You can skip washing a paintbrush after every session if you are pausing an active project: remove excess paint, then seal the bristles so they are exposed to as little air as possible. This is temporary storage, not a substitute for cleaning when the job is finished. Manufacturer guidance differs on how long a sealed brush may stay ready, so treat each time window as a recommendation—not a guarantee.
For a short break, remove excess paint and seal the brush
Wipe or scrape excess paint back into the can, then wrap the bristles and part of the handle in plastic wrap or seal the brush in a plastic bag. The aim is to limit air exposure and keep paint from drying in the bristles. Sherwin-Williams recommends this approach for no longer than 24 hours in its paint storage guidance.
Benjamin Moore gives a different window in its leftover paint storage guidance: clear plastic wrap for up to two days, or wrapped tools in a refrigerator for up to one week. If you refrigerate a brush, let it return to room temperature before using it. These are that manufacturer’s recommendations, not universal limits; follow the paint label and your brush’s care instructions, and use a shorter pause if the bristles begin to stiffen.

Choose a storage method that fits the pause

When the job is finished, clean for the paint type
Temporary wrapping delays cleanup; it does not replace it. Sherwin-Williams’ brush and roller cleaning instructions distinguish between water-based and oil-based coatings:

- Latex or acrylic water-based paint: clean the brush with soap and water.
- Oil-based or alkyd paint: use mineral spirits or paint thinner, following the solvent and coating labels.
For water-based paint, rinse with the bristles pointing down so water is less likely to enter the ferrule—the metal band that holds the bristles. Dry the brush completely before putting it away.

Benjamin Moore’s brush-cleaning guidance recommends reshaping the bristles and laying the brush flat to dry. Once dry, return it to its original packaging; paper or cardboard can serve as alternatives if you no longer have the packaging. A brush comb can help remove stubborn paint residue.
