Match your embroidery transfer method to the fabric: trace through sheer cloth, use contrasting paper on opaque fabric, or choose stabilizer for difficult surfaces.

The right way to transfer an embroidery pattern depends on whether your fabric is see-through, opaque, dark, textured, or safe to iron. Trace through lightweight cloth, use contrasting transfer paper on opaque fabric, or use a suitable stabilizer when the surface is difficult to mark. Test your chosen marking and removal method on a scrap first.

Which transfer method works for your fabric?

Fabric or need Good starting method What to check
Lightweight, see-through fabric Trace through the fabric at a bright window or on a lightbox. The pattern must be visible through the cloth. Chalk or a water-soluble pencil are possible marking choices. Sulky’s tracing guidance
Opaque, pale fabric Blue embroidery transfer paper. Check that the line shows and can be removed from a scrap. DMC’s transfer-paper instructions
Opaque, dark fabric Yellow embroidery transfer paper. Visibility depends on the fabric’s shade and surface, so test first. DMC’s transfer-paper instructions
Light or medium fabric needing drawn lines A water-soluble embroidery transfer pen. DMC specifies light and medium-colored fabric and says its blue, non-permanent marks can be removed with a damp cloth or cold water. Follow the product directions. DMC’s pen details
Heat-tolerant fabric and a permanent transfer An iron-on transfer pen. Mirror the design before transferring. The maker describes the result as permanent; heat can damage unsuitable cloth. Sulky’s pen details and transfer instructions
Thin, textured, coarse-weave, stretch, or napped fabric A suitable stabilizer, including water-soluble stabilizer where appropriate. Choose by fabric and follow that stabilizer’s stitch-through and removal instructions. Embroidery transfer methods from the Embroiderers’ Guild of America and Brother’s embroidery guidance

How to transfer the pattern

  1. Prepare the pattern. Print or display it at the intended size. If using an iron-on pen, make a mirror image before tracing; otherwise the transferred design will be reversed. Sulky’s instructions
  2. Inspect the fabric. Consider its color, opacity, texture, stretch, and heat tolerance. Brother recommends stabilizer for stretch, lightweight, coarse-weave, or pattern-shrinking fabric, and water-soluble stabilizer for thin fabrics such as organdy or lawn and napped fabrics such as towel or corduroy. Brother’s embroidery manual
  3. Choose a method that fits the surface. Trace only if you can see the pattern through the cloth. On opaque fabric, choose transfer paper with a contrasting color. For difficult-to-trace surfaces, consider a suitable stabilizer. Sulky’s tracing guidance, DMC’s paper instructions, and the Embroiderers’ Guild of America’s methods
  4. Test on a scrap. Check line visibility, smearing, heat response, and whether the mark comes out as directed. Product guidance applies to the specific product, not every combination of marker, fabric, and dye.
  5. Transfer with light, controlled marks. Trace only as heavily as needed. Follow the product’s directions for tracing, applying heat, stitching through stabilizer, and using water. DMC describes its transfer paper as working like carbon paper and lists four 8-by-11-inch sheets—two blue and two yellow. DMC’s transfer-paper instructions
  6. Remove marks as directed. DMC specifies a damp cloth or cold water for its water-soluble pen; for its transfer-paper marks, it suggests a soft eraser or damp cloth. Other products may have different removal instructions. DMC’s pen details and DMC’s paper instructions

How to transfer an embroidery pattern onto dark fabric

For opaque dark cloth, yellow embroidery transfer paper is a practical starting point because it can provide contrast where blue marks may not show. DMC’s paper includes yellow sheets and says marks may be removed with a soft eraser or damp cloth. The color is not guaranteed to stand out on every dark fabric or texture, so try it on a scrap before marking the project. DMC’s transfer-paper instructions

#1 Best Overall
New brothread 6PCS 8.5"x11" Sticky Water Soluble Embroidery Stabilizer
  • ★ PRINTABLE & SELF-ADHESIVE: Sticky Water Soluble Paper Stabilizer is a printable temporary self-adhesive, fabric-like stabilizer which features a strong adhesive on one side that easily sticks to the back of the fabric and prevent any shifting or sliding of the fabric during the embroidery process.
  • ★ COLD WATER SOLUBLE: Say goodbye to backing residue issues! It dissolves completely when immersed in cold or warm water leaving no backing at all. Sticky Water Soluble Paper Stabilizer is a great choice for both embroidery backing and topping. Perfect when you need an embroidery stabilizer to be disappeared.
  • ★★★ NOTES AND TIPS: When you stick the stabilizer on light color fabrics or garments to embroider, using the water erasable marking pen to draw the pattern on the stabilizer is a better choice than ink printing because the ink from your printer may not dissolve completely in the water.
  • ★ MULTI FUNCTIONS & EASY TO USE: Sticky Water Soluble Paper Stabilizer is ideal for getting your hand embroidery, needle punch, cross stitch, quilting or other patterns onto your project fabric. Print, copy, or draw your design on it; then peel off the release sheet and stick the design in place for hand or machine embroidery;then rinse away when finished!
  • ★ GREAT FOR SMALL & DELICATE FABRICS: Sticky embroidery stabilizer is great to hold small areas like pockets, cuffs, collars, socks, doll clothes, edges, cap, etc. without basting spray them. And eliminate hoop marks for napped fabrics like velvet, brushed flannel, corduroy, towel, fleece and silk, etc.

If the fabric is light enough to see through, tracing at a bright window or lightbox may work instead. For a textured or difficult-to-mark surface, consider a suitable stabilizer and follow its instructions. Sulky’s tracing guidance and Brother’s embroidery guidance

When to use an iron-on transfer pen

An iron-on pen is a separate option from removable marking pens and transfer paper. Sulky instructs users to mirror the pattern, trace it onto paper, and apply heat to transfer it; the maker describes the transfer as permanent and non-bleeding. Sulky’s product details and instructions

What to expect from the different marking products

Transfer products are not interchangeable. DMC says its blue, non-permanent pen works on light- and medium-colored fabrics and can be removed with a damp cloth or cold water. That guidance is specific to DMC’s pen, not a guarantee for other markers, fabrics, or dyes. DMC’s product details

DMC’s transfer paper comes in blue and yellow sheets; the maker recommends blue for pale fabric and yellow for darker fabric. It says marks may be removed with a soft eraser or damp cloth. Test the mark and removal method on your own fabric first. DMC’s product details
