To make a dried-bean mosaic, sketch a design on sturdy paper or cardboard, arrange sorted beans over it to test the colors, then glue them down a section at a time. Let the piece dry flat before deciding whether to add paint, markers or a clear finish. For a dimensional alternative, press beans into air-dry clay or salt dough instead.

Choose a format and base

A mosaic arranges small pieces into a larger composition. As Kelsey Herber, School Programs Associate at the Fort Wayne Museum of Art, puts it, “In its most basic sense, a mosaic is created by arranging small, colored elements in a pattern that makes a larger composition.” (Fort Wayne Museum of Art)

For a first project, use a flat base: thick paper, cardstock or cardboard. A sturdier nature mosaic can use canvas, wood or plaster, as Illinois 4-H suggests. Another option is to press beans into air-dry clay or salt dough rather than gluing them to a surface.

Approach Base and attachment Drying and finish
Flat mosaic Glue beans onto thick paper, cardstock, cardboard or another sturdy surface. The Great Plains Art Museum advises drying its paper-based project flat for at least an hour or overnight. Paint, markers and a protective glue layer are optional.
Clay-backed mosaic Press beans about halfway into air-dry clay or salt dough. The Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s February 2026 activity says to dry flat for about a day, add a thin layer of clear-drying glue, then allow another day to dry.

These times are guidance for the cited activities, not universal drying guarantees. Glue, base thickness, and the finish product all affect what works; follow product directions and confirm the finish is suitable for the base.

Gather materials

  • Dried beans in a mix of colors, shapes or sizes
  • Cardstock or cardboard for a flat mosaic, or air-dry clay or salt dough for a pressed design
  • Liquid glue for a flat mosaic; clear-drying liquid glue for the clay activity’s top coat
  • Pencil and, if useful, a template
  • Small containers or a tray for sorting beans
  • Optional: a craft stick or pencil for placing beans, paint or markers, and a suitable clear sealer

The Children’s Museum of New Hampshire also includes seeds as an option alongside beans. For an owl or other template-led image, print or draw the outline before you begin.

Make a flat bean mosaic

  1. Prepare the base and sketch. Draw a simple image or pattern in pencil on cardstock or cardboard. For a broader nature mosaic, choose a sturdier base such as canvas, wood or plaster.
  2. Sort and test the layout. Separate beans by color or type, then arrange them over the sketch without glue. This preview helps you distribute colors and spot gaps. If you are following the Appleton Museum’s owl template, start at the center and work outward so the beans fit together.
  3. Glue a small section at a time. Spread liquid glue over one area, press the beans into place, and continue across the design. A small craft stick or pencil can help position individual pieces.
  4. Dry the work flat. The Great Plains Art Museum’s project guide recommends at least an hour or overnight for its paper-based activity. Let the glue set before moving or decorating the mosaic.
  5. Add color or protection if wanted. Once dry, add paint or marker details. The guide also suggests an additional layer of glue as a protective seal. Illinois 4-H describes using clear shellac or sealer for its nature mosaics; check the label for compatibility with your base and follow its instructions.

Make a clay or salt-dough mosaic

The Fort Wayne Museum of Art’s February 21, 2026 activity uses a different approach: the beans are embedded in the surface instead of glued on top.

  1. Shape the clay or dough. Keep the piece flat and leave a border around the edge so beans placed near the sides are less likely to detach.
  2. Plan the image. Arrange the beans on the surface before pressing them in, or work directly from a simple sketch.
  3. Press in the beans. Set each bean about halfway into the clay or dough. A dull tool can help press the material around a bean.
  4. Dry, coat and dry again. Herber’s activity guide recommends drying the piece flat for about a day, brushing on a thin coat of Mod Podge or another clear-drying liquid glue, then allowing another day to dry. Treat those timings as the museum’s method, and follow the directions for the materials you use.

Design ideas and color choices

Start with a simple picture

Choose an image with a clear outline and a few large areas, such as an owl. A template keeps the shape legible; sorting beans first makes it easier to assign different colors to the body, eyes or background. Work outward from the center when following the Appleton owl activity.

Make a nature or geometric pattern

For a freeform design, repeat a small palette in bands, spirals, leaves or other simple shapes. Try the layout dry before gluing so you can judge how the colors and bean sizes balance. Illinois 4-H’s nature-mosaic activity supports using a range of flat, sturdy bases for this kind of composition.

Use color without hiding the beans

Beans already offer natural variations in color and shape. If you want brighter or more controlled colors, the Great Plains Art Museum guide suggests adding paint or marker after the paper mosaic dries. These are optional additions, not required steps.

Common problems to avoid

  • Beans shift or leave gaps: Preview the arrangement before gluing, then attach a small section at a time and press each bean firmly into the adhesive.
  • The design is hard to follow: Sketch a simple outline or use a template, and sort the beans into groups before you start.
  • Edge beans come loose in a clay piece: Leave a border and press the clay around each bean; the Fort Wayne activity recommends both precautions.
  • The finish behaves unexpectedly: Test it on a small area if possible, make sure it is suitable for your base, and follow the product’s drying and application directions.
