Turn a sturdy freestanding wooden coat rack into a hanging plant stand by replacing two hooks with outdoor plant-hanger brackets, anchoring the rack to a wooden base, and starting with a light basket. Donna Williams of Funky Junk Interiors describes the upcycle in a July 8, 2026 tutorial. The method is adaptable for a porch or deck, but it has no published load rating, so the rack, fasteners, base, and planter must be evaluated together before anything is hung.

What you are building
The coat rack becomes the vertical support for one or more hanging points. Two existing hooks on opposite sides are removed and replaced with metal plant-hanger brackets set at different heights. The other two original hooks can remain, preserving the rack’s character and giving it a useful mix of old and new hardware. A small basket hangs from a bracket; an optional round sign can occupy another bracket as decoration.

This is an upcycling project rather than a tested structural system. The tutorial does not publish a safe working load, bracket rating, wind rating, or test result. A rack that feels solid indoors may loosen outdoors, and a saturated planter is much heavier than an empty basket. Treat the first installation as a light-load trial and increase weight only after the anchored rack has remained stable.
Materials and tools
| Item | How it is used | Notes from the tutorial |
|---|---|---|
| Freestanding wooden coat rack | Main upright structure | A weathered rack with existing patina can be cleaned and retained rather than completely refinished. |
| Two outdoor plant-hanger brackets | Replacement hanging points | They may be different styles; install them at different heights and match the fasteners to the rack material. |
| Cordless drill and suitable bits | Removing hardware, predrilling, and fastening | Choose bits for the screw size and for wood or metal as appropriate. |
| 10–12-inch wooden round or small outdoor sign | Optional decorative panel | Williams reused a 10-inch cheese-box lid and attached it to a bracket after stenciling it. |
| Stencil supplies and paint | Optional sign or rack decoration | The sign and paint are not structural requirements. |
| Exterior wood protectant | Seals exposed wood for outdoor placement | The printable list names Olympic WaterGuard clear; follow the current label for preparation, coats, drying, and retreatment. |
| Screws and suitable anchors | Connect the rack base to a wooden deck or other stable wood | Exact sizes are not specified because the rack and base vary. |
| Lightweight hanging basket | Initial plant container | The tutorial deliberately uses a smaller basket to limit the load. |
The tutorial’s materials list also names Fusion Mineral Paint in Coal Black. That is an example of the author’s finish choice, not a required product or a performance comparison. No project cost is established; a salvaged rack, leftover sign material, and existing hardware can change the total substantially.
Check the rack before you drill
Inspect the structure
Reject or repair a rack with loose joints, active rot, deep cracks, badly split legs, or a base so narrow that it tips when lightly pushed. Check every connection, including the post-to-base joint and the areas around the hooks. Tighten or repair the rack before adding brackets; screws driven into weak wood will not create a sound connection.
Plan the load path
Trace the weight from the plant, wet growing medium, and basket into the bracket, then into the rack and finally into the deck or other base. Brackets should land on sound material rather than a thin decorative panel or a split edge. Leave enough clearance for leaves, watering, and people walking past the stand.
Decide where it will live
Indoor placement avoids rain and ultraviolet exposure but still requires a stable base. A porch or deck installation needs weather protection and a positive anchor. If the stand will see wind, keep the basket small and sheltered; the tutorial supplies no wind or outdoor-load rating.

Build the hanging plant stand
1. Clean and stabilize the salvaged rack
Brush away dirt and debris, then wipe the rack clean. Lightly sand only splintered or rough areas that could cut you or snag a plant hanger. Williams kept the rack’s weathered patina instead of stripping it, so a complete refinish is optional. Before continuing, make sure the rack sits squarely and that its joints do not rock.
2. Remove two hooks and lay out the brackets
Choose two hooks on opposite sides of the rack. Remove them with the drill or the appropriate hand tool, keeping the hardware in case you want to reverse the project. Position one plant-hanger bracket higher than the other so baskets, vines, or a sign do not collide. The brackets do not have to match, but each must sit flat and have enough solid material behind its screws.

Check that the planned screw locations will not intersect an existing joint, crack, or the opposite side of a thin post. Hold a basket in place before drilling to verify that the hook opening faces the direction you need.
3. Add the optional round sign
For a personalized display, cut or reuse a 10–12-inch wooden round. Williams used a 10-inch cheese-box lid, applied a stencil, and fastened the sign to a bracket. Let paint dry fully before mounting it. Keep the panel light and avoid covering the bracket’s mounting holes or creating a broad surface that can catch strong wind.
4. Predrill and anchor the base
Set the rack on the wooden deck or other stable wooden surface where it will be used. Mark the base holes, move the rack aside, and predrill to reduce splitting. Return the rack and drive screws through the base into sound wood. Use fasteners appropriate to the rack and mounting surface; the tutorial does not specify a universal screw length or diameter.

