Make a tiny Halloween ghost by drying an air-dry-clay shape over a foam craft ball or ping-pong ball, then placing it on a battery-operated flameless LED tea light. The light shines through the eyeholes, making a simple tabletop apparition without an open flame. The project is a small clay lantern: a thin, rounded ghost topper sits over a flameless LED tea light. Country Living described the idea on October 2, 2018, crediting Meaghan Mountford of The Decorated Cookie. The finished figures are intended to look like tiny apparitions that seem to float and glow.

The clay is not sculpted into a detailed figurine. Instead, a circular piece is cut, given two eyeholes, and draped over a round support while it dries. After the clay hardens, remove or leave the support as appropriate and set the ghost over the LED light. Because the light source is battery-operated and flameless, the project is suited to a tabletop, shelf, mantel or covered party display where a real candle would be inconvenient.
Materials and what each one does
- Air-dry clay: This becomes the hardened ghost shell. Leftover modeling clay can work if it is still usable and can be rolled flat.
- A cookie cutter or knife: Use one of these to cut circular clay pieces. A cutter gives repeatable shapes; a knife lets you work with whatever outline is practical.

Before you start: choose the light and work surface
Use a flameless LED light
Check the package for a battery-operated, flameless LED description. Do not substitute a lit wick or any other open flame beneath the clay. The topper is a craft shell, not a heat-rated candle holder, and the documented method is specifically built around a flameless tea light.
Prepare a clean place for drying
Set the clay on a surface where it can remain undisturbed until it is fully hardened. Keep the round supports stable so the clay does not slide or flatten. The published instructions do not establish a specific drying time, clay thickness, number of ghosts or finished dimensions; those variables depend on the material and how thinly you roll it.
How to make the clay ghosts
- Roll the clay flat. Work the air-dry clay until you can roll it into an even sheet. An even sheet helps the ghost dry with a consistent silhouette, but do not force a thickness that your clay manufacturer does not recommend.
- Cut circles. Press a cookie cutter into the sheet, or use a knife to cut circular pieces. Each circle becomes one ghost topper. Gather scraps and reroll them if the clay remains workable.
- Make two eyeholes. Poke two openings in every circle before shaping it. Keep the holes large enough for the light to show through, while leaving enough clay around them that the face does not tear when draped.
- Drape the circle over a support. Center the piece over a foam craft ball or ping-pong ball. Let the clay fall around the rounded form so it develops a head and loose, hanging sides. Smooth only where needed; an irregular edge can make each ghost look different.
- Leave it to harden. Keep each draped piece on its support until the air-dry clay has hardened. The source instructions do not give a universal drying duration, so judge readiness by the clay itself rather than by an assumed number of hours.
- Set the topper over the light. Once the clay is hard, place the ghost over a battery-operated flameless LED tea light. Turn on the light and check that both eyeholes are visible from the viewing angle. If the support remains inside, make sure it does not prevent the topper from sitting securely; the documented method calls for placing the hardened figure over the tea light.
Getting a better ghost shape
Center the face before draping
The two eyeholes are cut while the clay is flat, so position them near the center of the circle before you place it on the ball. If they start too close to an edge, the face can end up looking sideways once the clay hangs over the support.

Let the sides stay loose
The rounded ball supplies the head shape; the clay that extends beyond it forms the body. Avoid pressing every fold flat. Slightly uneven edges and different drapes make a group look handmade rather than stamped from one mold.
Keep the topper light enough for the LED
The goal is a small clay shell that sits over a small light. Excess material can make the figure bulky and may obscure the glow. The original instructions identify air-dry clay and a rounded support but do not specify a measured quantity, so make one test circle and adjust your rolling technique before cutting the rest.
Lighting, placement and everyday handling
Switch on the LED tea light before placing the clay ghost, then arrange the topper so the eyeholes face the room. Group several lights at different distances for a small cluster, or place one beside a bowl of Halloween treats. Keep the display where it will not be knocked over, and remove the clay toppers before changing batteries or moving the lights.

Flameless does not mean indestructible. Protect the clay from water and rough handling, and store the hardened pieces so their thin edges do not get crushed. The project is best treated as an indoor craft unless the clay and light packaging specifically indicate otherwise.
How this differs from a solar-light cheesecloth ghost
A separate tutorial published by Dollar Store Crafts on October 21, 2014, uses a solar garden light, cheesecloth, stickers for eyes and ribbon. That is a different construction: fabric is draped over a larger light rather than clay being shaped over a ball. It can suit an outdoor display, while the clay tea-light version is a compact tabletop craft.

The solar tutorial says its lamps glow longer outdoors, but that is the author’s observation, not a measured comparison with LED tea lights. Choose it only if you want the larger cheesecloth look and have a suitable solar lamp; it is not a substitute for the clay method described above.

Shopping without assuming a current dollar-store price
The title’s dollar-store wording describes the intended source for inexpensive tea lights, not a guaranteed present-day price. Seasonal listings can show a two-count pack, assorted colors or a product that is temporarily out of stock. Availability varies by location, and the same store may change its assortment during the Halloween season.
For the rest of the project, check what you already own before buying anything: leftover air-dry clay, a cookie cutter, and ping-pong or foam craft balls can all serve the roles described in the method. If you need to purchase them, buy by function rather than by a particular brand, since the instructions do not require a named manufacturer.
Troubleshooting the most common problems
The clay cracks while you drape it
Cracking usually means the circle is being stretched or handled more than it can tolerate. Roll a fresh, even piece, make the eyeholes before lifting it, and lower it gently over the rounded support. Reuse scraps only while they remain pliable.

The face is hidden or off-center
Mark the center of the circle mentally before cutting the eyeholes, then place that face area over the top of the ball. If the clay shifts, lift and reposition it before it begins to harden.
The ghost will not sit securely over the light
Check that the hardened clay is not catching on the support or on an uneven edge. Place the topper on a flat surface and test it without moving the light. If a figure rocks, reserve it for a protected spot and use a more stable topper for high-traffic areas.
The glow is too faint
Confirm that the LED is switched on and that the eyeholes are not covered by clay. A thick or opaque section can reduce the visible light, so the next circle should be rolled more evenly. Do not add a real flame to increase brightness.
A simple plan for making a group
- Lay out all the clay circles before shaping them so you can compare their sizes.
- Cut two eyeholes in each circle while the pieces are still flat.
- Drape each one over a separate foam craft ball or ping-pong ball.
- Let every piece harden fully, then pair each topper with one flameless LED tea light.
- Arrange the finished ghosts at different positions so their faces remain visible from the main viewing angle.
This approach keeps the process repeatable while allowing natural variations in the hanging edges. Since no fixed quantity or dimension is specified for the original craft, make as many as your available clay, supports and lights allow.
What to expect from the finished decoration
These ghosts are intentionally small, simple and softly lit. Their character comes from the rounded clay silhouette and the two glowing eyeholes, not from painted details or complicated sculpting.
