You can turn a winter-landscape printable into substantial wall decor without commissioning a custom painting. The most reproducible approach is to mount a trimmed paper print to plywood, wrap the edges, and add stained lattice as a shallow frame. In the documented example, a horizontal image becomes a 36-inch square on a 35-inch plywood panel, with the paper overhang folded around the edges.
The result depends less on carpentry than on decisions made before you print: identify the exact artwork, confirm its reuse terms and pixel dimensions, choose the final crop, and verify that a printer can produce the required size. The plywood-and-lattice build is one option; stretched or framed canvas may be better when you want a finished, frameless display or less hands-on work.

Plan the artwork before ordering a print
Start with the wall and the finished dimensions, not with a printer’s default paper size. The source tutorial began with a large horizontal “blueprint” print, then trimmed the image to a 36-inch square. That crop changes the composition: details near the left and right edges may be lost, while a broad landscape can gain a more centered, poster-like presentation.
Set the final aspect ratio
Decide whether your piece will remain horizontal, become square, or use another ratio. Make a crop in an image editor or on a printed test sheet before paying for a large format. Record the finished width and height, then design the panel around those measurements. A printer can often enlarge a file, but enlargement cannot restore detail that is absent from the original pixels.
Check the exact file and its rights
The tutorial identifies the image as Ernest Lawson’s “Harlem Valley Winter,” but similarly named Lawson works are separate collection records. The National Gallery of Art lists Boathouse, Winter, Harlem River; the Smithsonian’s Hirshhorn lists Harlem River in Winter (circa 1907); and The Metropolitan Museum of Art lists Winter (1914). Their records describe public-domain media or unrestricted Open Access use, but those statements do not prove that any one of them is the exact file used in the tutorial.

Save the record’s title, artist, date, and access statement with your project files. A public-domain designation concerns copyright status; it does not guarantee that a downloaded scan has enough resolution for a 36-inch print. Inspect the pixel dimensions and look at a 100-percent crop for brushwork, textural edges, and compression artifacts before ordering.
Use resolution guidance in context
Some print sellers publish a 300-DPI file specification. That is a requirement or recommendation for that seller’s products, not evidence that the Bless’er House printable itself is 300 DPI or that every 36-inch print will be equally sharp. Ask the printer how it handles files below its preferred resolution and request a proof or a small section when image detail is critical.

Choose a display route
Paper mounted to plywood gives you control over the frame and can be economical, but it requires cutting, adhesive work, and hardware. Canvas routes reduce fabrication. The following comparison reflects the material distinctions described by a seller-specific wall-art guide; sizes, surfaces, and included finishing vary by provider.
| Route | What you receive | Advantages | Trade-offs to check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Paper print plus DIY plywood | Loose paper print that you mount and frame yourself | Choose your own wood color, edge treatment, and final dimensions; paper can keep the print portion of the budget down | Requires saws, adhesive, smoothing, edge wrapping, and hanging hardware; paper can crease or bubble during mounting |
| Stretched canvas | Canvas stretched over a wooden frame, usually without an outer frame | Ready-to-hang, frameless appearance | Surface texture, gallery-wrap depth, available sizes, and edge printing differ by seller |
| Framed canvas | Canvas mounted and placed in an external frame | Finished presentation without building a frame | Higher finishing cost is common; frame color, glazing, weight, and size limits vary |
Compare each quote using the same checklist: maximum finished size, the file’s aspect ratio, crop requirements, paper or canvas surface, whether glazing is included, total weight, hanging method, local pickup or delivery, and the complete cost of print plus finishing. A material that appears cheaper can become less so after framing, shipping, or custom hardware.
Order and prepare the large print
Understand the tutorial’s historical printer path
In the January 8, 2020 tutorial, updated February 12, 2022, Lauren of Bless’er House says she ordered a large color blueprint through Staples using a 36-by-48-inch order path. She notes that local availability varied and names Office Depot and OvernightPrints as alternatives. Those directions are historical and location-dependent; confirm current dimensions, paper choices, color settings, file formats, turnaround, and pickup options before you submit an order.
The same tutorial suggests printing the file at home at 8 by 10 inches or smaller when the goal is a conventional frame. That small-format suggestion is not a substitute for checking a file intended for oversized display. For a large piece, request the exact finished dimensions you planned, or order oversized and trim only when the crop and bleed are deliberate.
Prepare a print checklist
- Open the final file and verify width, height, orientation, and pixel dimensions.
- Set the crop with the important horizon, figures, or architectural edges safely inside the trim line.
- Ask whether the printer will scale to fit, crop to fill, or add white borders; choose one explicitly.
- Confirm color mode and whether the service makes automatic color corrections. Keep an unaltered master file so you can compare a proof.
- Have the print shipped flat or rolled according to the provider’s packaging options, and let a rolled sheet relax on a clean surface before mounting.
Build the plywood-and-lattice wall art
This is the documented example’s sequence, adapted as a reproducible plan rather than a universal specification. The tutorial describes the project as beginner friendly, but it does not test tool safety, adhesive longevity, print permanence, or the load rating of its hanging system. Use the saw, spray adhesive, nails, eye hooks, and wire according to their manufacturers’ instructions and your local safety requirements.

