You can turn a sound coffee table into an upholstered bench by using its top—or a separately cut plywood panel—as the seat base, then layering foam, batting, and upholstery fabric and stapling the layers underneath. The reliable order is: inspect and stabilize the table, measure before buying supplies, prepare the wood, fit the foam, wrap the batting, pull on the fabric, and finish the underside. Tufting, a sewn side cover, and decorative paint are optional.

Do not assume every coffee table is suitable for sitting. The project guides describe construction methods but do not publish a seating load rating or structural test. Check the table’s joints, legs, top, fasteners, and condition yourself before calling the finished piece a bench.
Decide whether the coffee table can become a seat
Start with the furniture, not the fabric. Put the table on a level floor and inspect every leg-to-apron joint, screw, dowel, bracket, and glued seam. Look for wobble, loose hardware, cracked wood, water damage, splitting around fasteners, or a top that flexes noticeably. Repair or replace damaged parts before adding upholstery; soft foam will hide a problem rather than solve it.

Consider how the legs transfer force to the floor. A table that rocks, has a severely overhanging top, or relies on a damaged frame is a poor candidate. Tighten accessible fasteners, repair appropriate joints, and recheck that the frame sits evenly. The tutorials used for this project do not establish a universal safe load, so your inspection is the basis for deciding whether the piece is for occasional light sitting, a footrest, or decoration only.
Choose the upholstery base
If the existing top is flat, firmly attached, and the right outline for your design, it can serve as the upholstery base. Keeping it in place saves a cutting step and preserves the table’s shape. If the top is unsuitable, too thin, damaged, or you want a different overhang, make a new seat panel from plywood. The documented plywood method traces the table profile onto the sheet and cuts a panel to fit.
Pick a finish before you buy supplies
| Decision | Simpler option | More tailored option | What changes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Seat base | Use the existing table top | Trace and cut a plywood panel | A new panel gives you a fresh, predictable upholstery surface but adds cutting and fitting work. |
| Fabric construction | Wrap one piece over the top and staple below | Sew a top and side cover | A wrapped top avoids side seams; a sewn cover requires more measuring, sewing, and careful corner work. |
| Surface style | Flat cushion | Button tufting | Tufting adds marked button positions, a long upholstery needle, and cords or fasteners secured beneath the seat. |
| Wood treatment | Clean and leave the frame as found | Sand, paint, or refinish before upholstery | Painting is easiest before the padded top is installed and protects the visible frame from messy finishing work. |
A simple wrapped top is the best first build because it lets you concentrate on even tension and neat corners. A sewn cover is useful when you want a fitted edge, while tufting is a decorative choice rather than a structural requirement.
Materials and tools
Buy quantities only after measuring your specific table or panel. The following items recur in the documented projects; thicknesses and amounts are examples from those projects, not universal specifications.
| Item | Purpose and documented guidance |
|---|---|
| Upholstery foam | Creates the cushion. One project lists 3-inch high-density foam; another uses 2-inch high-density foam. Choose thickness to suit your intended profile and available clearance rather than treating either figure as a standard. |
| Polyester batting | Softens the foam edge and smooths the transition under the fabric. A twin-size hi-loft batting piece appears in one supply list. |
| Upholstery fabric | Forms the visible cover. One project lists three yards, but your dimensions, pattern repeat, side panels, and matching requirements may change the amount. |
| Plywood | Conditional: use it when the original top is not the seat base. Another tutorial uses a 1/2-inch panel. |
| Staple gun and staples | Secures batting and fabric to the underside. A manual gun with 3/8-inch staples is one documented choice; confirm that your staples do not penetrate the base or emerge through the top. |
| Adhesive | Upholstery spray adhesive can hold foam in position while you wrap the assembly. It is optional and method-dependent. |
| Cutting tools | A serrated bread knife or an electric knife can cut foam. A drill/driver is useful for a plywood panel or tufting preparation. |
| Measuring and marking tools | Tape measure, straightedge, pencil, and a way to mark button positions. |
| Tufting supplies | Optional buttons, cord or suitable fasteners, and a long upholstery needle. Use these only if you are making a tufted top. |
| Fabric-removal and finishing supplies | A staple remover helps correct mistakes. Sandpaper, primer, and paint or other finish are conditional on the look you want. |
The cited examples do not establish a universal foam density, fabric yardage, staple length, or foam thickness. Treat every number above as a project-specific choice and verify your measurements first.

Measure the table and plan the material layout
- Record the seat outline. Measure the maximum length and width of the top. For an irregular or rounded table, trace the outline on paper or directly onto cardboard so a plywood panel and the foam follow the same profile.
- Account for the complete height. Note the existing top thickness, planned foam thickness, batting loft, and fabric wrap. Check that the resulting seat will not interfere with drawers, doors, leg braces, or a desired knee clearance.
- Plan the underside return. Fabric and batting must extend past every edge far enough to turn under the base and accept staples. Corners, curves, and any notches around legs consume extra material.
- Plan pattern direction. If the fabric has stripes, a directional print, or a repeat, orient the design before cutting. Matching a repeat or adding a sewn side cover can require more yardage than a plain, one-piece wrap.
- Make a cutting template when needed. For a separate panel, trace the table profile onto plywood, mark the front and back, and check the traced shape against the frame before cutting.
Build the upholstered bench step by step
1. Prepare and refinish the table
Remove dust, loose finish, and hardware that would interfere with the new seat. If you are painting or creating a faux-weathered look, complete sanding and finishing while the top is still accessible. The documented projects include sanding before painting and, in another case, painting followed by a faux-weathered finish. Allow the finish to become firm enough for handling before you attach the padded assembly.

