You can create a convincing hand-drawn floral wall mural without drawing the entire composition freehand: project a floral line drawing onto the wall, trace the projected guide, then redraw the lines with paint markers. Kristi Linauer’s guest-bedroom project shows both the strength of that method and its practical limits. Her July 13, 2020 progress post (updated February 8, 2025) ends before the mural’s protective finish is confirmed, so this is a transfer-and-linework guide, not a claim of a completed, durability-tested mural.

What this floral mural method actually involves
The finished look is hand drawn, but the layout is not created entirely from imagination. Linauer selected a large, clear floral line drawing, prepared an image file, had it printed on a transparency, and projected it onto a guest-bedroom wall. She traced the projected design and then made the visible lines with broad paint markers. That distinction matters: projection solves the difficult problem of enlarging and positioning a complex design, while the marker pass preserves the irregular, personal quality of a drawing.

Her project is documented in “DIY Hand Drawn Floral Line Drawing Wall Mural (Part 1 – Progress)”. It is a progress report rather than a complete beginning-to-end tutorial. The post does not establish the wall’s exact custom-mixed paint formula, how long the markers will last, whether the lines are washable, or whether a clear coat was successfully tested.

Materials and decisions before you project
- Floral artwork: Choose a simple line drawing with clear contours and enough open space for the wall’s scale. A dense illustration becomes difficult to align and trace.
- Transparency: Linauer had the prepared image printed on a transparency. The transparency must be compatible with the projector you own or borrow.
- Overhead projector: The projector is the transfer tool, not a guarantee that the whole wall will fit in one frame. Linauer had purchased an inexpensive unit several years earlier and estimated that it had cost about $50 on eBay at that time. That historical price is not a current buying guide.
- Line-making markers: Her specific combination was a DecoColor extra-wide acrylic paint marker in gold and a Sharpie extra-wide water-based paint marker in white. Equivalent marker types may behave differently on different wall paints.
- Wall and protection supplies: Start with a clean, smooth, dry, even surface. Keep a pencil for light walls or chalk for dark walls if you need a temporary tracing guide, plus a damp rag for removing those guides where appropriate.
- Optional clear finish: A flat topcoat was only a proposed next step in Linauer’s installment. Treat it as an unconfirmed option, not a required or proven part of this method.
Linauer also estimated that one printed transparency cost about 80 cents for her project. That is a source-specific historical figure, not a typical current printing price.
Scale the design before tracing
Measure the usable wall area, including trim, doors, windows, and furniture that will interrupt the composition. Decide whether the flowers should fill the wall, form a centered panel, or stop at a particular height. Resize the digital artwork to that proportion before making the transparency. Designing to scale is also the first recommendation in HGTV’s floral-mural guidance.
Print a design with recognizable anchor points: a large blossom, a distinctive leaf cluster, or a stem intersection. Those points make it easier to reconnect sections if the projector cannot show the whole wall at once. Avoid relying on a pattern that must repeat perfectly unless the artwork was built as a seamless repeat.
Project and trace the floral drawing
- Prepare the wall. Remove dust and allow any fresh paint to dry fully. Repair bumps or holes that would interrupt a continuous line. A smooth, dry, even wall is also the starting condition recommended by Creative Wall Paint’s wall-mural kit instructions; those instructions are general vendor guidance, not an independent test of this marker process.
- Darken the room. Turn off lights and close curtains so the projected edges are visible. Projection is easiest to read in a dark room, as HGTV notes.
- Set the projector square to the wall. Place it on a stable surface and aim the lens perpendicular to the wall. Correct keystone distortion before tracing; otherwise, circles and repeated motifs can become stretched.
- Position a manageable section. Move the projector until the image reaches the intended width or height. Mark a few reference points lightly so you can return to the same alignment.
- Trace the guide. On a light wall, use a pencil; on a dark wall, use chalk. Follow the major stems and flower outlines first, then add smaller details. Keep the tracing light enough to cover with the final marker.
- Record the overlap. If the whole wall does not fit in one projection, leave several repeated landmarks at the edge of each section. Photograph the projected position or note measurements from the ceiling and adjacent wall so the next setup can be aligned.
- Move and reconnect. Shift the projector only after completing the current section. Reproject the landmarks, connect stems and leaves, and check the overall rhythm from across the room before committing to marker.
- Turn off the projector and inspect. Walk back several feet. Correct awkward joins, accidental tangencies, or lines that drift outside the intended composition while the guide is still editable.
Why projection distance can change the design
Linauer could not place her projector far enough back to show the entire intended wall height in one image. Her floral drawing was not a seamless vertical repeat, so she pieced sections together and freehanded some lower details. This is a structural limitation, not merely an inconvenience: when a design has no repeat, every move introduces a chance for spacing or scale to change.

