Check condition and construction
- Push on each corner and joint. Movement indicates a repair that must happen before painting.
- Look for swelling, peeling veneer, rust, oil, wax and silicone residue; these can defeat an otherwise good finish.
- Measure the working area and the clearances around it, especially if you will add a thicker top or upholstery.
- Confirm that screws, staples or adhesive will not hit glass, wiring, plumbing or a hidden metal frame.

Do not combine every category simply because it is available. One painted colour with a restrained transfer may be more durable and coherent than a heavily layered surface.
Prepare the work area and supplies
Work in a clean, dry, well-lit area where the piece can remain undisturbed while coats cure. Protect the floor and nearby surfaces from overspray, dust and drips. Keep separate containers for dirty cleaning water, clean water and waste, and follow the label instructions for every coating.

Step 1: clean and inspect the table
Remove dust, grease and residues with degreaser, then let the timber dry fully. Tighten or repair loose joints before continuing. A clean surface lets paint bond; residue left under paint can cause fisheyes, peeling or uneven sheen.
Step 2: lightly abrade glossy areas
Use 120-grit sandpaper to dull shiny surfaces without removing sound material. Concentrate on slick coatings and feather any flaking edge. Wipe away all sanding dust. If you expose bare timber or discover a damaged veneer, stop and choose a compatible repair and primer system before painting.
Step 3: apply the colour coats
Spray two even coats of chalk-finish spray paint, allowing each coat to dry as directed on its label. Keep the can moving and overlap passes lightly to avoid runs. Thin, even coats are easier to correct than one heavy coat. Inspect from several angles after the second coat; do not rush to distress or varnish while the paint is still soft.
Step 4: distress only if it serves the design
Lightly distress selected edges if you want a worn appearance. Use restraint around corners that will receive frequent contact, because excessive abrasion can expose the substrate and create weak spots. If the desired look is clean and contemporary, skip distressing.
Step 5: protect the painted frame
Brush on water-based clear varnish after the paint has dried. Apply an even film and respect the product’s recoat and curing directions. Varnish protects against ordinary handling, but it does not make a surface immune to standing water, impact or unsuitable cleaners.

Step 6: build the upholstered panel
Place the upholstery fabric face down, then layer wadding, 60 mm foam and the 12 mm MDF panel. Keep the layers aligned. Pull the fabric and wadding evenly to the underside and staple them to the MDF, alternating opposite sides so tension stays balanced. Fold corners neatly and trim excess material only after checking that the front is smooth.
Step 7: attach the panel
Centre the upholstered panel on the table and mark the screw positions from underneath. Drill suitable pilot holes, taking care not to pierce the fabric or emerge through the top. Secure the panel with 40 mm screws and check that the head is seated without crushing the MDF. Add decorative upholstery nails with a hammer only after the panel is firmly fixed.
Step 8: inspect before use
Check every staple, screw and nail for sharp protrusions. Sit or lean on the ottoman gradually while observing the frame and attachment points. If anything shifts, remove the load and correct the fastening before normal use.
How to adapt the idea without copying the example
For a painted accent table
Use the same cleaning and light-abrasion discipline, then select a paint system labelled for the substrate. A clear coat is particularly useful on a tabletop exposed to cups and repeated wiping. Keep decorative transfers or moulds to areas that will not be constantly struck by objects.
For a decoupage panel
Paint and cure the base first. Dry-fit the paper, mark its position, and work from the centre outward to control wrinkles. Seal the entire panel, including exposed edges, with a compatible clear finish. Test the adhesive and sealer on a spare offcut or hidden area because paper, paint and varnish can react differently.
For transfers and moulds
Transfers need a dust-free, fully cured surface and deliberate placement. Mould details should be attached securely, then blended with paint so their edges do not look pasted on. Avoid relief on drawer runners, handles or narrow passages where it can interfere with movement.

Safety, ventilation and housekeeping
Follow the published project’s precautions whenever power tools or spray paint are involved:
- Wear safety glasses, a mask and earmuffs when operating power tools.
- Tie back long hair and keep loose clothing, jewellery and cords away from moving parts.
- Spray-paint in a well-ventilated area, preferably outdoors, away from ignition sources and wind that can carry overspray.
- Keep the workpiece stable before drilling or stapling, and clamp it when practical.
- Dispose of solvent- or paint-contaminated materials according to local rules; never leave them near heat.
- Allow coatings and adhesives to cure before bringing the piece into a living area.
Read the current label and safety sheet for the exact product you buy. A “water-based” varnish still requires sensible ventilation and skin protection, and a spray can’s propellant creates hazards even when the colour coat itself is water-based.
Troubleshooting common failures
Paint beads or separates
Oil, wax or silicone is probably still present, or the surface is too glossy. Clean again, let it dry and abrade lightly. Do not bury the problem under more coats.
Runs and heavy spray texture
The coat was applied too heavily or too close. Let it dry, smooth the defect carefully, remove dust and apply thinner passes with the can moving before and after each stroke.

The base may not have cured, or the edge was not burnished. Press and smooth only if the product instructions permit it; otherwise remove the failed section, clean the area and reapply after full curing.
Fabric wrinkles on the upholstered top
Uneven tension or stapling one side completely before the opposite side causes distortion. Remove enough staples to release the tension, smooth from the centre and staple opposite sides in sequence.
