A garage door that the family uses every day needs more than a hook and a pile of shoes. The most useful arrangement gives each action a home: a bench for sitting, shoe storage below, reachable hooks above, and a finish that connects the entry to the rest of the house. Tony Carrick’s 2021 Bob Vila makeover shows how that combination can convert a crowded passage into a deliberate landing area for shoes, backpacks, coats, hats and school books.

Its author had not yet lived through a full cold-weather season when he described the result, so seasonal performance remains something each household must evaluate in its own garage.
What was wrong with the original garage entry?
The garage-to-house doorway was a major route in and out of the home. Shoes and backpacks accumulated beside the door, and coats were stacked several layers deep on one hook. Adding a few more hooks and mismatched chairs did not solve the underlying problem: the family had no defined place to sit, unload, hang outerwear or contain footwear.

That diagnosis matters more than the style of the finished unit. Before buying materials, watch the doorway for a few days and list what actually lands there. In Carrick’s account, the list included shoes, backpacks, coats and school books. Another household may need space for work bags, sports equipment, umbrellas, pet gear or packages. Storage works when it follows that traffic instead of forcing the family to change it.
The three jobs a functional drop zone must handle
1. Sitting down to change shoes
A bench gives someone a stable place to sit while putting on or removing shoes. It also defines the footprint of the drop zone: storage can be planned below it, and hooks can be positioned so a seated person is not struck by hanging items.
2. Containing footwear
Open cubbies or baskets keep shoes from spreading across the walking path. The featured bench used two large open areas sized for wicker shoe baskets. Open storage makes daily drop-off quick; baskets add visual order while allowing the family to lift an entire group of shoes out for cleaning.
3. Hanging the items people grab on the way out
Hooks hold jackets, hats and scarves where they can be reached without opening a cabinet. Carrick used curved triple hooks, which provide several hanging points in the space occupied by a single-hook position. Hook quantity should follow the household’s actual coats and bags, not an assumed standard.
How the featured makeover was designed
The family chose a sizable bench with two large shoe-storage openings. Hooks were mounted high enough for adults but low enough for the author’s nine-year-old child to reach. The layout also left clearance for a person sitting on the bench, an important detail in a narrow passage.
For the visual connection to the house, the backing used beadboard framed with simple 1×6 boards. Those straightforward profiles suited the home’s modern farmhouse decor. Pre-primed boards and molding concealed rough plywood edges and helped the finished unit look built in rather than like freestanding garage furniture.

Plan the footprint before cutting anything
Measure the wall and door movement
- Measure the wall width from corner to trim, then measure the available height from floor to ceiling or to any obstruction.
- Open the garage-to-house door fully and mark its swing. Keep the bench, baskets and coats outside that arc.
- Measure the walking route when people are carrying bags. A unit that fits an empty room may feel cramped once a seated person, open door and loaded backpack occupy it.
- Locate baseboards, electrical outlets, switches and any transition between flooring materials. Decide whether the existing baseboard can be removed and reused, as Carrick did.
- Check the floor with a long level. Garage slabs often slope toward a drain or door; the Kreg garage/mudroom plan required a tapered base to compensate for a sloped floor.
Translate daily gear into storage spaces
Count the coats, bags and pairs of shoes that normally appear at the doorway. Decide which items need one-hand access and which can go into baskets or a cabinet. A child’s school bag may need a low, reachable hook; infrequently used winter boots may be better in a lower basket. These decisions determine the number and spacing of hooks more reliably than a generic diagram.

No source establishes a universally best layout, an ideal hook height or standardized durability rating. Fit the arrangement to the people using it, the wall available and the amount of garage moisture and dirt it will encounter.
Materials and construction choices from the project
Why birch plywood was selected
Carrick selected birch plywood for the bench. He rejected pine because it dents easily and reported that solid hardwood would have cost more than twice as much as plywood for his project. His exact explanation was: “Solid hardwood would more than double the project cost compared to plywood.” That is a project-specific rationale, not a market-wide price rule.

Use an appropriate edge treatment where the plies will be visible. In the featured build, pre-primed boards and molding covered rough edges and supplied a paint-ready transition between the plywood carcass and the beadboard back.
Fastening the carcass
The bench was assembled in a garage workshop with a Kreg pocket-hole jig. Pocket holes keep fasteners hidden on the inside faces and are practical for a box-shaped bench, but they still require square cuts, clamping and a plan for where each hole will be concealed. The separate Kreg garage/mudroom organizer plan is marked advanced and lists the Pocket-Hole Jig 720, circular saw, miter saw, table saw, tape measure, nail gun and sander, along with plywood, dimensional lumber, hooks and shoe storage.
Reuse what already fits
Removing and reusing the existing baseboards can make a new unit appear integrated and avoids an unnecessary mismatch at the floor. Label each piece before removal, cut the bench around fixed trim where practical, and reinstall the boards after the carcass is secured. If the floor is sloped, build or shim a tapered base before fastening the bench so the seat reads level and the doors or baskets operate properly.
Make the paint and trim do practical work
Prepare every surface for a hard-working entry
Garage entries collect grit, salt and wet debris. Vacuum and degrease the concrete and adjacent walls before painting. Fill fastener holes, sand raised plywood fibers and caulk trim joints that would otherwise trap dust. Pre-primed trim reduces preparation, but inspect factory primer for damage after cutting.

