Shortlist colours with chips, then test the finalists in the room where they will be used. Paint a properly prepared sample in at least two locations, apply enough coats to hide the surface, view it from morning through evening under the room’s normal lights, and confirm the final sheen before buying project quantities.

Why a colour chip or screen preview is not enough
A colour is seen through its surroundings. Wall texture, the existing substrate, daylight direction, light-bulb colour, trim, flooring, cabinetry and nearby furnishings can all change the way the same formula appears. A small chip is useful for comparing families, undertones and warm-versus-cool variations, but it represents a much smaller area than a painted wall.

Digital visualizers are useful for ideas and for narrowing a long list. They cannot establish an exact match on your wall because screens, camera settings and room lighting vary. Kayla Kratz, Head of Color at BEHR, says, “A physical BEHR Paint color chip is more reliable because it is coated to closely match the real paint color.” Use a physical chip to narrow the field, then make the decision from a real sample in your room.

There is no universal standard for sample size or for how long a swatch must be viewed. The useful test is the one that exposes the conditions your finished paint will face: the actual walls, the actual light and the intended sheen.
Step 1: Narrow the list before opening paint
Start with a small group of related chips
Compare chips side by side rather than evaluating each one in isolation. Look for the family you want first—such as a muted green, warm white or blue-grey—then compare lighter and darker steps within that family. Note undertones that become obvious beside your fixed elements, especially a floor, stone countertop, wood finish or white trim.
Keep the shortlist manageable. Three to five finalists are enough to reveal how the room changes without turning the wall into an unreadable patchwork. If a colour is being considered for several rooms, keep a chip from each finalist and label it; names can be easy to confuse once samples are mixed.

Use fixed finishes as the reference
Hold chips beside the things that will remain: flooring, tile, worktops, built-ins, curtains and trim. A neutral-looking paint can show a pink, yellow, green or blue cast next to a fixed finish. This comparison is more informative than judging the chip against a white sheet of paper alone.
Decide what finish you are likely to use
Colour and sheen are linked visually. Flat or matte surfaces scatter light differently from satin or semi-gloss surfaces, and a darker colour can make sheen differences especially noticeable. You can shortlist by colour first, but record the intended finish before ordering the final quantity so the sample test can match it.
Choose the right sample format
Each format answers a slightly different question. A direct-wall test shows the colour with the wall’s texture and surrounding surfaces. A painted board lets you move one sample through several lighting conditions. A peel-and-stick sample is quick and clean, while a chip is best for the first filter.
| Format | Best use | What it shows well | Limitations to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Liquid paint on the wall | Deciding how the colour behaves on the actual surface | Wall texture, substrate, adjacent colours and real shadows | Requires preparation, application and later covering or repainting; follow that product’s directions and stated use |
| Liquid paint on white foam-core board | Comparing several walls or rooms with one movable sample | Portable colour under different windows and light sources | Does not reproduce the wall’s exact texture or substrate; the board’s white edge can influence a very pale colour |
| Peel-and-stick sample | Fast, low-mess, repositionable testing | Large-area colour comparison without wet paint | Check dimensions, whether real paint was used, available colours and the sheen represented; products differ |
| Colour chip | Early shortlisting and comparison of related shades | Colour-family relationships and undertones at a glance | The small area can make a colour appear different from a wall-sized application |
Do not assume one format is objectively most accurate across all manufacturers. Portability, surface realism, sheen match, available colours, sample size and wall impact are separate trade-offs.