Gather supplies
- Large color print
- Tape measure, pencil, and scissors
- 1/2-inch plywood
- Four 1/4-inch lattice strips
- Circular saw or miter saw
- Nail gun and suitable nails
- Stain and brush
- Spray adhesive compatible with paper and wood
- An old credit card or similar smooth-edged card
- Eye hooks and picture-hanging wire
1. Establish the panel and overhang
Trim or mark the print as a 36-inch square. Measure and mark the plywood at 35 inches, then cut the panel. That one-inch total difference leaves about a half-inch of paper beyond each plywood edge. The overhang is functional: it gives you material to fold around the sides before the lattice is attached.
Recommended Free Tools
Dry-fit the print on the panel before applying anything. Check that the overhang is reasonably even and that the image is square to the wood. If the paper is not centered, correct the marks now; adhesive makes later repositioning difficult.
2. Apply adhesive in sections
Protect the work area and follow the spray adhesive’s specified ventilation, distance, and open time. The tutorial applies adhesive to the plywood in sections rather than spraying the entire board at once. Lay the print down progressively, rolling or lowering it onto the coated area while keeping the alignment marks visible.
As each section contacts the adhesive, smooth from the center toward the edges with the old credit card. Slow, overlapping passes push air outward and reduce bubbles. Do not stretch the paper aggressively; stretching can pull the crop out of square and create puckers when humidity changes. If a bubble remains, follow the adhesive maker’s instructions rather than flooding the area with more spray.
3. Prepare the lattice frame
Cut four lattice strips to fit the plywood edges. The source uses 1/4-inch lattice and stains the strips before installation. Test the stain on an offcut, then coat the visible faces and allow them to dry fully according to the stain label. Pre-finishing keeps wet stain away from the print and makes it easier to handle the narrow pieces.

4. Wrap the paper and nail the strips
Fold the paper overhang around each plywood edge, keeping the corners flat rather than bunching the paper. Position the stained lattice over the wrapped edges so it forms a simple frame. Nail the strips in place with a nail gun and nails appropriate for the combined lattice and plywood thickness. Check the nail path and keep fasteners clear of the visible image area.
5. Add the hanging hardware
Attach eye hooks to the back and connect picture-hanging wire between them, as in the tutorial. Place the hooks symmetrically and leave enough wire slack for the intended hanging angle. Before lifting the finished piece, verify that the hooks, wire, nails, wall anchors, and wall surface are each rated for the completed weight. A 1/2-inch plywood panel, print, lattice, and hardware can weigh more than a paper poster, so choose anchors for your wall type rather than relying on a small nail by default.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Control the finish and protect the image
The paper surface is part of the look: it can show a more graphic, painterly texture than canvas, but it is also more vulnerable to dents, moisture, and abrasion. Keep the work away from damp walls, radiators, and direct sunlight. If you add glazing, confirm that the frame depth accommodates the plywood and that the glazing does not press against the print. Glass or acrylic changes glare, weight, and the type of hanging hardware required.
Do not assume that spray adhesive makes the assembly archival. The tutorial reports the technique but does not establish long-term bond strength or color permanence. For a high-value original or a display in challenging humidity, consult a framer about reversible mounting and conservation-grade materials instead of treating this DIY method as preservation advice.
Budget the project realistically
Lauren’s tutorial reports spending “less than $50” on her project and says she encountered art priced at “$1,200” while searching. Both figures are her historical, self-reported experience from the 2020 article (updated in 2022), not a current average or a promise that your project will match either number. Lumber, lattice, adhesive, print size, delivery, stain, and hardware prices vary by region and date.

Build your own estimate in separate lines: digital file or licensing (if any), large-format print, plywood, lattice, saw or tool rental, stain, adhesive, nails, eye hooks, wire, wall anchors, glazing or an outer frame, and delivery. Compare that total with quotes for stretched and framed canvas at the same finished dimensions. The relevant question is not simply which material has the lowest print price; it is which route gives the surface, weight, edge treatment, and labor level you actually want.
Troubleshoot common problems
The crop cuts off important content
Return to the original aspect ratio and make a smaller test crop before reordering. A horizontal composition forced into a square will always sacrifice width unless the file has generous margins.
The print is soft or pixelated
Check the source file’s pixel dimensions and the printer’s scaling settings. A seller’s 300-DPI recommendation cannot increase missing detail. If the exact museum file is too small, choose a smaller finished size or a different display route rather than sharpening artifacts until they become visible.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsBubbles appear under the paper
Work in smaller adhesive sections, lower the paper gradually, and smooth from the center outward as you go. For a bubble that has already set, consult the adhesive instructions; cutting or injecting material can leave a permanent mark.
The paper edge will not fold neatly
Recheck that the plywood is one inch smaller than the print in both dimensions. Uneven overhang is harder to hide under lattice. Make shallow, careful relief cuts at the corners only if needed, keeping the cut away from the visible face.
The finished panel feels unsafe on the wall
Weigh the completed piece, inspect every fastener, and select wall anchors rated above that load for your wall construction. If the panel is large, use a second hanging point or a cleat system recommended by a hardware professional instead of improvising with undersized wire.
When the DIY method is the right choice
Choose the plywood build when you want a square, substantial object, control over stain and frame depth, and are comfortable doing careful adhesive and cutting work. Choose stretched canvas when a lightweight, frameless presentation matters more than a paper surface. Choose framed canvas or a conventional frame when you want the finishing and hardware handled for you. In every case, settle the crop, file identity, resolution, and current print availability before committing money to the final dimensions.
