A dated brass wall sconce can become a gentle French-inspired accent with paint, dark wax and hanging glass beads. The documented makeover keeps the original fixture and changes its surface and ornament: clean it, build a warm white finish, add gray and wax to the raised details, then attach teardrop beads. It does not include rewiring, socket repair or proof that an old fixture is electrically safe.

What this 1980s brass sconce makeover actually does
This project is a decorative refinish rather than a full fixture restoration. The starting point is a pair of thrifted brass sconces dating from the 1980s. The author painted the metal, shaded its ornament and added dangling glass so the pair would flank a dining-room window. The result was described as soft and refined, which is a personal design assessment rather than a measured performance claim.

The work documented at Unigumushane’s 1980s brass French sconce tutorial does not cover stripping the brass, polishing it, sealing the paint, replacing sockets, rewiring, mounting to a wall or testing the finished installation. Treat those as separate jobs that may require an electrician or another qualified professional.

The source uses a short list of readily found supplies. It gives categories rather than brands, formulas, bead dimensions or a shopping list of exact products.

Because the warm white is only described as similar to “Raw Silk,” do not assume a particular paint product is an exact match. Choose a sample whose undertone suits your room and test it on an inconspicuous area if the existing finish or metal shows through.
Safety before you touch a vintage fixture
Painting cannot make a vintage sconce electrically safe. If it is hardwired, switch off the circuit breaker before handling it. For a lamp-style fixture, unplug it first. The Electrical Safety Foundation International advises testing conductors before touching them and recommends a qualified, licensed electrician for home electrical work; it also says not to attempt work beyond your skill level. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission identifies those signs as possible overheating hazards and says the fixture should remain out of use until a qualified electrician corrects the problem. Its home wiring hazards guide also warns that a bulb with a wattage above the fixture’s rating can cause overheating, so check the socket and bulb rating before use.
The makeover source itself directs readers who are unfamiliar with electrical wiring to contact an electrician. Keep the decorative steps below separate from any decision to remove, wire or reinstall the sconce.

Step-by-step painting and embellishment process
1. Clean the sconces
Remove surface dirt and residue so the paint can cover evenly. The documented sequence starts with cleaning; it does not specify a stripping chemical, sanding schedule or other method. If the fixture has loose parts, damaged sockets or wiring concerns, stop the cosmetic work and arrange an inspection before proceeding.
2. Apply two coats of white paint
Paint the cleaned sconce with two even coats of white paint. Let each coat dry fully before applying the next. The author used a warm white close in character to “Raw Silk,” but no precise color formula or product match is established. Work the paint into the body and ornament without flooding details that you plan to shade later.

3. Dry-brush gray onto raised details
Once the white is dry, load only a small amount of gray on the medium artist brush and remove excess before touching the fixture. Lightly skim the raised decoration so gray catches the high points and leaves the white visible underneath. This dry-brushing stage creates shadow and texture without turning the whole sconce gray.
4. Add a thin dark-wax accent
Use the brush to dry-brush a restrained layer of dark wax, concentrating on crevices and ornate recesses. The goal is an aged accent that defines the pattern. Keep the layer thin; the source does not call for a heavy, opaque coating or a specific cure time.
5. Decide how to finish the separate beads
Prepare the glass teardrop beads or chandelier pendants independently from the metal body. You can paint them so they coordinate with the white-and-gray finish, or leave them clear so they catch and reflect the room’s existing light. The tutorial does not give bead dimensions, so select pieces that can hang without striking the wall, shade or nearby trim.

6. Thread, attach and trim
Thread the beads onto jewelry wire or fishing line. Attach the strands to the sconce arms, then trim away excess material. Keep attachment points neat and check that each drop hangs freely. The source does not prescribe a knot, gauge, hardware type or spacing, so adapt the attachment to the holes or openings already present in your particular fixture rather than forcing a bead onto a part that was not designed for it.
How to make the finish look intentional
The order matters because each layer has a distinct job. White establishes the base, gray catches raised relief, and dark wax settles the deepest ornament. Reversing those steps can obscure the relief that makes the antiquing readable. Apply the gray and wax sparingly enough that the warm white remains the dominant color.
Use the same approach on both sconces if you are making a pair. Lay them side by side while working so the dry-brushed highlights and wax concentration stay visually related. They do not need to be mechanically identical, but large differences in bead length or wax density can make the pair look mismatched.
Hardwired fixture or a separate wireless design?
An existing hardwired sconce can retain its original electrical arrangement, but cosmetic painting does not verify that arrangement. Any removal, wiring, testing or wall installation belongs with a qualified electrician when you are not trained for it.
A wireless or decorative sconce is a different design path, not an automatic conversion for this brass fixture. A related tutorial from Robyn’s French Nest shows vintage lights paired with a French cleat and puck lights and mentions a 7/8-inch Forstner bit in that project. Those mounting and lighting parts were not assessed for the brass sconce described here. Do not assume that its cleat, hole size or puck-light arrangement will fit your fixture or wall.

What the project cost and where to find a starting fixture
The author reports paying $3 per sconce and about $8 for the makeover because paint and wax were already on hand. That is one project account, not a current price guide or a general budget. Your total will change with the condition of the fixture, the amount of paint and wax you need, bead quantity and whether an electrician is required.
The tutorial suggests looking at thrift stores, antique shops and online marketplaces for brass sconces. It does not identify a specific seller or confirm current inventory. Before buying, inspect the silhouette, ornament and arm openings that could accept wire or line. Also look for obvious electrical warning signs; a low purchase price is not a reason to use a damaged fixture.
Common problems and practical fixes
The white coat looks streaky
Uneven coverage usually means the first coat was asked to do too much. Allow it to dry fully, then apply the second even coat specified by the project. Avoid correcting wet paint with extra brushing, which can pull the surface and emphasize marks.
The gray overwhelms the ornament
Dry-brushing should place color mainly on raised details. Remove more paint from the brush and use lighter passes so the warm white remains visible. If a highlight becomes too strong while the layer is still workable, soften it with the base color after the area has dried.

The source calls for a thin dark-wax layer focused on crevices. Concentrate the brush in recesses instead of spreading wax across broad flat areas. Build definition gradually; a heavy coat can hide the gray and white contrast.

The beads look too busy
Try clear beads for a lighter, more transparent effect, or reduce visual contrast by painting the beads to coordinate with the sconce. Because no bead dimensions are provided, compare the drops against the arm length before threading the entire set.
The two sconces do not match
Work in parallel: apply the same number of white coats, use similar gray passes and repeat the wax treatment at corresponding details. Hang the beads temporarily before trimming so you can adjust the pair’s visual balance.
What is—and is not—established about the finished result
The documented outcome is aesthetic: the author considered the refinished pair soft and refined and placed them around a dining-room window. That description does not establish brightness, durability, load capacity, electrical compliance or suitability for every brass fixture. Different brass alloys, ornament, existing coatings and wiring conditions can change how a particular sconce responds.

Use this makeover when your goal is a surface transformation with a small amount of movable glass detail. Treat electrical inspection, repair and installation as separate decisions, and stop using any fixture that shows overheating symptoms until a qualified electrician has addressed them.