Plan for that limitation by dividing the artwork at natural transitions, such as a long stem or a gap between blossoms. Do not cut through the center of a flower if you can avoid it. Keep a small portion of the previous section visible when repositioning, and compare the projected width of a known leaf or petal before tracing new lines. If the lower part must be freehanded, simplify it deliberately so it reads as an intentional extension rather than a failed continuation.
Apply the marker linework
Start with the color that establishes the structure
Linauer began with an extra-wide gold acrylic marker. Gold gave the mural a warm metallic direction, but she found the actual shade darker and yellower than expected. Test a few strokes on a hidden or spare painted surface first; the color on a marker cap or online product image is not a reliable substitute for your wall’s paint color.
Work in sections that you can reach comfortably. Keep the marker at a consistent angle and pressure for stems that should have an even width, then vary pressure only where a deliberately hand-drawn taper is wanted. Follow the traced guide loosely instead of trying to make every wobble identical. The goal is controlled irregularity.
Use a second color to adjust contrast
After seeing the gold on the wall, Linauer added loose white strokes and allowed some gold to remain visible. The white partially overlaid the gold and produced the higher-contrast appearance she preferred. This is an aesthetic choice specific to her room, not a universal correction for gold paint. If your wall or lighting makes the first color read clearly, additional white may reduce the effect you want.

Let one color settle before making a dense second pass. Layering wet paint can smear edges, widen lines unpredictably, or lift the underlying stroke. Keep a scrap board nearby to check whether the marker is flowing evenly before returning to the wall.
Preserve the “messy doodle” character without losing control
Linauer liked imperfect, doodle-like lines. You can achieve that look by varying small details—short doubled strokes, slightly uneven leaf veins, or occasional gaps—while keeping the major stems and flower silhouettes legible. Randomly changing the scale of major elements will make the mural look misaligned rather than hand drawn.

For filled flowers or leaves, HGTV recommends small artist brushes for edges and intricate areas, larger brushes or a small foam roller for broad areas, painting one color at a time, and allowing coats to dry. Pencil or chalk guides can be wiped away with a damp rag after the paint has dried, provided the wall finish tolerates that cleaning. Those brush-based instructions are useful alternatives, but they do not prove that a marker mural will have the same durability.

Surface, drying, and finish precautions
The project’s exact wall-paint color is not stated in the progress post; it was custom color matched and shown through a formula image. Because the underlying coating is unspecified in text, do not assume that every acrylic or water-based marker will bond identically to it. Test the marker and any cleaning method in an inconspicuous area before covering the feature wall.

The post ends before confirming a clear finish. Linauer thought a protective coat might be needed over the water-based white marker and planned to spray a flat General Finishes High Performance Topcoat because brushing or rolling could disturb the design. The account does not establish that she applied it, that it was compatible, or that it improved washability. If you consider a clear coat, follow the finish manufacturer’s current label, test over a fully cured sample, and use spray precautions appropriate to your space.
Troubleshooting common transfer problems
The projected image is too small
Move the projector farther from the wall if the room allows, or reduce the artwork’s projected section and transfer the mural in multiple aligned panels. Do not stretch the image digitally in one direction to force a fit; that changes flower proportions.
The image is too dim to trace
Darken the room, reduce competing light, clean the projector lens, and increase contrast in the source artwork before printing a new transparency. A faint guide encourages guessing, which compounds when sections are joined.
Section joins do not line up
Stop before applying marker to the mismatch. Reproject a previous landmark, measure the distance from a fixed wall feature, and redraw the connection. If the discrepancy is small, convert the join into a natural stem fork or leaf overlap rather than forcing two incompatible lines together.

The gold looks too dark or yellow
Make a small test overlay with the white marker after the gold has dried. Linauer preferred loose white strokes with some gold showing, but the amount of overlay should be judged under the room’s actual lighting. A different gold, a thinner line, or a non-metallic color may be a better correction than covering the whole design.
The marker skips or beads
Stop and inspect the wall for dust, grease, or a coating that resists the marker. Clean only with a method safe for the existing paint, allow the area to dry, and prime or repaint a test patch if necessary. Do not scrub a finished line in an attempt to improve adhesion.
What “Part 1 – Progress” can and cannot tell you
Linauer estimated that the remaining white marker work would take about 90 minutes. That was her contemporaneous estimate for that project, not a general completion time. Your duration will depend on wall height, the number of projector moves, line density, drying intervals, and how much freehand correction is required.
The documented result supports a practical conclusion: projection can make a large floral composition achievable while leaving room for expressive, imperfect linework. It does not establish final longevity, washability, or a tested protective system. Treat the first section as a controlled sample, evaluate it at normal viewing distance and lighting, and only then continue across the wall.