Choose a finish that can be cleaned
Use a durable interior trim or cabinet coating compatible with the primer and substrate. A low-sheen finish can hide minor scuffs while remaining wipeable; the right sheen depends on the paint system and the home’s existing trim. Paint the beadboard, 1×6 framing and bench in a coordinated color so the drop zone feels intentional rather than like an isolated garage project.
Protect the floor transition
A washable rug can visually connect the garage threshold to the house and catch grit before it reaches the interior. Leave enough clearance for the door, baskets and seated feet. If the garage regularly receives wet boots, choose a rug and shoe containers that can be lifted out and cleaned instead of relying on a delicate textile fixed beneath the bench.
Install hooks for real users, not an abstract drawing
Set the hook line after the bench height and seat clearance are confirmed. The featured family deliberately placed hooks where a nine-year-old could reach them while preserving room for someone sitting below. Mark the intended shoulder or hand-reach zone for each regular user, then check that a hanging coat will not block the seat or door.
Curved triple hooks increase capacity compared with single hooks, but capacity is only useful when the wall can support the hardware and the coats do not overlap into the walking path. Fasten through the beadboard and into framing where possible; use an appropriate anchor where framing is unavailable. Test each hook with the heaviest bag the household will routinely hang rather than relying on an unverified load rating.
Organize the finished unit so it stays usable
- Assign one hook or hook section to each regular user when possible.
- Place everyday shoes in the easiest-to-reach baskets and reserve higher or less convenient storage for occasional footwear.
- Keep a clear landing surface on the bench; do not turn the seat into a permanent shelf.
- Use labels or simple visual zones if several children share baskets.
- Leave a temporary spot for wet items until they can be dried, rather than putting damp boots into an enclosed cabinet.
The bench and shoe baskets solve different tasks: the seat supports changing shoes, while containment prevents footwear from spreading across the floor. Treating them as separate functions makes it easier to adjust one without rebuilding the other.
What other project budgets can—and cannot—tell you
Two 2026 examples show how widely individual scopes can differ. This Old House reported a Houston mini drop zone built by Emily Allison and a family member with a cabinet-grade birch-plywood storage seat, baskets borrowed from elsewhere in the home, a secondhand coatrack and a rug. Its itemized tally was $95: $65 for bench materials, $10 for the coatrack, $20 for the rug and $0 for paint because paint was already available. Allison said, “I still really love that room. I haven’t changed a thing about it!” That is her personal reaction to that separate room, not performance evidence for every drop zone.
Apartment Therapy reported a different 2026 garage-entry redo costing $500. That project combined peel-and-stick tile, a bench, cabinets and shoe shelving. Neither figure is a current quote, a standard price range or the budget for Carrick’s Bob Vila makeover. Material grade, existing tools, labor, electrical work, flooring and finish choices can change the total substantially.

Common problems and practical corrections
The bench feels too deep
Recheck the door swing and walking route with a person seated. Reduce depth or move storage to the wall before adding more hooks. A bench that blocks circulation defeats the purpose of the landing area.

Baskets are hard to remove
Measure the basket’s outside width and handle clearance, not just the opening. Leave room to pull it out while another person stands at the doorway. If wet boots are common, choose a basket that can be taken outside for cleaning.
Coats still form a pile
Count the actual outerwear and add zones rather than simply adding taller hooks. Triple hooks can increase hanging points, but they cannot compensate for a wall that is too narrow or a household that needs a separate place for bulky gear.
The unit looks like garage furniture
Align the top, side trim and baseboard with nearby interior details. Consistent paint, beadboard and simple 1×6 framing were the visual devices that helped the featured project relate to the home’s modern farmhouse style.
The floor is uneven
Do not force the bench level against a sloping slab. Build a tapered base or use carefully secured shims, then check the seat, baskets and trim before final fastening. The slope issue is specifically noted in Kreg’s organizer plan and is common enough to check early.

How to judge the result after installation
For the first weeks, observe whether shoes actually enter the baskets, whether every user can reach a hook, and whether the seat remains available for changing footwear. Adjust basket assignments and hook use before altering the carpentry. Check painted surfaces for dirt or moisture and wipe them with the cleaner recommended for the coating.
Do not declare the arrangement season-proof after a few mild weeks. Carrick’s account explicitly left cooler-weather testing ahead, including the question of how seasonal boots and outerwear would behave. Evaluate that yourself after rain, mud, snow or other conditions typical of your location.
A decision checklist before you start
- Have you listed the items that actually land beside the door?
- Will the door open fully with a seated person, baskets and hanging coats in place?
- Can the youngest regular user reach the intended hook?
- Is the bench sized for the wall, and is the floor level or ready for a tapered base?
- Will open cubbies, baskets or closed doors handle the dirt and moisture your garage receives?
- Do you have the tools and skill for plywood cuts, pocket-hole assembly, trim and finishing?
- Have you separated a reported project budget from a price estimate for your own space?
The Bottom Line
The most dependable garage-entry makeover starts with behavior: identify what lands there, then combine a seat, contained shoe storage and reachable hooks within the door’s real clearance. Birch plywood, beadboard, trim and coordinated paint can make a custom bench feel like part of the home, while a hall tree or separate hooks and baskets may be more sensible when tools, time or wall dimensions are limited. Treat the $95 and $500 examples as individual 2026 project tallies, and wait through your own wet or cold season before deciding how well the installation performs.
