The reliable way to choose a Sherwin-Williams color is to use digital tools and paper chips only to narrow your options, then judge a real painted sample on the surface in your room. Lighting, sheen, surrounding finishes, and the surface itself can change the way a color appears, so a screen preview or tiny chip cannot make the final decision for you.
For an existing wall, cabinet, fabric, or other object, take a physical sample to a Sherwin-Williams store and ask an associate to scan it. A controlled scan is more dependable than trying to identify a formula from a phone photograph. The workflow below shows which sample to use, how to test it, and how to avoid the most common color-matching mistakes.

Use this three-stage workflow
Make the decision in stages rather than buying a gallon after seeing a color online:
- Screen digitally. Use ColorSnap Visualizer to reduce a large color collection to a short list.
- Compare physical samples. Order chips, peel-and-stick samples, or a wet quart for the finalists.
- Verify on the actual surface. Paint a sample area or board, let it dry, and view it in the room’s changing light before committing to full-size paint.
Sherwin-Williams color-marketing director Sue Wadden describes the purpose as eliminating color surprises. She also advises using more than one sample type when a decision is important: seeing a color digitally, on paper, and as applied paint increases confidence because each format has different limitations.

Perfect for walls, trim, cabinets, doors, furniture, and detailed cutting-in work on any project.

Start with ColorSnap Visualizer, not a gallon
The ColorSnap Visualizer mobile app is the fastest way to explore possibilities. Sherwin-Williams says it gives access to more than 1,700 colors, can suggest matches from a photo, and can virtually paint a scene. Its views for daytime and nighttime lighting help you see how a shortlist might shift before you order anything.
What the app is good at
- Reducing hundreds of colors to a manageable shortlist.
- Showing relationships between wall color, trim, and accent colors in one scene.
- Revealing that a color you like in a bright daytime image may look deeper or cooler at night.
- Saving candidates so you can compare them without relying on memory.
What the app cannot prove
A phone camera, the photograph’s exposure, your display calibration, and the room assumptions used by a visualization all affect the preview. Treat the result as a screening tool, not a color formula or guarantee. Once you have a shortlist, move to physical samples.

| Sample format | Published cost or size | Best use | Limitations |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2 x 3 paper chip | Up to 10 free chips per order, according to Sherwin-Williams’ sample-ordering page | Early comparison, portability, and checking several colors beside existing finishes | Small area and paper surface; Sherwin-Williams says paper is less accurate than a wet sample |
| 8 x 8 peel-and-stick sample | $3.95 each on the current Color Tools page | A larger, mess-free swatch that can be moved from wall to wall | Availability varies by color; adhesive and the material behind it are not the same as painted drywall |
| Color To Go wet sample | $9.59 per quart; approximately 75 square feet of coverage, as currently listed by Sherwin-Williams | Final decision on the intended surface after drying | Formulated for sample use only, not as the finish coat for the project |
| Store color scan | Price and service availability are not stated in the supplied Sherwin-Williams information | Matching an existing physical paint, fabric, finish, or object | Accuracy depends on the condition, size, cleanliness, and uniformity of the item being scanned |
Use a paper chip when you are still exploring. Upgrade to a peel-and-stick sample when you need a larger area without painting. For an expensive or color-sensitive project, use a wet sample as the deciding test. Prices and offers can change, so confirm the current amount and whether your color is available before ordering.

For a broad first pass
Order several free 2 x 3 chips, up to the limit listed by Sherwin-Williams. Keep the chips together with notes identifying the color name and number. Compare them in the room where they will be used, not only under a store’s lighting.

For a larger, no-mess comparison
Choose 8 x 8 peel-and-stick samples when you want to move finalists between walls or avoid brush marks while deciding. Press the sample flat and view its edges as well as its center. Because availability varies by color, check that the exact color you want can be ordered in this format.
For the final check
Buy a Color To Go quart for each serious finalist. Sherwin-Williams lists the sample at $9.59 and about 75 square feet of coverage. That is enough to create a useful test area, but the product is formulated for sample use only. Do not treat the sample quart as the finish paint for the completed room.
Test the color in the room, step by step
- Pick a representative location. Use the wall that receives the typical amount of daylight and is visible beside the room’s trim, flooring, counters, upholstery, or cabinetry. If the existing wall is strongly colored, test on a primed board or a properly prepared section so the old color does not distort the preview.
- Prepare the surface. Clean dust and grease, repair obvious differences in texture, and use the same primer or preparation planned for the project. A rough, glossy, stained, or strongly tinted surface can make the same paint look different from a smooth, uniform one.
- Apply a generous test area. A very small dab is hard to judge. Paint a broad patch or a movable board large enough to see from across the room. Apply the sample with the method that approximates the final job—roller texture for a rolled wall, for example.
- Keep the test visible beside the finishes. Do not evaluate the color in isolation. Place the board or patch near white trim, wood, stone, metal, flooring, and fabrics that will remain in the room.
- Let the paint dry fully. Wet paint reflects light differently and can appear darker, glossier, or more saturated than the dry film. Make the decision only after the sample has dried.
- Observe it at several times. Check morning, afternoon, and artificial light. Sherwin-Williams’ Color Fidelity guidance states that the only way to know how a color will perform is to paint a surface and observe it under different lighting conditions.
- Look from normal distances. Stand where you usually sit or enter the room, then inspect the patch close up for undertone and finish. A color that works at arm’s length may feel too intense across the room, or vice versa.
Record your observations rather than relying on memory. Note whether the color turns warmer, cooler, brighter, muddier, lighter, or darker as the light changes. If you are comparing several samples, label each board and keep them in the room at the same time so changing weather does not create a false comparison.
Why the same color changes in different rooms
Light direction and color temperature
North-facing daylight often reads cooler, while warm afternoon sun can pull a color toward yellow or peach. LED, fluorescent, and incandescent sources also have different color characteristics. A color that looks neutral at noon may show a blue or green undertone under evening lamps. This is why a digital daytime rendering cannot stand in for an evening check.

