To tie a bow on a wreath, make two ribbon loops, knot them together, shape the loops and tails, then fasten the bow to the wreath with florist’s wire. For a fuller bow, gather several folded loops at the centre with wire instead of tying two loops together. The steps below explain both methods so you can choose the look you want.
Choose your ribbon and fastening method
Wired or wire-edged ribbon is a practical choice because you can shape its loops by hand. Match the ribbon width, fullness and tail length to the wreath and the look you want; a tutorial recommends 2.5-inch ribbon for many wreaths, but that is a suggestion, not a universal sizing rule.
You will need ribbon, scissors and a fastener. Florist’s wire can gather the centre of a fuller bow and attach either style to the wreath. Green florist’s wire may blend into greenery. A thin wire or zip tie is another option for securing a bow. A bow maker can hold loops while you work, but it is optional; a mat and your hands are enough.

Step 1: Cut the ribbon and form the loops
Cut enough ribbon for the loops and tails you want, leaving some extra length so you can trim the tails after shaping.
For a basic tied bow
Hold the ribbon and form two loops of roughly equal size, leaving ribbon below them for the tails. If the loops are uneven, adjust them before tying.

For a fuller gathered bow
Fold the ribbon back and forth into several loops, keeping the folds about the size you want the finished loops to be. Pinch the folded ribbon firmly at the centre. This is a gathered bow, not a two-loop knot.
Step 2: Secure the bow’s centre and shape it
Tie the two-loop bow
Cross one loop over the other, pass it through the opening, and pull the loops snugly to form a knot. Adjust the loops so they sit evenly.

Gather the multi-loop bow
Keep the folded loops pinched together at the centre and wrap florist’s wire tightly around the gathered folds. Twist or secure the wire so the folds hold together, then fan out the loops and shape them by hand.
For either style, gently arrange the loops and tails until the bow looks balanced. Wired ribbon can be reshaped by hand; take care not to pull the centre loose while fluffing it.

Step 3: Finish the tails and attach the bow
Trim the tails to the length you want. If desired, cut a notch or angled finish at each end.
To attach the bow, pass florist’s wire through or around its centre and fasten it to the wreath. If you made a gathered bow, its centre wire can also provide the attachment ends. A thin wire or zip tie can be used instead when appropriate for the wreath. Position the bow, secure the fastener, then adjust the loops and tails by hand so they sit as intended.
