You can turn a salvaged wooden window into a coffee table by building a stable base sized to the window. Choose a fixed leg-and-shelf design for a straightforward table, or build a shallow box and hinge the window on top to make a display case. Before sanding or using the table, inspect the frame, check for potentially hazardous old paint, and have the glass assessed if it will serve as the everyday tabletop.
Choose the table style before cutting lumber
Measure the actual window, including its outside dimensions and thickness. Salvaged windows are not reliably standard sizes, so use the piece you have to set the base dimensions. Inspect the frame for loose joints, rot, and damage; the base must support the window and the way you plan to use the finished table. The project guides offer construction examples, not a universal cut list or load rating.
Fixed table with legs and a lower shelf
This design holds the window top on a frame with legs. Add a lower shelf if you want a place for books or other items. Reclaimed boards can suit the rustic look; plywood is an alternative shelf material. Hallmark Channel describes using 2x4s for a box-style support or 4x4s for legs, while Dremel’s plan uses plywood, screws, and wood glue. Treat those as design examples, not required dimensions or a tested specification.

Hinged display-case table
For storage beneath the window, build a shallow box to its outside dimensions and attach the window top with hinges. Set the box depth according to what you want to display. When cutting the sides, account for the thickness of the boards so the assembled box fits the window. Install a plywood bottom, then select hinges and screws to suit the particular window and box; there is no one-size-fits-all hardware kit specified for this project.
Materials and tools to gather
- A salvaged wooden window sash or frame
- Reclaimed boards or project lumber for the frame or box
- Plywood for a box bottom or lower shelf
- Wood screws and wood glue
- Furniture hinges if you want the top to open
- Legs or support pieces, plus optional shelf boards
- A measuring tape, saw, drill, clamps, and sandpaper
- Wood filler and paint or stain, if desired
Choose lumber, fasteners, and supports to fit the measured window and intended design. The guides do not establish a project cost or a load capacity, so do not assume the finished table has been load-tested.

Build the base to fit your window
- Measure and inspect: Record the window’s outside dimensions and thickness. Check the frame and joints for rot or looseness before deciding how the base will attach.
- Plan the support: For a fixed table, lay out the leg-and-frame arrangement and optional shelf. For a display case, set the box’s width and length to the window and choose its depth based on the display items.
- Cut and assemble: Cut the boards to your own measurements, accounting for board thickness at box corners. Use glue and screws as appropriate for the joints, and add the plywood bottom or shelf if included.
- Fit the window top: Secure it to the fixed support, or attach it to the box with appropriately selected hinges. Check that the top sits as intended and, for a hinged version, opens without binding.
- Finish the wood: Fill holes and apply paint or stain if desired. Do not sand an old painted window until you have considered the lead-paint precautions below.
Check old paint before sanding or refinishing
Paint on an older window may contain lead. The EPA says homes built before 1978 may have lead-based paint, and older homes are more likely to contain it. Sanding or other work that disturbs painted surfaces can create hazardous dust. If lead may be present, determine whether it is before disturbing the finish and follow the EPA’s lead-safe setup, dust-control, protection, and cleanup guidance for DIYers.
EPA guidance describes measures such as containing the work area, minimizing dust, protecting the worker, and cleaning carefully. Its listed supplies include plastic sheeting, wet-dry sandpaper or a sanding sponge, a spray mister, a HEPA vacuum, heavy-duty bags, wipes, eye protection, and gloves. These supplies do not replace safe work practices. EPA recommends hiring a lead-safe certified contractor for renovation in a pre-1978 home with lead paint. The EPA page says the Renovation, Repair and Painting (RRP) Rule generally does not apply to homeowners working on their own home, but notes exceptions, including rental, childcare, and for-profit flipping contexts; check current official guidance and applicable rules for your circumstances.

When window glazing work can raise an RRP issue
If your build involves replacing a pane, removing painted glazing, or repairing a window balancer, the activity may disturb paint. The EPA’s window repair and maintenance FAQ says replacing a pane is not a window replacement, but the work may still be subject to the RRP Rule unless it meets the minor repair and maintenance definition, which references no more than six square feet of painted surface per room. That FAQ addresses a specific regulatory question; it is not blanket legal advice for every salvage or furniture project.

Vintage glass varies from pane to pane, and the available guidance does not establish that every old pane is unsafe. It cautions that some may not be suitable for everyday tabletop use. Avoid placing heavy objects on glass that is cracked or whose condition is unknown. If you plan to use the surface regularly, ask a glazier to assess the actual pane or consider a fitted tempered-glass overlay. A glazier can advise whether the pane and its support are appropriate for your intended use.

Choose details that suit the way you will use the table
For a fixed design, consider the finished height, stability, support beneath the glass, and whether a lower shelf is useful. For a hinged display case, consider storage depth, hinge placement, and how easily the top can be opened. In either version, let the specific window and intended use determine the build rather than relying on a generic cut list or assumed capacity.