Surrounding colors
White trim can make a wall color appear more saturated. Red flooring, yellow wood, green landscaping, or a blue sofa can reflect into the painted surface and change its apparent undertone. View the sample beside the finishes that will stay, not beside an empty room or a temporary white board.
Surface and sheen
Texture scatters light, while a smoother or glossier film reflects more of it. A patch on unprimed drywall, a previously painted wall, and a cabinet door can therefore produce different impressions even when the color name is identical. Match the sample’s preparation and intended sheen as closely as practical before judging it.

Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteWet paint versus dry paint
Color To Go is useful because it shows applied paint rather than a screen or paper approximation, but the wet film is not the final appearance. Wait for the sample to dry and inspect it in the actual room before deciding.
How to match an existing wall, fabric, or object
When the goal is to reproduce a color already present, bring the physical item to a Sherwin-Williams store. Suitable samples include a clean paint chip from the wall, a removable piece of painted material, a fabric swatch, or another object large and uniform enough to measure.

- Bates paint brushes come in a convenient 6 pieces with 3 flat and 3 angled bristle styles, including (1”, 1.5”, 2”) flat and (1.5”, 2”, 2.5”) angled bristles, perfect for tackling any surface painting or staining job.
- The sturdy natural bristles of each brush are designed to hold more paint, creating a smoother finish with fewer streaks and saving you time on the job.
- The lightweight wooden handles provide extra comfort and ease during long painting processes like walls, trims, cabinets, and doors.
- These versatile brushes are ready-to-use, easy to clean, and can be reused multiple times, making them economical as well as reliable tools for any painting project.
- Bates paint brushes can be used for both oil-based paints as well as latex stains and are ideal for home or commercial projects such as decks, fences or DIY painting jobs.
- Choose the best piece available. Use an area that is not faded, dirty, chalky, wet, highly textured, or covered with a strong sheen. If the wall has aged unevenly, take more than one small piece from representative areas and explain the situation to the associate.
- Ask for a controlled scan. Sherwin-Williams says associates can scan a physical sample. Its ColorSnap Match Pro system uses a controlled light source, full-spectrum white LEDs, color algorithms, and Sherwin-Williams color libraries to analyze the sample.
- Take the result as a starting formula. A scan can identify the closest available match, but it cannot reverse fading, dirt, surface texture, or differences in sheen. Apply the proposed paint to a test area and compare it with the original in the same lighting.
- Bring context when possible. Tell the store whether the original is interior or exterior, what surface it is on, and whether you need a similar sheen. Those details help you evaluate the result appropriately.
A phone photograph can help narrow choices in ColorSnap Visualizer, but it should not be treated as a guaranteed mixing formula. Camera exposure, white balance, and the light falling on the object can all shift the apparent color.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. When to use more than one sample type
- Routine repaint in a forgiving neutral: use a few paper chips, then confirm the winner with a wet sample.
- Strong, dark, or highly saturated color: compare a peel-and-stick sample and a wet sample, because small paper chips exaggerate uncertainty.
- Open-plan room: test on a board that can be carried through adjoining spaces. A color may look balanced in one light zone and noticeably different near another window.
- Expensive project or permanent finish: use digital screening, a large physical sample, and a dried wet sample. The extra step is cheaper than repainting a room, cabinet run, or exterior section.
- Color match: combine the store scan with an applied test. Measurement identifies a candidate; the painted comparison confirms whether it works on your surface.
Using several formats is not redundant. It exposes different failure points: screens can be miscalibrated, paper can be too small, peel-and-stick material can differ from a painted film, and a wet sample can reveal how the color behaves under real light.

Choosing from a screen alone
Symptom: The delivered color looks unlike the app preview. Fix: Treat the app as a shortlist generator and verify the finalist with a dried sample in the room.
Judging a tiny chip against a large wall
Symptom: The color seems acceptable on paper but overwhelming or weak after application. Fix: Use an 8 x 8 sample or a broad wet-sample patch so your eyes can judge the color at a realistic scale.

Looking only at midday
Symptom: The color changes dramatically after sunset or when lamps are switched on. Fix: Check morning, afternoon, and artificial light before buying the full amount.
Painting directly over a contrasting wall
Symptom: The sample appears dirtier, brighter, or darker than expected. Fix: Test over a consistently prepared surface or a primed board that approximates the final substrate.

Comparing samples in different locations
Symptom: You cannot tell whether the color changed or the light changed. Fix: Move the same board through the room, or keep all samples together and observe them at the same times.
Assuming a scan recreates an aged finish perfectly
Symptom: The matched paint is close but not identical after application. Fix: Check the original for fading, dirt, texture, and sheen; use a larger, cleaner sample and approve the result only after a dry test.