2. Make and fit a plywood seat panel, if required
Place your traced outline on the plywood and cut carefully. Test the panel on the table before adding any upholstery: it should sit flat, follow the intended overhang, and avoid rocking. Mark the panel’s front so the fabric pattern and any tufting layout stay oriented correctly. If the original top is suitable, skip this step and use that top as the base.
3. Cut the foam to the seat shape
Transfer the panel or top outline to the foam. A serrated bread knife or electric knife can make a cleaner cut than a smooth kitchen knife. Keep the blade vertical around the perimeter so the sidewall does not taper unintentionally. Dry-fit the foam on the base and correct high spots before covering it.
4. Hold the foam in place
Some documented methods use upholstery spray adhesive; others simply wrap the foam assembly onto the base. If you use adhesive, apply it according to its label and allow the bond to become tacky as directed. The goal is to prevent the foam from shifting while you pull the batting and fabric, not to make the cushion impossible to remove.
5. Add batting and staple it underneath
Lay the batting over the foam with enough overhang to reach the underside. Start at the center of one side, pull the batting just snug, and place a staple. Move to the center of the opposite side, then the centers of the remaining sides. Continue alternating sides so tension spreads evenly instead of drawing the padding toward one edge.

Work toward the corners, smoothing the top as you go. Trim bulky excess, fold the corner neatly, and keep staples in a consistent underside zone. Around legs or braces, make small, controlled notches only where the material must pass; the HGTV method specifically addresses notching around legs. Avoid cutting so deeply that the batting pulls away from the cushion edge.
6. Wrap and staple the upholstery fabric
Place the fabric face down on a clean surface and center the padded base on it. Check the pattern from the front and sides before making a cut. Repeat the center-first sequence used for the batting: one staple in the middle of a side, the opposite side, then the other two sides. Pull evenly, not aggressively; excessive force can distort a woven pattern or compress one edge.
After the four sides are anchored, work toward the corners in short sections. Keep the top smooth and the underside orderly. Fold corners into a consistent pleat or envelope fold, depending on the table shape, and staple the fold where it will not show. Trim excess fabric only after you are satisfied with the tension. A staple remover lets you correct a wrinkle before it becomes permanent.
7. Choose between a wrapped edge and a sewn cover
For the fastest finish, stop with the wrapped top and a neatly covered underside. If you want a fitted look, measure the foam perimeter and make a top panel plus side strips or a complete sewn cover. The HGTV project demonstrates a sewn fabric side cover in addition to stapling material beneath the top. Sewing adds seam allowances, corner matching, and extra opportunities for the fabric to twist, so lay out the pieces and verify their orientation before stitching.
8. Secure the completed seat to the table
Set the upholstered panel on the frame and confirm that it is centered, stable, and clear of moving parts. Use an attachment method appropriate to your table’s construction so the seat cannot slide during normal use. Keep fasteners short enough to avoid emerging through the upholstered surface, and inspect the underside for sharp points.

Optional button tufting
Tufting creates depressions that hold the fabric in a pattern, but it is not needed for a comfortable padded bench. If you choose it, mark button locations on the bare fabric or on a measured template before you cut or sew the cover. Keep the layout symmetrical with the seat outline and any directional pattern.
- Mark every button position and transfer those marks through the foam and base.
- Prepare the button-and-cord or button-fastener system described by your chosen method. The documented projects use a long needle and secure the attachment beneath the seat.
- Pass the needle through the marked point, pull the fabric into the intended depression, and anchor the cord or fastener firmly underneath.
- Complete all buttons before finalizing the outer edge, then recheck that the fabric remains centered and the folds point consistently toward the underside.
Because tufting removes some of the foam’s surface height at each button, plan the finished profile before buying material. Keep the underside attachments flat and covered so they cannot catch on flooring or clothing.
Common problems and fixes
Wrinkles remain on top
Release staples near the affected area, smooth the fabric from the center outward, and restaple in alternating sides. If the wrinkle follows a corner, the excess may need a cleaner fold rather than more tension.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe pattern leans or the stripes drift
Remove enough staples to recenter the fabric before trimming. Always judge alignment from the front and sides; a top that looks centered from above can still be skewed on the frame.
The edge feels lumpy
Check for uneven foam cuts, folded batting, or a thick fabric bundle trapped under the edge. Level the foam first, then spread the batting and reduce bulk at corners.

Staples will not hold
Confirm that you are stapling into solid wood or plywood, not a thin veneer, hollow area, or gap. Short staples may fail to grip; overly long staples can protrude through the top. Correct the base or staple choice before covering the area again.
The finished bench rocks
Remove the seat and correct the frame or leg contact points. Upholstery should not be used to shim a structural defect. Recheck the table on a level floor before anyone sits on it.

Care, inspection, and practical limits
Vacuum or brush the fabric gently and treat spills according to the fabric maker’s care instructions. Periodically look underneath for loose staples, pulled fabric, or cords that have loosened. Check the legs and joints after the first uses and whenever the bench is moved. Keep the piece on a surface where a shifting leg will be easy to notice, and do not let children climb or bounce on it.
The finished object is a repurposed piece whose performance depends on the original table, the new panel if used, the fasteners, and your workmanship. Present it honestly as an upholstered coffee-table conversion rather than relying on a generic bench capacity that the project instructions do not provide.
A practical build sequence
For a dependable first attempt, use this order: stabilize the table; decide whether to retain the top; measure and buy materials; refinish the exposed wood; cut and test-fit the panel and foam; secure the foam; wrap and staple batting; align, tension, and staple fabric; add a sewn cover or tufting only if the design warrants it; then attach and inspect the completed seat. This sequence keeps irreversible cuts and upholstery decisions tied to the actual dimensions of your table.
