure people nearby.
Use conservative technique
Choose the nozzle, pressure, distance, and movement specified for the surface and machine. Begin at the lowest effective setting in a discreet area, keep the wand moving, and avoid concentrating spray on joints, edges, seals, electrical fixtures, or damaged spots. The example guidance for composite decking uses lower pressure and a wider fan tip than for concrete; do not transfer a concrete setting to another material.

Know when to stop
Do not pressure-wash woven or delicate furniture. Do not proceed when the surface maker forbids it, when pavers are loose, when boards are damaged, or when you cannot control runoff. If the spray lifts a coating, exposes aggregate, spreads joint sand, or forces water behind trim, release the trigger immediately and switch to the approved hand method.

Rinse cleaner from the hardscape and furniture exactly as directed. Keep rinse water away from children, pets, food-preparation areas, and surfaces that could be stained by runoff. Walk the patio after rinsing to check for slippery residue, missed sections, disturbed joints, or water trapped beneath mats and furniture feet.
Allow the patio, furniture, cushions, rugs, and treated surfaces to dry completely. Drying time depends on shade, airflow, humidity, and the material. Do not apply a sealer, paint, touch-up coating, or other treatment until the product instructions say the surface is ready and moisture has cleared.
8. Reset the outdoor entertaining area
- Return only furniture that is clean, dry, stable, and free of loose hardware.
- Replace cushions and rugs after confirming their care instructions are satisfied and they are dry throughout.
- Use felt or protective feet where appropriate so freshly cleaned surfaces are not scratched.
- Position planters so drainage does not leave constant puddles or soil stains.
- Keep walkways, doors, drains, and hose routes clear.
- Store cleaners, brushes, and powered equipment securely, away from children and animals.
Finish by taking a slow walk around the space. The patio is ready for spring use when the walking surface is clean and safe, furniture is stable, fabrics are dry, drainage is unobstructed, and every item has been returned without hiding a repair that still needs attention.