Do not hang a planter while the rack is still freestanding if the design can be anchored. For a metal stand, Williams notes that brackets may be used, but the fastening method must suit the metal thickness and structure. A metal rack may need different bits, bolts, nuts, washers, or purpose-made clamps; select hardware only after examining the frame.
5. Protect exposed wood
Apply a clear exterior wood protectant to the rack and sign if they will be outdoors. Prepare the surface according to the product label, especially where old paint or finish remains. Williams used clear Olympic WaterGuard and reports that her chosen coating needs yearly retreatment. That interval is her product experience, not a guarantee for every climate, finish, or exposure. Inspect the coating each season and follow the current label rather than relying on a fixed schedule.
6. Hang a light basket and test gradually
Start with a small, lightweight basket and a modest plant. Water it, then check the rack again when the soil is at its heaviest; wet medium can add substantial weight compared with the dry display. Watch for bracket movement, screw pullout, base flex, tilting, or new cracks. If anything shifts, remove the load immediately and correct the anchoring before trying again.
Choose the right adaptation
| Decision | Wooden rack | Metal rack |
|---|---|---|
| Bracket attachment | Predrill and use screws that bite into sound wood. | Use hardware suited to the metal frame; the tutorial says brackets may be used but gives no universal fastener specification. |
| Surface preparation | Clean, smooth splinters, and protect exposed wood outdoors. | Inspect for rust, thin tubing, weld damage, and coatings that could prevent a clamp or bolt from seating. |
| Base anchoring | Screw the base to a deck or other stable wooden surface. | Use a fastening method designed for the stand and the receiving surface; do not assume wood screws are suitable. |
| Placement choice | What changes | Practical approach |
|---|---|---|
| Indoor | No rain or ultraviolet exposure | Protect the floor from watering and still anchor or ballast the stand if it could tip. |
| Covered porch | Some weather protection, but humidity and wind remain | Use exterior protectant, inspect seasonally, and keep the basket light until stability is proven. |
| Open deck | Full exposure and possible wind | Anchor the base before loading, use a sheltered location, and avoid oversized or water-heavy planters. |
How to keep the stand stable
Use the anchor as the primary safeguard
The tutorial’s deck-mounted example demonstrates why a freestanding coat rack should not be treated as automatically stable after brackets are added. The base connection resists tipping and twisting, while the brackets transfer a sideways moment into the upright. Inspect the screws and surrounding wood whenever you move the rack or change the planter.
Control water and changing weight
Choose a liner or basket that drains without leaving standing water on the deck. Account for the combined weight of the basket, plant, wet medium, and any saucer. A plant that is safe when freshly potted may become much heavier after watering or a storm. If you cannot verify the combined load, choose a smaller container rather than guessing.

Keep the two levels clear
Different bracket heights prevent baskets from touching, but allow room for growth. Position the lower hanger so leaves will not rub against the sign or upper basket. Leave a clear path around the stand to reduce accidental impacts that could loosen hardware.

Leaving the patina visible is the quickest route: clean the rack, smooth hazards, add brackets, and seal exposed wood. A single-color repaint can unify mismatched brackets, while a contrasting sign can make the display legible from a porch or walkway. Because paint and the sign carry no structural load, remove them first if troubleshooting reveals movement.
Bracket styles can differ intentionally. A simple arm on one side and a more decorative arm on the other create an asymmetrical display, provided both are securely mounted and sized for the same light-duty use. Keep decorative additions narrow and light; a large rigid panel can catch wind and increase the force on the rack.
Common problems and fixes
The rack rocks after anchoring
Remove the basket and sign, then check the floor or deck for an uneven spot and inspect the base for cracks or stripped screws. Relocate to sound material, repair the base, or use an appropriate shim or fastening method. Do not compensate for a loose joint by adding a heavier planter.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesA screw spins without tightening
The hole may be stripped, too large, or in decayed wood. Move to sound material only if the bracket geometry still works, or repair and reinforce the damaged area. A longer screw is not automatically safer if it exits the back or misses the structural member.

The bracket tilts under a light basket
Unload it and check that the bracket plate is flat, the screws are fully seated, and the mounting area is solid. Confirm that the basket is not heavier when wet than expected. Replace a bent or unsuitable bracket rather than trying to stabilize it with decoration.
The finish peels or the wood darkens
Exposure, trapped moisture, incompatible old coatings, or insufficient preparation may be responsible. Follow the protectant manufacturer’s current preparation and recoating instructions, and inspect the rack more often in wet or sunny locations. The tutorial does not establish compatibility among different sealers and existing finishes.
The stand tips in wind
Take the planter down immediately. Move the stand to a sheltered position, improve the base attachment for the actual surface, or reduce the basket size. Because no wind rating is published, do not treat a successful calm-day installation as proof of storm safety.
Time, maintenance, and realistic expectations
Williams estimates 30 minutes of preparation, 2 hours of project work, and 2 hours 30 minutes total. Those are the tutorial author’s estimates, not independent measurements. Your time will vary with cleaning, paint drying, bracket layout, repairs, and the difficulty of anchoring the base.
Inspect the stand at installation, after the first few waterings, and periodically thereafter. Look for loosened screws, splitting around holes, corrosion, rot, bracket deflection, and movement at the base. Remove the plant before any repair or before applying fresh protectant. A conservative, light-load setup that is checked regularly is the appropriate interpretation of this upcycle because its capacity has not been tested or published.
