How to Turn Bifold Closet Doors Into Separate Bathroom Double Doors

A documented 2015 bathroom project removed the folding connection from bifold closet doors and rehung the panels as separate doors. Here is the exact hardware and sequence reported, plus the height, closure, privacy, and code limits you must evaluate yourself.

Yes, bifold closet doors can be rehung as two independently swinging doors, but the documented bathroom project behind this example is a single 2015 installation—not a universal instruction or a current code guide. The builder removed the folding connection, fitted each panel with non-mortise hinges, installed a new jamb, and adjusted the two leaves until they aligned.

What the bathroom conversion involved

The project was reported in a first-person article published by Addicted 2 Decorating on March 16, 2015. It began with bifold panels covering a hallway-bathroom opening. Instead of allowing the panels to fold toward one another, the author converted them into a pair of separate doors that swing from hinges.

That distinction matters. The account documents what worked in one opening with one set of doors. It does not establish that every bifold door, frame, wall, or bathroom layout can safely accept the same treatment. Door construction, opening dimensions, weight, hinge capacity, and local requirements still need to be checked for an individual installation.

The folding connection was removed

Bifold doors normally operate as connected panels. In this project, the hardware joining the panels was removed so each panel could function as its own door leaf. Once separated, each leaf needed its own hinge line and a frame capable of supporting it.

Each leaf received three non-mortise hinges

The author attached three non-mortise door hinges to the edge of each door. She chose this style specifically to avoid routing or mortising recesses into the door. Her description is a record of that choice and experience, not a comparison proving that non-mortise hinges are best for all conversions.

Materials and hardware named in the account

Element What the project account says What is not established
Existing doors Bifold closet-door panels were converted into two separate leaves. The door manufacturer, construction, thickness, weight, and exact model are not stated.
Hinges Three non-mortise hinges were attached to the edge of each door. Brand, model, dimensions, finish, load rating, and current availability are not stated.
Frame A three-piece interior door jamb kit was assembled; the head piece was cut to the needed width. The kit’s material, profile, dimensions, and compatibility with other openings are not stated.
Installation hardware The jamb was installed with Quick Door Hanger hardware. The specific kit configuration, fasteners, capacity, and present-day availability are not stated.
Closure hardware A stop and magnetic closures were still planned when the article was written. The article does not confirm that either was installed or that the doors ultimately latched.

Use the table as a boundary around the evidence. It identifies the components used in this one project without turning an individual product choice into a recommendation.

Reported installation sequence

The following sequence follows the work described by the author. It should be treated as a project record to study and adapt only after checking the doors and opening with the relevant manufacturer or a qualified installer.

  1. Separate the panels. Remove the hardware that joins the bifold panels. Keep track of the removed pieces until you are certain the new arrangement is stable; the account does not say whether any original parts were reused.
  2. Plan the hinge side of each leaf. With the panels acting as two doors, each one needs a vertical edge that will attach to the jamb. The author used three non-mortise hinges on each door edge so no hinge recesses had to be routed into the panels.
  3. Prepare the jamb kit. Assemble the two side pieces and the head piece of a three-piece interior door jamb kit. The head was cut to the width needed for this opening. The account does not provide the cut dimension, so measure the actual opening rather than copying a number from the article.
  4. Install the jamb. The author used Quick Door Hanger hardware while setting the jamb. Follow the instructions supplied with the hardware you obtain; the historical account does not identify its fastener pattern or provide a universal installation method.
  5. Hang both leaves. Attach the hinged edges to the jamb, then bring the two doors together in the opening. The source says the author made small jamb adjustments until the doors aligned.
  6. Check movement and meeting edges. Open and close each leaf independently and then together. Look for rubbing, uneven reveals, or a meeting line that shifts as the doors move. The account confirms alignment adjustments were needed, but it does not list the exact adjustment procedure.

Why non-mortise hinges were selected

A mortised hinge sits in a recess cut into the door and jamb. The author wanted to avoid that routing and mortising work, so she bought non-mortise hinges described as installing directly on the door edge. That can make a conversion less dependent on specialized cutting, but the article does not establish the strength, longevity, or suitability of this hinge type for another door.

Before buying hardware, confirm the hinge manufacturer’s requirements for door thickness, weight, screw placement, frame material, and the number of hinges. None of those specifications appears in the project account. The fact that three hinges were used on each leaf should therefore be read as the quantity used there, not as a rule for every bifold conversion.

Accounting for the height difference

The converted bifold doors were reported as 79 inches tall. The other pre-hung hallway doors were 80 inches tall. The author chose to hang the converted doors at the same height as those neighboring doors, which left a larger gap beneath the shorter leaves.

She said she planned to add a filler strip to address that gap. The article does not confirm the filler strip’s dimensions, material, attachment, appearance, or whether the work was completed. Do not present a particular strip detail as the finished solution.

