Clean, discarded plastic containers can become the bodies, shells, or details of sea-creature sculptures. For a small tide-pool creature, use a sauce container as its body and add painted paper-tube tentacles or legs; for a more immersive project, turn a cardboard box into a hanging ocean diorama. These indoor crafts draw on museum activities, while large marine-debris installations involve a very different, community-scale process.
Choose a format for your sea sculpture

Make a small tide-pool creature
A plastic sauce container can suggest a creature’s body or shell. The Peabody Essex Museum notes that a swirl in the container can read as a snail shell, but the same basic approach can inspire other sea-life designs.

Materials
- A clean plastic sauce container or bottle cap
- Paper tubes for arms, legs, or tentacles
- Paint and a permanent marker
- A hot glue gun for assembly, used with adult help
Steps
- Paint the inside of the container and let it dry.
- Cut paper-tube shapes for limbs, tentacles, or other details, then paint them.
- Draw the creature’s features with a permanent marker.
- With an adult’s help, use a hot glue gun to attach the details to the container.

Build a hanging sea-plastics diorama
A diorama uses the inside of a box as an ocean setting, with reused packaging turned into animals that hang in the scene. The Sydney Harbour Federation Trust activity is framed for ages four and up and gives a duration of 120 minutes; those are the activity page’s estimates, not a guarantee that every child will be ready or every project will take the same time.
Materials
- A cardboard box
- Clean reused packaging such as bottles, lids, straws, and bags
- String and sticky tape
- Paint and brushes
- An egg carton or other reused material for extra shapes or plant life
- A Stanley knife for an adult to use when preparing the box
Steps
- Have an adult remove one side of the box to create an open display.
- Paint the interior blue and the floor a sandy color; let the paint dry.
- While it dries, make marine animals from the clean reused packaging.
- Attach string to the animals and suspend them inside the box with sticky tape.
- Add rocks, shells, or reused materials as a seabed or plant life.

Use discarded materials thoughtfully
The Smithsonian National Museum of Natural History offers a broader sculpture prompt: build from plastic or other throw-away items that cannot be reused or recycled and would otherwise go in the garbage. Tape, glue, string, or other joining materials can help hold a design together. Its Build a Sculpture activity is a flexible prompt rather than a container-specific plan.

Making art from discarded packaging can draw attention to marine debris, but these activities do not establish that one craft prevents ocean pollution or that every plastic item is suitable for reuse. The cited activities call for adult involvement with cutting and hot glue; they do not set out comprehensive safety guidance for every plastic type or adhesive.

How household crafts differ from marine-debris installations
Large public artworks made with marine debris are not simply bigger versions of a household craft. Smithsonian Ocean describes Washed Ashore, a community-built project led by artist Angela Haseltine Pozzi: volunteers collect, clean, sort, and assemble debris into animal sculptures. Examples include a whale ribcage made from white bleach containers and a jellyfish made from clear water bottles. The process and scale set this work apart from making a single indoor creature.
Another distinct example is Au Karem Ira Lamar Lu – Ghost Nets of the Ocean, an installation by Torres Strait Islander and non-Indigenous collaborating artists from Erub Arts on Erub, Torres Strait, Australia. The Australian National Maritime Museum describes woven sculptures made from abandoned fishing nets and recycled plastics, including an outrigger canoe, fish, turtles, squid, and jellyfish. Erub artist Florence Gutchen is quoted by the museum: “The ocean holds all mankind together, we are all connected by it and we must look after it.” See the museum exhibition page.