Step 2: Prepare a representative test area
Choose a clean, typical surface
Test on a clean, dull, dry area that represents the wall you will paint. Remove dust and grease, and let repairs, filler or washing dry fully. A glossy or unusually damaged patch can make the sample look different from the rest of the room. If the existing colour is very strong, patterned or much darker than the candidate, ask the sample manufacturer whether priming is required; the product directions control the preparation.
Use the sample product’s application instructions
There is no single correct method for every sample pot. Benjamin Moore’s sample guidance recommends at least two coats. Dunn-Edwards’ direct-wall method calls for a primed 2-by-2-foot area, two coats and a 2-inch primed border; it advises avoiding tape because an edge or line can telegraph through the eventual paint job. Those are brand-specific directions, not a universal rule. Follow the label for your product, including recommended tools, temperature, drying and recoat times.
Gather simple tools
- A small brush for cutting in edges and a roller cover suited to the surface
- A tray and liner, if the sample is large enough to roll
- Drop cloths to protect floors and furniture
- White foam-core board if you want a movable comparison panel
- Painter’s tape only where the product instructions allow it; do not use it to create a test border when the manufacturer warns that lines may show
Step 3: Apply enough paint to judge the colour
- Mark and label the test. Write the colour name, product line, sheen and date on the wall-side edge of a board or on a removable label. Labelling prevents confusion when similar samples are beside one another.
- Prime when the directions call for it. Dunn-Edwards’ cited direct-wall procedure uses a 2-by-2-foot primed area and leaves a 2-inch primed border. If your product does not specify that method, do not assume it applies; use its own preparation instructions.
- Apply the first coat evenly. Keep the film representative of normal painting rather than brushing on a thin, translucent smear. A roller gives a closer texture match on most broad wall areas; use a brush where the manufacturer directs.
- Respect the stated recoat time. Do not judge a wet or partially cured film. Drying depends on the product, temperature, humidity, ventilation and film thickness.
- Apply the second coat, or the number specified. Benjamin Moore recommends at least two coats for its sample-paint method. Two coats can cover the previous colour and reveal the intended depth; one coat may make a candidate look falsely weak or uneven.
- Let the final coat dry before comparing. A colour can shift as water or solvent leaves the film. Keep the room’s usual ventilation, but avoid touching or repositioning a board until the surface is dry enough according to the label.
For a movable test, paint the face of a white foam-core board rather than relying only on a tiny chip. Keep an unpainted edge so you can carry the panel without touching wet paint. Remember that a board shows colour against a white substrate, not the exact texture or absorption of your wall.
How large should the sample be, and where should it go?
Use a wall-sized patch when surface context matters
A patch around 2 by 2 feet is a practical starting point because it is large enough to see a colour shift while remaining manageable to repaint. The exact size is product-dependent. Benjamin Moore describes an 8-ounce sample as covering approximately one 2-by-2-foot area with two coats. Treat that as the manufacturer’s estimate for that sample, not a guarantee for every wall, colour or application.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Place samples where they will encounter different conditions rather than lining every colour along one short wall. Test at least two walls when the room has different window exposures or one wall is strongly shaded. Include a corner or transition if the colour will meet another painted room, and view it beside the trim, flooring, cabinetry or countertop that will stay in place.
Move a board or peel-and-stick sample
A board or repositionable sample can travel from a bright wall to a shaded wall, beside a window, near a lamp and next to the room’s main furnishings. Move it without changing its orientation if possible; rotating a sample can alter how directional light strikes a textured surface. Peel-and-stick products are convenient, but confirm that the adhesive is intended for your surface and remove it according to the supplier’s instructions.
Step 4: Read the sample in every light the room uses
Check morning, midday and evening
Benjamin Moore’s paint-sample guidance says: “Test your paint colors from morning to evening, under both natural and artificial lighting conditions.” In practice, view the sample in morning light, the strongest daylight period, late afternoon and at night with the room’s normal lamps or ceiling fixtures switched on. Cloud cover and direct sun can produce different readings, so one quick daytime glance is not enough.

Keep the normal bulbs and furnishings
Do not remove the furniture or replace bulbs just to make a sample look cleaner. The goal is to know how the colour will appear after the project. Turn on the lamps you normally use, close or open curtains as you usually would, and look from the room’s main seating and walking positions. Check the sample from several distances; a colour that feels balanced up close can look too strong across the room.
Watch for interactions, not isolated impressions
Ask specific questions while observing: Does the colour become noticeably greener beside the sofa? Does the trim look yellow or blue against it? Does the darkest corner lose detail? Does evening light make a warm neutral feel muddy? Record these observations instead of relying on a single first reaction.
Step 5: Confirm the final sheen and product use
A sample can represent colour without representing the performance or appearance of the final coating. Benjamin Moore describes its cited liquid sample as interior eggshell and says sample paint is for colour representation, not the final painting project; it lacks performance-enhancing components found in regular paint. Do not use a sample pot as a substitute for the finish you will put on the whole room.
If the project will be flat, satin, semi-gloss or another sheen, verify the colour in that intended sheen whenever the supplier offers it. BEHR describes its BEHR-painted Samplize samples as eggshell and recommends an 8-ounce BEHR sample in the chosen sheen as a final check. Dunn-Edwards says its 8-ounce Perfect Palette samples are available only in velvet sheen and recommends testing a quart in the intended sheen when colour and sheen accuracy—particularly for darker colours—matter.
Some product lines have regional or finish restrictions. Dulux UK advises checking that the selected colour is offered in the finish you want; that is UK product guidance and should not be generalized to other regions. Read the label for interior or exterior use, substrate limitations and any exclusions before buying project quantities.

