Tying a quilt secures its top, batting, and backing with individual stitches and knots instead of continuous quilting. Smooth and stabilize the quilt sandwich, then place ties no farther apart than the batting manufacturer allows. Tying is a quick way to finish a quilt and leaves a puffier look, but it is not suitable for every batting or quilt.

What you need to tie a quilt

  • A quilt top, batting, and backing
  • Tie material such as perle cotton, sport-weight yarn, narrow ribbon, embroidery floss, or crochet thread
  • A large-eye darner or chenille needle suited to your material and quilt thickness
  • Scissors
  • Pins or basting supplies to stabilize the layers

Choose tie material and a needle that work together and can pass through your quilt sandwich. The sources do not specify one required needle size or a single best material.

How far apart should quilt ties be?

Follow the batting’s stated maximum quilting distance. Ties placed farther apart than that limit may not secure the batting adequately. A general reference is 4 to 6 inches: Missouri Star Blog describes that as common guidance for many battings, and a University of Tennessee Extension quilt-camp booklet gives similar advice. These are not universal specifications, so check your batting’s instructions.

Use the quilt design to plan an even layout, but keep every tie within the batting’s maximum distance. If the product instructions do not allow your intended spacing, choose a different layout or a batting suited to it.

Prepare the quilt sandwich

  1. Lay out the backing. Place it wrong side up on a flat surface and smooth it.
  2. Add the batting. Lay it over the backing and smooth the layers.
  3. Place the quilt top. Set it right side up over the batting and align the layers.
  4. Stabilize the sandwich. Use pins or tacking and basting to keep the layers aligned while you work.
  5. Plan the tie points. Use the design as a guide and check that spacing does not exceed the batting’s limit.

Step-by-step: how to tie a quilt

  1. Thread the needle. Use a darner or chenille needle appropriate for your tie material and quilt thickness.
  2. Make a running stitch. Pass the needle through all three layers, beginning and ending on the quilt top. Leave a tail.
  3. Make a return stitch. Backstitch through the same holes and all three layers, ending on the quilt top.
  4. Leave two tails. Clip the working end so you have two ends to knot.
  5. Tie a square knot. Tie right over left, then left over right. Keep the knot near the surface, but do not pull so tightly that the fabric puckers.
  6. Trim the tails. Choose a tail length that suits the look you want.
  7. Repeat and check. Continue at the planned points, checking the spacing against the batting instructions.

Optional methods and variations

A curved needle can be useful when passing through several layers, and a continuous-thread approach can be used for multiple tie points. These are options rather than requirements; the tie-by-tie method above is also suitable for beginners.

Choose tie locations that work with the quilt design, while keeping within the maximum distance allowed by the batting. The ties secure the full sandwich, not just the quilt top.

Choosing whether tying suits your quilt

Tying is a quick alternative to hand or machine quilting and generally produces a puffier result with larger unquilted areas. Before choosing it, confirm that your batting is designed or rated for the spacing you plan to use. Consider the time and effort available, the texture you want, and the batting’s instructions.