Measure before cutting or hanging

  • Record the actual height and width of both panels, not just the nominal size of the closet opening.
  • Measure the opening at multiple points so you know whether the jamb must accommodate variations.
  • Compare the proposed door height with nearby doors if a consistent sightline is important.
  • Decide how a bottom gap will be handled before finalizing hinge and jamb positions.
  • Allow for the jamb, hinge plates, and any stop or closure hardware when checking clearances.

Those checks are planning steps, not dimensions supplied by the 2015 account. The only project measurements reported there are 79 inches for the bifold doors and 80 inches for the comparison hallway doors.

Closure, privacy, and locking were unfinished topics

At the point covered by the article, the doors did not stay closed as the author wanted. She still intended to add a door stop and magnetic closures. Because the source stops before confirming those additions, it cannot be used as proof that the finished doors latched, resisted movement, or provided bathroom privacy.

The author also acknowledged questions about privacy and locking but deferred those details to a later update. No later solution is documented in the material available for this article. Treat the conversion and the privacy function as separate decisions: a pair of hinged leaves is not automatically a latchable or lockable bathroom door.

Questions to settle before using the opening

  • How will the two leaves remain closed when people walk past or when air moves through the room?
  • Will the chosen stop and closure hardware hold both leaves in the intended position without damaging the panels?
  • Is a privacy latch or lock required for the room, and is the selected hardware compatible with the thinness and construction of the doors?
  • Can the doors be opened quickly from the occupied side if that is necessary in your household?

The historical account answers none of these questions. Obtain current hardware instructions and applicable local guidance before treating the opening as a completed bathroom entrance.

What this project does—and does not—prove

It demonstrates one practical concept: remove the folding connection, hinge the panels individually, fit a jamb, and adjust the frame until the leaves align. It does not provide an engineering test, a building-code interpretation, or a product comparison.

There is no evidence in the account about accessibility clearances, emergency egress, structural capacity, fire performance, moisture exposure, or compliance with a particular jurisdiction’s rules. Bathroom requirements can vary by location and by the type of dwelling. Check current local requirements and the instructions for the hardware and doors you actually plan to use.

The account also leaves several product facts unknown: exact hinge and hanger models, a complete bill of materials, installation fasteners, current availability, and the final closure arrangement. Those omissions are important when estimating cost or assuming that an identical kit can be purchased today.

Pre-installation checklist for a similar conversion

  • Door condition: Inspect both panels for damage, loose skins, hollow areas, or weak edges that may not hold hinge screws.
  • Dimensions: Measure each panel and the opening independently; do not assume the two leaves are identical.
  • Weight and hardware: Obtain the hinge manufacturer’s capacity and mounting requirements before selecting a hinge count.
  • Jamb fit: Verify that a three-piece interior jamb kit can be sized for the opening and that its profile will accept the chosen hinges.
  • Alignment plan: Decide how you will support and adjust the jamb while hanging both doors.
  • Bottom treatment: Resolve the height mismatch and any filler-strip design before final fastening.
  • Closure: Choose and test a stop, catch, latch, or other closure that is actually rated for the doors and intended use.
  • Privacy: Confirm whether the room needs a lock or privacy function and how it will be released in an emergency.
  • Local requirements: Check current rules and seek qualified advice where the opening’s use, location, or construction creates a code or safety question.

Troubleshooting symptoms reported or implied by the project

The two doors do not line up

The author solved alignment by making small jamb adjustments. For a comparable installation, stop before forcing the leaves together and recheck whether the jamb is seated consistently and whether both hinge edges are supported as intended. The source does not specify which adjustment produced the final alignment, so use the jamb and hinge manufacturer’s procedure rather than copying an assumed fix.

The doors drift open

This was an unresolved condition in the article: the doors did not stay closed as desired, and a stop and magnetic closures were still planned. Treat drifting as a closure-design problem, not evidence that the panels must be rehung with a different hinge. Select compatible closure hardware and verify its operation after the jamb is stable.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A large gap remains below the doors

The documented panels were one inch shorter than the nearby hallway doors. The author planned a filler strip, but the final treatment is not recorded. Measure the finished opening and choose a filler approach that suits the door construction and appearance; do not assume the article’s planned detail was completed.

When this approach may be a reasonable candidate

A conversion based on this account may be worth investigating when you already have bifold panels, want two independently swinging leaves, and can install a suitable jamb and hinge system without compromising the door edges. It is less straightforward when the panels are unusually heavy, fragile, poorly supported at the edges, or a precise privacy-locking function is essential and cannot be verified with the available hardware.

The key decision is not simply whether the panels can be separated. You must also establish that the doors can be supported, aligned, closed, and secured in the actual opening. The 2015 project offers a documented starting concept, while the unresolved closure and privacy details show why the final design requires its own checks.