| Benjamin Moore peel-and-stick samples | 9 by 14.75 inches; made by Samplize using Benjamin Moore paint; movable and reusable | Confirm current colour and product availability before ordering |
| Sherwin-Williams Color to Go | Small quart containers with approximately 75 square feet of coverage; any of 1,700 colours | Product-page figures; the stated Emerald Designer Edition exception applies to the colour availability claim |
| HGTV Home by Sherwin-Williams sample directions | Clean, dull, dry surface; approximately 2-by-2-foot roller area; 3/8- to 3/4-inch nap synthetic roller cover; apply at 50–90°F | At 77°F and 50% relative humidity, the cited page lists touch-dry and recoat times of 1 hour |
| Dunn-Edwards Perfect Palette | 8-ounce samples available in velvet sheen | The maker recommends a quart in the intended sheen when exact colour and sheen matter, especially with darker colours |
| BEHR-painted Samplize samples | Eggshell; standard 9-by-15-inch and extra-large 15-by-18-inch sizes | BEHR’s August 4, 2026 guidance recommends an 8-ounce sample in the chosen sheen for final confirmation; sizes and availability can change |
| Dulux UK tester guidance | Roller testers and peel-and-stick samples are described | UK-specific guidance; check that the colour is offered in your selected finish |
Coverage, dry time and sheen in this table belong to the named product and conditions. They should not be transferred to another manufacturer’s sample or treated as a promise for your wall.

Common testing mistakes and how to correct them
Judging only on a phone or monitor
Why it fails: A screen is not calibrated to your room, and the displayed colour may not match the paint formula.
Correction: Use the screen only for inspiration, then compare physical chips and a painted finalist in the room.
Using one thin coat
Why it fails: The existing colour and substrate can show through, making the candidate look lighter, duller or streakier than the finished wall.
Correction: Apply the number of coats specified for the sample; Benjamin Moore’s cited method calls for at least two.
Testing beside a window only
Why it fails: Direct daylight can flatter or exaggerate a colour that will spend much of the day in shade or artificial light.
Correction: Test more than one wall and observe the sample from morning through night with normal fixtures on.
Ignoring the wall’s texture
Why it fails: A board or chip cannot show how texture catches highlights and shadows.

- Works with Latex Paint, Oil-Based Paint & Stains – Premium synthetic filaments hold more paint, reduce streaks, and provide a clean finish with latex paints, oil coatings, and wood stains.
Correction: Include a direct-wall test when texture, repairs or an unusual substrate are important; use a board as a portable supplement, not a perfect replica.
Assuming every sample has the final sheen
Why it fails: A colour in eggshell or velvet can read differently from the same colour in satin, semi-gloss or flat paint.
Correction: Check the sample’s sheen and obtain the intended finish for the final confirmation when available.
Painting a test patch that will be difficult to cover
Why it fails: A heavily contrasting patch, tape ridge or unprimed edge can remain visible after the project starts.
Correction: Follow the manufacturer’s prep method. Where the directions call for it, prime the area and leave the specified border; avoid tape if the product guidance warns that lines may telegraph.
Treating sample paint as a durability test
Why it fails: Some sample formulas are intended only to show colour and do not contain the performance components of regular paint.
Correction: Use the sample to choose colour, then buy the correct full-size product and finish for the room’s wear, cleaning and moisture requirements.

A practical decision checklist
- Have you reduced the choices to a few physical chips rather than relying on a screen?
- Did you compare each finalist with the room’s permanent flooring, trim, cabinetry, counters and furnishings?
- Is the test surface clean, dry and representative, with primer used when the product directions require it?
- Did you apply enough coats to hide the previous colour and create an even film?
- Have you tested more than one wall or moved the same board or peel-and-stick sample through different conditions?
- Did you observe the sample in daylight and under the room’s usual artificial lights from morning through evening?
- Does the sample’s sheen match the finish you intend to buy, or have you checked a separate sample in that sheen?
- Have you confirmed that the colour is available in the required product line, region and finish?
- Are you treating the sample as a colour reference rather than proof of the final paint’s durability or coverage?
Once one colour remains convincing in all of those conditions, record its exact name, product line, sheen and colour reference before ordering. That record prevents a near-match from being substituted when you return for the full project quantity.
