To tie-dye a shirt, prewash a light-colored shirt, fold or scrunch it and bind it with rubber bands, apply dye, keep the tied shirt damp while the dye reacts, then rinse and wash it. The steps below use Dharma Trading Co.’s fiber-reactive dye method; other dyes and kits can require different preparation and aftercare.

- Fiber-reactive dye and soda ash fixer
- Rubber bands
- Water and a container for the soda ash soak
- Squeeze bottles or another suitable dye applicator
- Gloves and a dust mask for handling soda ash
- A plastic bag and a protected work surface
Dharma Trading Co. lists cotton and several other natural fibers as suitable for its fiber-reactive dyes, and cautions that 50/50 blends may yield pale results. Check your dye’s label for its approved fabrics and directions. A group kit may bundle supplies for several shirts, but check its current contents and follow the instructions included with it.
How to tie-dye a shirt
1. Prewash and prepare the shirt
Wash the shirt first to remove dirt, oils, and finishes that can interfere with dye absorption. Avoid fabric softener. A clean shirt gives the dye a better chance to take evenly.

For easier, more defined folding, wet the shirt and squeeze or spin out excess water before you begin. Protect your work surface and wear clothes you do not mind staining.
2. Fold and bind it
Fold, twist, scrunch, or spiral the shirt into the pattern you want, then secure it with rubber bands. The folds and ties create areas where dye is less able to travel. As Dharma Trading Co. explains in its Tie-Dye Instructions, tie-dye patterns come from preparing fabric to inhibit dye flow into folds. Tighter binding generally creates more distinct resist areas.

3. Soak it in soda ash
For Dharma’s fiber-reactive method, dissolve one cup of soda ash fixer per gallon of warm water and soak the tied shirt for about 5–15 minutes. Wear gloves and a dust mask for this step, as Dharma directs. Squeeze out excess solution afterward so the shirt is damp but not dripping. If your product label gives different directions, follow its instructions.
4. Apply the dye
Apply dye with squeeze bottles or another applicator suited to the product. Apply to both sides if you want color on both sides, and work dye into the folds where you want fuller coverage. The amount and placement of dye determine the visible color areas; the bound fabric resists dye penetration.

5. Keep the shirt damp while the dye reacts
Place the still-tied shirt in a plastic bag to keep it damp while the dye cures. Dharma recommends at least four hours and preferably 24 hours for brighter colors; below 70°F, the reaction can take longer. These timings apply to this fiber-reactive method, not automatically to every kit or dye.
6. Rinse and wash
Rinse the shirt under cold running water while it is still tied. Then use warm water as you remove the rubber bands, continuing until the water runs fairly clear. Put the shirt through a full wash cycle promptly. Dharma advises against washing too many shirts together, since excess dye can muddy the wash water.

How long should tie-dye sit?
With Dharma’s fiber-reactive method, keep the shirt damp for at least four hours; 24 hours is preferred for brighter colors. If the temperature is below 70°F, allow longer. A different dye or kit may set on another schedule, so use its own label directions rather than borrowing these timings.
Do you need to wet the shirt first?
For this method, prewash the shirt, then wet it and remove excess water before folding if you want folds that are easier to define. After the soda ash soak, squeeze the shirt until damp rather than dripping before applying dye. Keep it damp during the cure. The product’s instructions govern if you use a different dye method.

Can you use Rit All-Purpose Dye instead?
Rit All-Purpose Dye has a separate set of official directions and is not a substitute for the soda-ash steps above. Rit says fabric content and weight affect the resulting color and recommends its ColorStay fixative after dyeing and before washing to help reduce bleeding. Follow the Rit All-Purpose Dye instructions if using that product. Do not combine steps from different dye methods unless the product instructions say to.
How do you wash tie-dye for the first time?
For the fiber-reactive process above, rinse cold with the shirt still tied, then rinse warm while untying until the water runs fairly clear. Wash promptly in a full cycle, and avoid putting too many freshly dyed shirts together because excess dye may muddy the water.
