Bleach tie-dye is reverse dyeing: instead of adding color, you bind a dyed garment and use diluted bleach to remove or change its existing color. For a first project, choose a 100% cotton shirt, test a hidden area, and monitor the fabric closely; the result may be off-white or another shade rather than white.
What you need to know before starting
Fiber content and dye both affect the result. Clorox recommends 100% cotton for its tie-dye method and says to avoid polyester and spandex for that project. Its bleach-art guidance says cotton, rayon, and linen are more likely to change color than polyester, acrylic, or nylon, but no fiber guarantees a particular shade. Test a hidden spot first, following product instructions.
Do not use this method on wool, silk, spandex, mohair, or leather. Clorox warns that undiluted bleach can cause holes to develop in fabric over time, so use the dilution specified for the particular product and never treat its project ratio as universal. Gather supplies and prepare the work area
- A 100% cotton shirt
- Rubber bands
- Two plastic dishpans
- Protective gloves
- A liquid measuring cup and scissors
- Clorox Disinfecting Bleach and 3% hydrogen peroxide, if following the Clorox method below
- A clean white towel
Work where there is good airflow, especially indoors, wear gloves, and avoid splashes. Follow the bleach label for safe handling and product-specific directions. CDC advises good ventilation when using bleach products; the American Cleaning Institute also advises testing a small area and checking product instructions. How to reverse tie-dye a shirt
- Test the garment. Apply the intended diluted bleach to an inconspicuous area and observe the color and fabric before treating the visible part.
- Bind the shirt. For circles, pinch sections and secure them with rubber bands. For a spiral, twist the shirt into a flat disk and band it.
- Prepare the bleach bath. In a dishpan, mix 1 cup of Clorox Disinfecting Bleach with 1 gallon of cool water. This is the ratio in Clorox’s project guide, not a general ratio for other bleach products; use the label directions for your product.
- Prepare the separate peroxide bath. Clorox’s guide specifies 1 cup of 3% hydrogen peroxide mixed with 1 gallon of water in a second dishpan. Keep the two solutions separate.
- Treat and monitor the shirt. Wearing gloves, submerge and swirl the bound shirt in the bleach solution. Check the color at about 2 minutes. If you want more change, the guide says you may return it to the solution; stop when satisfied or once 5 minutes have passed.
- Stop the treatment and rinse. Transfer the shirt to the peroxide bath and carefully remove the bands. Swirl until the fabric stops fizzing, then rinse several times in cool water and air-dry. This peroxide-bath procedure is Clorox’s method, not a universal requirement for every bleach product; follow your product’s instructions.

- A DIFFERENT WAY TO TIE DYE: Tulip Reverse Tie Dye takes traditional tie dye to a whole new level by removing color from darker fabrics then adding bright tie-dye colors back in - it's reverse tie dye! Kit includes 1 bottle of Color Changer, 4 (2.75-oz.) bottles of One-Step Dye (pink, orange, robin’s egg blue and lilac), 2 pairs of gloves, 10 rubber bands and a project guide. Project count varies based on size of garment and amount of dye used.
- GREAT WITH ANY TIE-DYE TECHNIQUE: Fold and tie up your dark fabrics just like you would for traditional tie-dye patterns, then apply the Color Changer to achieve tie-dye patterns in a lighter shade within the fabric. You can leave your project as is, or add One-Step Dyes to the tie-dye patterns for a bolder, brighter look!
- USE WITH DARK NATURAL-FIBER FABRICS: Color Changer and One-Step Dyes work best on 100% natural-fiber fabrics like cotton, rayon and silk. Note: Results may vary by fabric fiber type.
- MACHINE WASHABLE: Dyes are safe to machine wash – colors stay bright and bold through repeated washings. Note: Dyes will appear darker on damp fabric prior to washing and will naturally lighten after laundering.
- ADULT SUPERVISION RECOMMENDED: Follow instructions carefully, wear the included gloves, and always monitor the color-removal process to avoid potential damage to fabric fibers.
Choose a pattern and treatment approach
Bound-and-submerged patterns
Pinched sections make circular bursts; twisting the shirt into a disk makes a spiral. Submerging the bound garment treats the exposed fabric around the bands. The finished pattern depends on where the shirt is folded, how it is secured, and how its dye responds.
Controlled surface application
Applying diluted bleach to selected areas can give you more control over placement than immersing the garment, but it still depends on the fabric and dye. The cited guidance does not provide a standardized comparison or measured ranking of application techniques, so test the method and fabric before committing to the full design.

What to expect from the color
Bleach removes or changes existing dye; it does not add a new color. A treated section may turn off-white or shift to another color, and the same process can look different on garments with different dyes. A cotton label alone does not predict the exact result: use the hidden-area test as your best practical check.
