To transfer an inkjet image to wood with Mod Podge, print it onto a stencil sheet coated with dried school glue, then press the printed image onto Mod Podge-coated wood. This is different from using Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium, which Mod Podge says requires a laser printer because inkjet ink may smear or dissolve.
What you need
- A plastic stencil sheet; transparency film is an alternative
- Ordinary PVA school glue
- Standard Mod Podge Matte, Gloss, or Satin
- A smooth wood block
- Sandpaper and a clean cloth
- An inkjet printer and the image to print
- Foam brushes
- A craft knife for scoring the edges
- Wood stain for optional finishing
Transfer an inkjet image to wood
- Prepare the wood. Sand it smooth, then wipe away the dust so the image has an even surface to adhere to.
- Coat the sheet. On the shiny side of the stencil sheet, use a foam brush to apply two thin layers of PVA school glue. Let the glue dry fully.
- Print the image. Print onto the dried glue-coated side of the sheet with an inkjet printer. If the image includes text, mirror it before printing so the final transfer reads correctly. Let the printed image dry fully before continuing.
- Apply Mod Podge to the wood. Brush a layer of standard Mod Podge onto the prepared wood.
- Place and smooth the image. Put the printed side against the Mod Podge-coated wood and smooth it gently.
- Let it dry. Leave the transfer undisturbed overnight; the tutorial recommends 24 hours. The image may not transfer cleanly if it has not dried fully.
- Peel the sheet away. Lightly score around the image edges with a craft knife, then carefully peel away the stencil sheet.
- Finish if desired. Stain the sides and back of the wood block if you want a finished look.
Inkjet transfer and Photo Transfer Medium are different methods
For the inkjet method above, the image is printed on a dried glue-coated stencil sheet and transferred with standard Mod Podge. The tutorial says this method leaves a clear background. Mod Podge Rocks’ inkjet transfer tutorial describes the sheet-based process.

Mod Podge Photo Transfer Medium uses a different process. Mod Podge’s official product guidance says a laser printer is essential for that medium because inkjet ink may smear or dissolve. Its guidance recommends thin regular printer paper rather than glossy photo paper or heavy cardstock. In a separate wood tutorial, Mod Podge Rocks uses a laser-printed image on regular paper with Photo Transfer Medium, then has the user dampen and rub away the paper after a 24-hour drying period: laser photo transfer to wood.

Tips for a cleaner transfer
- Do not skip the full drying time for either the glue coating or the printed image; the inkjet tutorial warns that an image that is not fully dry may fail to transfer cleanly.
- Keep the wood smooth and remove sanding dust before applying Mod Podge.
- Mirror text before printing; otherwise it will read backward after transfer.
- Use standard Mod Podge for the stencil-sheet inkjet method. Do not substitute Photo Transfer Medium while keeping the inkjet process: its printer compatibility and paper-removal steps are different.
